Which Batman comic to follow?

Also, whatever happened to "The Dark Knight" by David Finch? I thought that was an ongoing? Is he just taking forever to draw the issues or something?
Finch is a slow artist, and DC was overly optimistic on the schedule.

And I don't like how he instantly looks 30 years old in that new costume, which looks horrible anyway.
I personally don't think he looks 30 years old in that costume. I thought that some of the artists have really done a good job depicting the different body-lines.
Francis Manapul did a really good job making Tim look young in the Red Robin costume in an issue of Adventure Comics.

I don't mind the Red Robin costume at all.

I haven't read a Batman series in quite some time. I don't even know what I have and can't look since they are packed away at my parent's house. However my favorite has always been the one off Gotham by Gaslight. I don't even know if you can still get it anymore, but I thought the Victorian and Jack the Ripper what ifs were really great.

There is a wiki at least

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotham_by_Gaslight

:)

My library has an old copy of Gotham By Gaslight. Haven't seen it in a book store or comic store in ages though.

The Bat-books are not currently all that complicated. Just hit the comic book store, grab some issues, and see what you like.

Dick's Batman in Gotham City in DETECTIVE, BATMAN, and BATMAN AND ROBIN.

Bruce is Batman in BATMAN, INC and BATMAN: DARK KNIGHT.

Oh yeah I forgot I'm reading Birds of Prey too. I haven't been enjoying that either.

So basically at the moment, the book I have any interest in that I'm actively reading is Batman and Robin, solely for the reteaming of my favorite GLC team Patrick Gleason and Peter Tomasi. But unfortunately Gleason's art does NOT look as good as the Aquaman and early GLC days. I think he's just rushing through the work lately. His Brightest Day stuff didn't look so great either. Have you seen his art on Aquaman and the first 20 issues of GLC? Absolutely breathtaking.

DC has admitted as much, when then announced the Paul Cornell/Scott McDaniel fill-in arc in issues 17-19 -- Tomasi and Gleason were swamped, and Batman and Robin didn't fit their schedule at that moment. (I also think that the upcoming Judd Winnick arc is to get Tomasi and Gleason more breathing room, and in this case DC wisely scheduled it in advance.)

That said, I think that Gleason has been trying to do a Frank Quitely thing with his art with his two issues of B&R thus far, and that's why it looks different. That's just my feeling.

I've noticed a progressive degradation of his art the past few years. It started with Blackest Night. It looked good but not quite as good as what came before. Then he went to Brightest Day which barely had his level of detail and style to it. And now B&R, which looks the same. It's like only a few occasional panels actually have his distinctive look.

I actually just read his Aquaman issues. They look AMAZING. He actually made me care about Aquaman

For the OP, another forum has an excellent guide to where to get started with modern Batman no matter what kind of stories you like, as well as explaining how to catch up over the last few years if you want to. I'm not sure if I can post the link though here?

The Death of Oracle arc was disappointing and the conclusion underwhelming, after it started off pretty well. Gleason's arc does seem erratic and unfocused. I like his Damian, he seems close to Quietly's Damian. I would highly suggest reading Scott Snyder's "Detective Comics" he has just reintroduced Jim Gordon's son who's a recovering sociopath now.

Curious about this son, who should be in his early teens if he's the kid we see in Year One, but is clearly an adult. Maybe Gordon had an older son? He did have a son named Tony at one time, but he hasn't been mentioned since before COIE.

I dunno. He looks like he's in his mid to late twenties. I thought he looked a bit young myself when I saw him but meh it doesn't matter that much.

I think I'll follow Batman and Robin. I like the way it's drawn and so far it seems a bit more light hearted/ Has a tone I like.

It's James Gordon Jr. His son with Barbara from Year One.
Yeah, but as I said, isnt he a bit old to be that kid, who was born during Year One?
The Bat-ages are one of those things you really don't want to think about, because they open lots of Pandora's Boxes.

However, if we take Dick to be twenty-eight now (which is not unreasonable), and he was the commonly accepted eight when his parents died, then James Gordon, Jr. would probably be about twenty-three now.

A long time ago (I think it was the 80's) I had an Batman comic where he was dealing with Ras al ghu or whatever his name is and this guy had a hot daughter and her and Bruce got it on. The daughter died or Bruce and her broke it off, I forgot, but at the end of the book I remember their being a baby that was wearing a necklace that Bruce gave the chick thus implying this was his and the chicks baby. Has there been any comic bringing this story line up to date and revealing if this was his kid or not?

Read "Batman and Son"

Damian was trained by the League of Shadows but is now the new robin with Dick as the new batman.

Yes "Batman and Son" is considered an in-continuity sequel to "Son of the Bat" although Morrison in an interview stated he admittedly didn't know that Bruce had relations with Talia by his own free will. In "Batman and Son" Bruce is drugged by Talia and she sleeps with him, so Morrison made a mistake.
