Are there any Early Grey fans on the board? Several years ago I tried it based on the fact that it was Picard's favorite tea. It really is quite good.

This morning I watched the episode "Ethics" while reading my Trek encyclopedia and drinking hot Earl Grey tea. Does that make me a nerd?

If it was just that, no. Just a geek (that's better than being a nerd)

When I was a kid, I tried Earl Grey tea on JLP's recommendation. I felt adult and sophisticated, then remembered I was drinking hot water with a few leaves in it, and promptly decided to dispense with such silliness. :p

I love Earl Grey. I like English breakfast and Irish breakfast, too, but Earl Grey's my favorite. I can't remember if I tried it because of Picard or not (possibly so but I always have liked tea so I might have tried it on my own), but the first few times I tried it, it was OK. Nothing to write home about but OK. Then I discovered that the secret of really good tea, whether it's Earl Grey or English breakfast or whatever, is to buy really good tea. So I now drink loose-leaf Earl Grey a LOT - brewed in a pot with boiling water, just like in the old country. Love it, love it, love it - not because of Picard but because it's just so delicious and refreshing. I'm drinking some right now, actually.

BTW, whenever I go to the tea store - yes, that's right; I go to an actual tea store, and the reason is that I am a tea geek - they always try to sell me something called Lady Earl Grey, which is Earl Grey with vanilla and dried orange peel and who knows what else in it. No thanks.

Yes, I am a big fan of Earl Grey tea, I've even been to known to say "Tea. Earl Grey. Hot" at the kettle, to my endless, alas unshared amusement.

No, no, no!!!!!! Not boiling water, just off the boil otherwise you burn the leaves, makes it brew too quickly and brings out bitterness. Ideal temp about 90degreesC.

LAdy Grey tastes like mouth wash, and makes me think of a trip to the dentist.

Once I can find some, I promise I'll try it. :p

You can find some at any grocery store. But usually those brands are pretty standard and not great by any means, but still good.

Twinings tends to be your best bet for grocery store Earl Grey. I usually have a box on hand, though I lack it at the moment.

I'm also a big fan of Lady Grey, FWIW. Still has that nice bergamot flavour, but adds in a nice lemony citrus note.

I'm a green tea man myself. Never tired Earl Grey. Been meaning to...usually whenever I watch them drinking it on Next Gen.

I drink Earl Grey because Picard drinks Early Grey.

This is the only place in the world I can admit that, and I am grateful.

To go totally tea-geeky on you, what I actually do is bring the water to a boil (my electric kettle doesn't have a thermostat), turn it off and let it sit for a minute or so before adding it to the tea. Or sometimes I turn it off just before it comes to a boil. It actually still tastes fine with boiling water, too - just not as good as when it's just off the boil.

As I mentioned, I've never tried Lady Grey, but I've smelled it (they're always wanting you to sniff tea in those shops), and it smells like something one would put in a sachet in one's underwear drawer to scent one's lingerie. But drink it? I don't think so.

Aw. Well, you enjoy yourself anyway. I say it all the time, too.

This thread makes me want to find a tea store in my area so I can get some of that fancy Earl Grey. I only buy Twinings.

P.G. Tips is a favorite of mine. Earl Grey is excellent though. And from time to time I like Lady Grey as well. More citrus to it.

My brand of preference? Twinings.

I own a tea and coffee house, and with over 40 varieties of tea, Earl Grey is by far the best seller. I wonder if Picard has any influence on that

It's possible. Fans of Star Trek are easily influenced in regards to things Trek. It could also be the best seller because it's amazing.
