Hmm...by my count, season 5 has 11 5-star episodes!! Compared to 5 for season 1 and 3 for season 2. I think you'd be missing out...

I've been enjoying reading your reviews and hope they keep coming. Just an FYI if you didn't already know, CBS and Netflix announced a partnership yesterday that will bring "episodes" from all incarnations of Trek to Netflix Instant. I don't know exactly what they mean by "episodes," nor do I know when they'll show up, but its far better quality than YouTube.
Just a quick reminder not to let the great discussion and thread veer into encouraging illegal file sharing or breaching of copyright. Sorry to be stuck-in-the-mud about this, but BBS policy is strict on stopping active encouragement of copyright infringement.
Legal downloads or rental systems are of course perfectly fine.
Time Squared" *
The Enterprise encounters a shuttlecraft with a duplicate Picard aboard from six hours in the future.
After the disappointment of "The Royale" things don't get any better with this episode. The cast is competent enough as they've already proven this season, but this whole thing struck me as being thrown together in a hurry, which is quite possible since this was the year the season was abbreviated because of a writer's strike. Science in Trek can be shaky, but here it strikes me as particularly bad.
The other thing that didn't impress is our first look at one of the shuttlepods, a design I've always thought one of the stupidest, dorkiest things I've ever seen. Earlier in the season we saw a rather poor fullsize shuttlecraft mockup of what was supposed to be Andrew Probert's awesome design, but evidently they badly messed it up. Say what you will but at least TOS' fullsize shuttlecraft mockup looked pretty much exactly like the "flying" film miniature.
"The Icarus Factor" *
Riker is offered his own command while Worf is feeling more than usually irritated.
This was all nothing but bad soap opera, and it's all capped off by Riker and his dad fighting it out in truly ridiculous looking costumes. And how nice that daddy just happens to know Kate Pulaski.
After a quite respectable start to the season with only a few bumps the show looks like it's in something of a drunken stupor. Anyone could be forgiven for thinking the early seasons were a write-off if all they had to go by were these recent episodes.
The second half of the season doesn't get off to a promising start.

Season Two was very uneven probably due mostly in part two the writer's strike. And yeah that stupid sub-compact Plymouth Horizon shuttlepod was a joke.

Data risks violating the Prime Directive when he answers a young girl's plea for help.
I was inclined to rate this a bit lower, but I liked how they addressed the issue of the Prime Directive. There was some decent discussion about the issue here. That said I think Data did indeed violate the directive and thereby ensnared Picard into a position where he couldn't bring himself to refuse further action.
This was a very welcome rebound from the previous run of disappointing episodes. One thing that has been refreshing about this season compared with the first season has been the refrain from reminding us that these folks are in "The Fuuuuuture!"
That and that air of Federation and human smugness seems near totally absent.

I'm surprised you rated this ep so low. I quite like it. I do agree that it feels a little rough around the edges, but the concept is intriguing and I rewatch this ep fairly frequently and almost never feel bored by it.
No argument here; it's terrible.
The Royale is just good ripe cheese. I think it's a love/hate sort of episode; I love it and always get a good chuckle or two from it.
One of my five-star eps; great teaser, great execution. The Riker/Romulan scenes with Picard on the planet are surprisingly fun.
I liked this one a lot on first-run and the first couple of times I re-watched it; the Prime Directive theme is nicely explored. But I just can't re-watch it any more. The first half drags quite a bit.
In contrast to Pen Pals, I detested this ep the first few times I saw it, but find it better now. Even the teen romantic angle seems vaguely sweet and innocent now rather than the cringeworthy angst I perceived it as at the time.

I've always liked how the PD was treated in this episode, the stuff with Data and the little girl is a but hammy but the PD stuff is top notch and more like I think it should be, the "Prime Suggestion." When a PD/PS situation comes up the Senior Staff should get together, discuss things, and reach a conclusion.
Well, put it this way, Contagion is, I think, my only TNG DVD that's now been rewatched enough to have developed a worn through segment that skips.

Q throws the Enterprise into a distant region where they encounter an unimaginable new threat.
Superb!
An unquestionable 5-star episode. Any remaining Federation smugness is thoroughly deflated by encountering the Borg. This alongside "The Measure Of A Man" ranks among the very best I think TNG has ever done. This is pretty much note perfect and I'm challenged to imagine anything they could have done much different. It's certainly my favourite Borg episode as well as the best Q episode. Also this is real final-frontier, where-no-man-has-gone-before materiel.
And the best praise I can give episodes like these is that I think they can stand easily with the best of TOS.
