Nemesis

I'm watching Nemesis right now, to finally conclude my Trek movie marathon and I honestly think it's now my least favorite movie. Before, it was The Motion Picture but Nemesis is truly a piece of garbage.

Does anyone on this board really love this movie? No judgments if you do, I'm just curious to see if there is something I'm missing.

It has a few fans, honestly, but Nemesis is pretty much the most reviled of all the Trek films. There's a lot more consensus on that than even Final Frontier or Motion Picture.

I saw it in the theater with my best friend on opening weekend. The theater we were in was about two/thirds full and pretty vocal which is always good for atmosphere and pretty scarce in my opinion. When it ended and the two of us were walking out, I asked him what he thought of the film...boom...we both had two opposite views of the film lol. He loved it and I hated it and immediately started to point out all of the films flaws. He's not really a critical person when it comes to analyzing a film so he wasn't really bothered by what I said. For all he was concerned with was that it had an interesting story TO HIM and had some good action sequences. We ended up debating about it for a good half hour after wards though.

It is a truly awful film that falls flat on a lot of levels. There are enough die hards on this board who love anything Trek regardless of how awful it is, though, so I assume someone will defend it in here.

I won't defend it, but I'll defend my enjoyment of it. I know it's horribly flawed, yet I still like it.

It had so much wrong with it, although I still didn't mind it. I didn't hate it. It does rank very low on my list, but I'd rather watch it over TMP or TFF any day.

You can judge whatever you want. I used to rank it 5th but now its 4th. Why do I like it? Its the biggest scale ST movie since STTMP. It has good production design(the best of the ST movies except maybe STTMP), set-piece FX and action sequences like a modern SF adventure movie. Firmly establishing it as the first modern ST movie.

While you can quibble with some plot choices, it has the fewest inconsistencies of any of the ST movies save perhaps STII. It has a central plot dealing with Picard, and involves him both on a personal level as well as professional, not all the STNG TV stories did that. A vulnerable Picard from the movies (STFC) makes for good viewing. Data, my second favorite STNG character also has a good bit to do in the movie and he has quite a spectacular farewell at the end. I also enjoy the presence of the Romulans and their new ships, though they I wish they hadn't been under the heel of Shinzon. Tom Hardy is underrated in this role, which is quite dark.

Its also a myth the viewers didn't like the movie. The movie rates well on the major rating sites, and had a high cinemascore by viewers. It made close to $120 million from ALL sources (not just BO, and not counting marketing) and its DVDs sold well over 2 million copies, the highest for a first run ST movie until the monumental ST09. I've had great success introducing the movie to the uninitiated. Everyone has liked it, certainly more than Insurrection and several of the original crew movies.

By no means is it perfect. I wish they hadn't used B4, and there are a few slow moments towards the middle of the movie. I think it just came at a time when there were a lot of negative feelings toward ST in general and that kept the box office down for fans on the fence. Its so much better than STV, its almost like comparing ST09 to Plan 9 From Outer Space.

That would be STV...it was bad in every phase of production except music, and the same can't be said for Nemesis.

:guffaw: When you typed "least inconsistencies" in regards to Nemesis, did you do it without busting out laughing? :guffaw:

But it is still more consistent than Nemesis. And at least there was a plot in 5... Bad though it may have been

According to the [thread=137098]Rank the first ten films[/thread] thread, the communal ranking is:

1. The Wrath of Khan
2. The Undiscovered Country
3. First Contact
4. The Voyage Home
5. The Motion Picture
6. The Search for Spock
7. Generations
8. Nemesis
9. Insurrection
10. The Final Frontier

Through 30 “ballots” cast (including my own), Nemesis defeats Insurrection 15-14-1. That is, Nemesis is ranked higher than Insurrection by 15 voters, Insurrection is ranked higher by 14 voters, and one voter declared them a tie. Nemesis defeats TFF by the same 15-14-1 score.

In fact, every other film defeats TFF head-to-head. That makes TFF the Condorcet Loser, and the communal choice for worst film.

Personally, I ranked TFF at 6 (last of the TOS films, but higher than all the TNG films), NEM at 8, GEN at 9, and INS at 10.

My first posting, and Im defending The Final Frontier! lol. Star Trek 5 was infinately better than all four next gen films. Sure it has its flaws, cringe-worthy moments and such. However it stayed true to the spirit of The Original Series. Heck, the special effects seemed just a step up from the classic series! It continued from plotlines from the previous 4: Spock dying then returning, David, and Kirk still being wanted by the Klingon Empire. Continuity wasnt changed, and it was an original idea. Say what you will about The Final Frontier, but it didn't kill the franchise like Nemesis did.

Also, I dont believe in the whole 'franchise fatigue' thing. That was a corporate defense imho. If Nemesis had knocked it out of the park, if they had taken their time
with Enterprise, we would still be in the prime universe today. Look at CSI, and L&O. How many of each show are on the air right now, and is still in the top 5 slots? Everything plagued(Nemesis) it from the release date, to having an in-experienced director tackle a project as big as this. If I were Berman and in that situation, I would've pulled heavily for someone like Spielberg to direct Nemesis. Imagine a Spielberg directed Star Trek movie! I think I read somehwere he's a fan as well. Oh well. Im just curious to see what Abrams and Co. have in store for us.

I can name some films that are worse than Nemesis.....

Catwoman
Skyline
Batman and Robin

/\lol!Just barely. I havent seen Skyline yet, so I cant pass judgement. I'll probably red box it.

The only use Nemesis has is to wrap up the TNG saga, and unfortunately it goes out with a whimper.

Still, it is a guilty pleasure for me, and I like the very beginning and very end. Basically, after having seen it a couple times, if I were to rewatch Nemesis now, I would watch from the beginning on to the point Picard calls Riker "Mr. Troi," then skip to the part Data arrives on the Scimitar and watch the rest on to the end.

I don't have a lot of use for the rest of the movie.
