My Justin Bieber Rant

FWIW, I've never heard more than a couple of sampling of Bieber's music and barley give the kid any thought whatsoever.

So, my first reaction to this sentence was to wonder when Justin Bieber started farming barley... :alienblush:

Now, excuse me, I'm going to go write a letter to The Nostalgia Critic and the Angry Video Game Nerd because I think their rants on decades old forms of entertainment are a bit too strong and they may have some anger issues they need to have resolved.

The Critic and the Nerd are obvious characters/cariactures, not their actual personalities.

Re: OP - hate the kid's music, thought for about 6 months his first big hit was sung by a girl, enjoy a good tearing into his work now and then. BUT, he seems like a nice enough guy and it's good that he's doing so well with his demographic.

This is the internet! Everything people say is serious business and to be taken seriously and as real things!

Sheesh.

I post a couple rants about the perplexity and oddness of popularity of some shitty pop star, my thoughts on how human minds think in regards to their preferred gender, and suddenly an entire personality and set of thoughts and behaviors are posed on me.

So, you're saying what you post here is an act and that no one should take it as indicative of how you really feel about anything? In other words, you deliberately go over-the-top and say things you don't mean in order to get a rise out of people?

I'm pretty sure there's a word for that.

I'm pretty sure there's a word for that.

It's all about context, man. Just as "that word" has all kinds of crazy context to it where it seems there's no real "line to it" and someone can poke and prod at another poster to the point that poster has enough and finally retaliates. The former poster getting off scott-free the other poster getting a warning.

So if making a hyperbolic, over-the-top rant on Justin Bieber makes me a "that word" then there's been a shift of what makes a "that word" on this board over even the last couple of weeks.

I made some posts over my dislike, confusion and hate over Justin Bieber and why he's so popular. But, frankly, I don't know why anyone gives a shit over any celebrity. To look at my posts in this thread and somehow think I spend my days just boiling with hate and frustration over Justing-fucking-Bieber is just idiotic. I made a hyperbolic rant, nothing else.

When I post about politics and more "serious" issues that's another thing entirely and is not laced with as much hyperbole. Context, man.

Context.

Seriously, do I need to add a disclaimer to my hyperbolic, ranting-for-fun posts? Is it that hard to read between the lines and think, "Gee, maybe it's possible this guy doesn't really care all that much about some kid half his age and he's just ranting for the sake of entertainment and/or amusement?"

If you were amusing, or entertaining, then no, it probably wouldn't be that hard. As it stands...

You have that a little bit wrong. WOMEN like men; LITTLE GIRLS like little boys.

Which doesn't make sense. Ask a young boy what celebrity girl he thinks is the best looking, he's most "in love with" and he's more likely than not to say the name of some hot, fabulous, celebrity whom grown men drool over. At the youngest he might pick a very young, but still post-pubescent, celebrity (like, say, Miley Cyrus.) He's not going to likely pick some pre-pubescent little girl.

So why do girls, who are supposed to be sexually attracted to men who look like they can defend and provide, attracted to a flaky boy-boy like Justin Bieber? What is it that makes a girl go from crushing on the Bieber/pop flake stars (the boys of Hanson also come to mind) to crushing on, you know, men! Men with abs, and pecs and hard jawlines and deep voices?

Why are girls so messed up is what I'm asking.

Cause in the little girls’ tiny minds, they think the BOY is safe. They’ve been warned away from “men” as being too dangerous. Gotta admit, there’s some validity.

As for me, when I was 7yo and saw “The Sound of Music,” I was taken with Christopher Plummer. I always liked MEN, not BOYS. Which is why half-grown teenaged boys in high school were not attractive to me.

I didn’t do anything about it. I was a depressed mess at that age--but I preferred to admire men, not boys.

And God I hate when pop-stars these days (like Bieber and Brittney (during her tenure) wear that head-set thing with the microphone so they look like part singer part Time-Life Operator. Has audio-recording/detecting technology regreessed so far to the point where a giant microphone is needed 2 inches from your head to record soun

I don't get it either. If you're not named Phil Collins, then you don't need one.

So any time someone declares that they're making a rant all bets are off and they're free to say whatever they want without being called on it?
Yeah, that's exactly what I said.

No, what I said was
I think that some people are forgetting the subject of this thread. It's a rant. It's not supposed to be rational. Lighten up a little. :p
You = not lightening up.

Nowhere did I say that people couldn't discuss the op's rant. I was just trying to get people in a better mood.

BTW, calling someone on something shouldn't include insulting them.

Just because Trekker's excuse after being called on his behavior is that he was joking and being deliberately hyperbolic doesn't make it so. Like I said, he's done this countless times before.

I don't have to "lighten up" about an angry, jealous, irrational, and bizarre rant, and yes, you were essentially excusing it for no other reason than it was a rant.

By the way, I said the behavior was pathetic and petty, not him, which is perfectly within the rules.

Anyway, if you want to dispute the content on what I posted before, go ahead. If you just want to keep telling me to lighten up because you think he was just trying to be humorous (which I don't think he was), I don't see the point in continuing this.
It must be nice to know how to skirt around the rules.

