Outcasts (BBC) series 1 discussion thread

Yeah, like I say I understand why its a success. Ratings seem to be funny things though, I think it was series 8 of Spooks that had really crappy numbers, but series 9 picked up no end.

I do wonder what numbers the BBC were looking for with Outcasts. I think the first episode got just over 4 million and I got the impression even than that they were dissapointed in it.

I still wonder if the decision to air it Tuesday as well as Monday was always planned, whether it was to try and compete with gypsy wedding tosh, or whether it was basically throwing it to the wolves to speed its death along?

I think it maybe was throwing it to the wolves. It was commissioned by another channel controller, it's taken nearly 4 years to get on screen and it's just strange scheduling, across the full week, yeah, monday/tuesday if it's self contained 2 part stories, yeah, but for a show like this it makes no sense.

Once this goes the only British scripted shows I will be watching are Bedlam and secret diary of a call girl.
And I'm only watch secret diary of a call girl because it's the last series.

Yeah and shifting it to Sunday night...it's almost like they were just waiting for the viewing figures to drop so they could do it.

I've not watched Secret Diary since a few episodes in to the first series. Bedlam seems OK so far. Being Human I really enjoy. Marchlands has seemed alright so far too. I've set Silk and South Riding to check out. Skins and Shameless I'm recording but not watching properly. So yeah bit thin on the ground right now.

I need to clear out my media centre I've got hundreds of shows recorded and I'm not keeping up with anything.

I'm quite enjoying Marchlands, a touch creepy at times, and how often do you get Wedge, River Song and Ray from LoM and A2A in the same show!

Well, after something of a shaky start (What anyone can wander into Forthaven? And Cas and Fleur really were pretty dense to begin with here) this actually turned out to be another good episode, and whilst I can see why people find it slow moving, certainly the accusations that it was just a soap opera and not sci-fi must be pretty dead in the water now.

So something did live on Carpathia, Tate isn't hallucinating, and Berger's plans are a whole lot bigger than we might have imagined!

Every week for 5 weeks?

Tonight's ep was good. Seems that there's more afoot than we've thought previously. I think there's still life on Carpathia that they don't know about, I mean it seems their experience of the planet is very limited, with much of it classed as no go, especially when it seems the ocean is within a day's walk, it can't be any more than about a 50 sq.mile radius they really know.

Peep Show. Must Watch.

I forgot about Marchlands, also just gave south riding ago think I will tune in the week for that one have not read the book, so have no idea what will happen.

Gave up on Peep Show this past series. I felt like it's been spinning it's wheels for a few series now.

I still like Peep show a lot, but I know what you mean, Mark and Jez really haven't altered much since the show started.

I think it might have been the whole getting married to Sophie thing that did it in for me. I mean I know the whole thing was things you dream of aren't necessarily as good as you expect, but it all seemed very much "Shit, what do we do now?" after they got them together.

Kind of funny that the ACs now seem to have learnt how to shoot although their accuracy seemed to get much worse the more they shot. Also certain relics found in a tidal pool wouldn't survive long with the enormous tides that those close-proximity moons must drive. We learnt why they don't have vehicles, but the energy field appears to stop even bicycles and carts from working -- WTF. Also for some strange reason, the moons show different phases even though they're in the same part of the sky -- bad astronomy there. Pac must have smelt quite a bit if he'd being wearing the same jumpsuit for 11 years, or did his guide dog wash it for him as well?

Kind of funny that the ACs had been practicing with the guns they stole and can now use them? How the hell does that not make sense? As for their aim getting worse the more they shot...so their first shot, taken when they had the element of surprise, when they had all the time in the world to set it up, was more accurate than when they were involved in a gun battle with moving targets who were shooting back. Well that makes no sense at all does it...

Fair comment about the bicycles, but carts would require horses/oxen to pull them, and we have no evidence of them having bought such animals with them.

The moons thing, well name me on one hand tv sci-fi shows that would have got that right? As for the fossils, given such fossils have lasted millions of years on this planet and we aren't talking anywhere near as long on Carpathia I don't think the fact that they've survived is that strange.

And Pac's outfit likely did smell!

2.7m for the fifth episode.

Sadly I think next Sunday's ratings will make that look like a runaway hit! :(

Interesting that the numbers have picked up though. I know its unlikely but if 2.7 million tune in Sunday I wonder if the BBC will at least pause before finally hitting the kill button!

To be honest if I'd watched 5 out of 8 episodes of something I'd have to see the remainder, even if they shifted the time/date...and in this age of the iplayer...

I'd be interested to see what the final numbers are once iPlayer and HD have been added. Don't often get to see those though. But I did notice Outcasts has been on the most popular list on iPlayer.
