Outcasts (BBC) series 1 discussion thread

Yeah moving the show's the kiss of death. A real, real shame and, to me at least, people just seem to be kicking the show for really curious reasons. I've seen people say nothing happens, but the 4th episode last night was the best so far, and I almost lost count of how many story thread along or even began last night! People say it isn't sci-fi, but again especially last night a whole heap of stuff that can't be explained (at the moment) happened.

I seriously hope some suit high up in the Beeb has his/her arse kicked for the stupidity of scheduling it in a peak slot on a Monday, then deciding to show the next episode on Tuesday, but only do this for a couple of weeks and...

I'm not saying the show's perfect, but it has real potential, and whilst viewing figures don't lie, I do wonder how much of a drop off was because people just missed episode 2 completely!

And we've had four episodes. FOUR! I mean, thank christ they didn't cancel TNG after 4 episodes, or DS9, or Babylon 5, or Blakes 7...face it most shows need time to grow.

From Digital Spy

Writing on Twitter about the changes, Richards remained defiant, commenting: "I have every confidence we will rule our new slot. Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose!

"Cultdom beckons. And keep watching hardcore because remaining eps great."

Richards has also been defending the show on the Guardian website's community section.

Following a barrage of attacks from TV critics after the first episode, he said: "Sometimes I think it doesn't matter what you write, the same old chorus will start up like the critics on The Muppets (two of my favourite characters) 'Whaddya think? I hated it!'

"I'm not a snob, I like action myself; I don't want to do didactic treatises, etc. The show BUILDS. You may like it, you may not but I'm quite happy we took a risk. I'm glad the much maligned BBC did and some of the moaners would have been screaming blue murder about 'just another cop show'."

He continued: "People have a right not to like things although I think many of the loudest and least interesting critics get a little bit Rumpelstiltskin about it all, stamping the little boot of negativity so hard that they get locked into a discontinuous mindset only recognising 's**t' and 'great' on their radars."

Richards also argued that too many critics were not giving the show enough time, claiming that some of his favourite programmes such as The Wire and Friday Night Lights had not been immediate hits.

"It really takes time to build and I'm very proud of some of the later eps in Outcasts and I think it builds to a very moving finale," he said.

I'd love if he was proved right, it moved and succeeded, though somehow I doubt it. It's a decent show with lots of potential. I'll be sorry to see it go if it continues the way it's been going and then gets canned.

I hope he's right too! I for one will be tuning in Sunday nights, I just wonder if it is possible to be saved now?

I was thinking about setting up a Save Outcasts group on Facebook...I don't know if that's a bit lame though...I dunno, I just like this show, and I don't want it to be the next Earth 2 in my life!!

If you do post it, I'll tweet, join it and everything.

The show does have potential. It has tonnes of it in fact. The problem is, the first few episodes are what hook an audience in but so far I've been left colder than a witches tit. Unlike some other peoples estimation of "These characters are assholes!" I rather like them. And I like the actors and the sets and locations. I like nearly everything about this show, except the lack of pacing when it comes to the story every week. Its always "something happens" and then instead of acting upon it, they piss around for 40 minutes before finally doing something.

I'm not saying the show needs more guns blazing action, it just needs more "drama" in the literal sense. For half of every ep, nothing happens.

There is no chance to save this show, if the controller moves it off to a death slot on Sunday night, it's dead.

Fringe has been cancelled? Bummer, I was enjoying it.
It's certainly not unlikely. For example, there's currently an official media campaign in several social networks which can only be described as desperate.

the story is getting better. too bad it moves at a glacial pace.
Strangely that seems to be an ongoing trend. Even a comatose sloth would've seemed like time-lapse compared to the plot development in Caprica, SGU and a few other shows.

Well, at least SGU had space battles, 'splosions and gun toting action to keep me interested while the story was building.

I know the creator of Outcasts has explicitly said he didnt want that for his show, but if you dont have that you need to have SOMETHING to fill the drama.

In fairness more has happened in 4 episodes of Outcasts than the entire first season of SGU (and I say that as someone who actually really liked Universe!)

I don't get the complaint that nothing happens at all. A lot has happened. What's wrong with people? Are their attention spans that short that they can't focus if there isn't a big boom every 10 minutes? If this were a US show trying the same thing we'd probably still wouldn't know for certain what the ACs were, they'd still be hinting that there was someone or something outside the compound. "We're not the only ones on this planet, and we all know it."

I don't get the complaint that nothing happens at all.

My complaint is Norris's "I'm sucking a lemon" face - it puts me right off me dinner.

I can understand that complaint. In all the different character I've seen her play I don't think she's ever not been the same person she is in this show.

I think the only time she played a different character was in that Stephen fry show.

i decided i couldn't be bothered to watch episodes 3 and 4.

the TV previews woman in the Mirror said Hermione Norris needs to do a comedy because she's committing professional botox: her face is going to get stuck in that frosty expression.