Actually, to me your post seemed angry and irrational. Trekker was talking about a celebrity who won't even see his post or care about it. You were coming down on Trekker. You can rationalize it any way you want to but I was enjoying reading the posts in this thread until it got personal.
Lighten up, don't lighten up. I no longer care.

So, it's ok to make angry, irrational posts about people who can't (or don't) read them? You somehow think Trekker's angry and irrational rant is absolutely fine, just because Bieber himself doesn't post here?

Give me a fucking break.

Jon Stewart seems to like him, so I don't hold the guy any malice. I do gag a bit when that ad talks about his "rags-to-riches" story. Sure, the kid lived in low-income housing, but it's not as if he had to work a double-shift at McDonalds. He was discovered at age 14.

What gets me is all the magazine covers, album covers, posters or whatever else with him standing there looking all bad-ass like he's a fuckin' gansta' rapper or something and, really, he sings fluffy pop-trash bullshit.

This is what pisses me off too, he has one BET awards and is trying to act like a black hip hop gansta when all he is is a little boy (or girl) that is singing whiny love songs.

Boo-freakin'-hoo. Does this impact your life in any way? No? Then get over it.

Last I checked this is a forum where people talk about their point of views. Do you understand that? How did you become a mod?

I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't clear: I think your point-of-view is laughable. It's amazing to go through this thread and see the level of invective and vitriol leveled at a teenage pop star. So much envy, so little time.

Haven't you noticed by now that I care about everything? :p

Well, I'm not sure if I'd noticed that, but I had noticed that you are 'one of the good guys' who cares about doing the right thing. Which was part of the reason I was eager for things to not end on a bad note between you and I - because I'm like that too, and have always appreciated your efforts. Believe me, I understand completely what it can cost a person to try and do the right thing. Believe me - I KNOW. ;)

Sorry to get on your case. I think it was your post in combination with the one before you that set me off. I think I just feel that when it comes to entertainment, people should be comfortable liking whatever they want. :)
Hey, no worries - we are both 'fervent' people - I SOOOO get you in that regard! But I, for one, never saw any guile on your part or anything. I just made the miscalculation of making a flip remark without fully explaining the backstory for it because I really didn't think anyone would care...and worse, I made it backed up to someone else's remark that on it's own was sort of controversial. So the fault is mine.

And I fully agree with you - people should feel okay with liking what they like. Now...I will state my belief that part of that needs to be due to their own self assurance and ability to just be themselves regardless of what others think. However, flip remarks like mine, however innocuously intended, certainly don't help. And generally speaking, it is never my intent to hurt anyone's feelings.

Anyway, I'm good if you are good. :) Group hug and all that! But if you want to talk about it (or anything else) more, please feel free to PM me. I don't like some of the other stuff that is going on in this thread right now...and before I get myself in trouble, I need to stop reading it. ;)

If it makes any difference, I just ignore everything said by anyone in green. :ouch:

I'm a 28-year-old man, and the only effect Justin Bieber has on my life is hearing people bitch about him on social media sites.

That's about the extent of it, yes. It really is amazing (as Robert aptly put it), all the vitriol being spewed in Bieber's direction. It's like complaining that Degrassi: The Next Generation isn't a legitimate television show because it's aimed at teens instead of adults. I mean, god forbid teens have something to connect with. These people don't quite get that it's not aimed at them. If one enjoys Justin Bieber's music outside of the targeted demographic, great, but it's not written and performed with that person in mind.

It must be nice to know how to skirt around the rules.

I didn't "skirt around" anything, nor do anything more than what you're doing right now. Are you skirting the rules too, or does that only apply to people you disagree with?

Trekker was talking about a celebrity who won't even see his post or care about it.
That's not the point. The people here see the misogynist attitude about "messed up girls" and they see the creepy fixation on the masturbatory habits of those same tween girls, for two examples out of many. Just because people here aren't the target of the rant doesn't mean nothing that is said can't bother people here.

Besides that, the majority of topics in this forum deal with subjects and people that don't have a direct effect on or interaction with our daily lives. Are we never supposed to oppose those comments or be bothered by the level of vitriol directed at outsiders simply because it doesn't involve us?

You were coming down on Trekker. You can rationalize it any way you want to but I was enjoying reading the posts in this thread until it got personal.
It was "personal" long before I arrived, just not in any way that you apparently care about or that dampers your enjoyment. Misogynist and creepy posts happen to damper my enjoyment, but to each their own, I guess.

I don't have to rationalize anything. I'm perfectly comfortable with my response to Trekker based on years of dealing with him and his attitude. I was "coming down" on him for his behavior, but despite your incessant whining, that alone is not against nor skirting the rules.

Lighten up, don't lighten up. I no longer care.
That goes both ways.

Trekker was talking about a celebrity who won't even see his post or care about it.

By that logic, I shouldn't be offended by someone going on a rant about how black people are all "n*****s", as long as there are no black people around to hear it.

I take issue with that.
