Exploring the Uncharted Territories: A Farscape Viewing Experience

You know, any other series I've tried to get into featuring a romance as a front-and-center storytelling angle has been a failure for me. It's just not my cup of tea; I don't mind well-told romances so long as they aren't a huge part of the series but when they are, I get bored with it all.

Farscape is such the beautiful exception.

I wonder if that was the plan all along, to have these Earth plants be so important to the Scarrans....
Those flowers weren't from Earth. Crichton just made a bad joke and because of that the Scarrans thought that our planet is full of pretty little red flowers that enhance intelligence.

Harvey's return was rather epic, I have to say. I've really come to love him as a character in his own right, and, frankly, the Nosferatu reference was long, long, LONG overdue, and done masterfully...
Actually, the Nosferatu reference is a throwback all the way to Scorpius' first appearance in "Nerve" where Crichton called him that (in fact, I think that was the very first nickname he gave Scorpius, even before "Scorpy," which I believe Stark coined).

- That the flowers the Scarrans desire grow on Earth is another nice way of tying elements together and making Earth relevant to the larger galaxy, apart from any revenge one faction might wish to exact on Crichton by attacking the planet.
Speaking of this, on my recent rewatch, I realized for the first time that those flowers have been a recurring motif around Scorpius almost from the beginning. Somehow I completely managed to miss this before, but, especially on the scenes on the command carrier, you see them rotating around in his private quarters...

I wonder if that was the plan all along, to have these Earth plants be so important to the Scarrans....
The flowers also appear in "Incubator" sometime during the recounting of Scorpius' past, although I can't recall the exact moment (but I want to say on the planet where his mother was raped).

Yeah it's not exactly the same type of flower because Earth Bird of Paradise don't have a mother planet... that we know of. But it's still cool the bad guy aliens want to take over because of a flower!

I actually like the ending, it fits the show. :) I listened to the commentary and the writer was like "this wasn't supposed to be the ending, we were thinknig of a 5th, 6th , 7th seasons". I can't even think of what crazy thing they would have done in season 7.

Aeryn and John dying finale as a tragic ending might have been fine. But the child Aeryn carrying perishing too would be unacceptable for sensitive fans
...Farscape Peacekeeper Wars was definitely needed....

Flower power!

As long as it's not as bad as the disaster of the mess that the Dead Like Me DVD movie is PW will be fine.
I still haven't gotten around to watching that, despite having a copy of it for over a year. Now that I've read this post, I'm thinking I might just keep my fond memories of Dead Like Me series proper, and ignore the DVD-movie.

[...] I remember watching that and feeling torn between thinking that that was an incredibly unsatisfying place to leave the characters in the series, but at the same time kind of a perfect Farscape ending if that's what we ended up getting. [...]
Reflecting on it a little more over these past few days since I watched "Bad Timing," I think I've come to agree with this statement, more or less. My first thoughts, of course, are above (i.e, NO WAY THAT CAN BE THE END), but, with a few days reflection, I think I could accept that as the end because it does seem perfectly Farscape. Of course, I am still glad that I still have PKW to watch, because I still want to see these characters some more...

I had a similar reaction to Angel's finale too, though I think Angel's ending was a bit more intentional and sent a specific message with how it ended.
"Not Fade Away" is one of my favorite series finales. For me, it's right up there with B5's "Sleeping in Light," The Shield's "Family Meeting," and The Wire's "-30-."

One of my favorite quotes is in Hot To Katratzi, I think Part II but I'm not sure...

Staleek (to Crichton):
You're insane!
Aeryn: Isn't it fun?
Yeah, that was in part two. Can't forget Aeryn's grin as she said that, either. Perfect.

Where is PschoPere's Peacekeeper Wars review ?
I'll probably watch PKW tonight.

Don't watch it.

it is so awful I can't describe how bad it is in words, it's just one of the worst things I have ever seen in my life. I wish I could erase my memory of that movie ever being made. Don't ever watch it. There are new characters, they suck, recasts, they suck, missing characters, no Waffles, the movie wasn't filmed in the same area so the office was much brighter, the cemetery has way too many trees and is just weird.

The movie is worst than Star Wars prequels, worst than the odd Star Trek movies, Nemesis and the new Star Trek, Enterprise and Voyager all combined.

Avoid it, burn the DVD, don't even sell it because then another fan will watch it.

And after you do that send me PKW. ;)

Haven't seen the Wire or Shield, but I still can't watch Sleeping in the Light without choking up in places. I'm not quite ready for a re-watch of Bab5 yet but here in a year or two after more of the show has faded from my memory, I'm definitely looking forward to it.

THE PEACEKEEPER WARS
- I wish this DVD had been released by the same company that did the series DVDs, because I don't care much for the menus.

- In "preparation" of sorts for this movie, I went to YouTube and watched a video containing the different opening credit sequences for the series. I wanted a "proper" Farscape feeling going in.

- CGI Rygel was wrong. I don't care if it was the best way to accomplish his underwater scenes, I only want a frelling puppet.

- I really liked Sikozu's new outfit, though I think she looked better with long hair.

- Loved that Crichton and Aeryn both immediately drew and pointed their pulse pistols after being reintegrated, and how they both switched back to easy banter once weapons were put away.

- Crichton & Aeryn's child ending up in Rygel was pure Farscape insanity - and brilliantly amusing.

- Go figure D'Argo would be even more nervous than John during the aborted wedding ceremony near the beginning.

- Pilot's voice sounded different, yet Lani Tupu is still credited as the voice actor. Did the production team do something different with his voice in this movie?

- So good to see "the girls," as Crichton would call them (Sikozu and Chiana), in action side-by-side again during the defense mercenary attack on Moya.

- Jool's entrance was a little odd, and not least for her jungle woman appearance. She never struck me as being interested in Crichton while she was traveling on Moya. Still, it's nice to see another old crewmember brought back for this movie... even if she was brought back, only to die off-screen through Scarran attack. I was hoping she'd have more involvement, though I suppose the already-large size of the crew precluded much more than she was given on Arnessk.

- Chiana's new eyes were a little too helpful. Between seeing through walls on Moya and pinpointing the best targets on the Scarran flagship, these new eyes feel like a mini deus ex machina.

- If it had succeeded, the Eidelon ability to "influence peace" would have been the big deus ex machina, of course. I would've been a little more willing to accept this one, however, because it does at least feel somewhat earned, considering Arnessk was at least previously introduced early in season four.

- So, Sebaceans were once humans. Can't say I'm too surprised by that; Farscape was, after all, hardly the first series to have "displaced" human descendants.

- Awesome to see Jothee again, even more so than Jool, since his departure from Moya and D'Argo hadn't exactly been on the best of terms. I'm glad they had a chance to talk about the Jothee/Chiana affair, even if it was only a brief conversation. Pretty cool to see a squad of Luxan warriors in action, too.

- Only on Farscape could someone have a baby put inside them during the middle of a firefight. Only on Farscape would someone give birth while under siege in a war-torn city. "Shooting makes me feel better!"

- One of the "little" touches that I especially liked were the brief flashes throughout the movie forward to battle-damaged Moya and injured John lying on a bed, with accompanying voiceover quotes from later conversations. I thought that combination really helped sell the overall atmosphere of the background war.

- I found John's first conversation with Pilot about building the wormhole weapon to be particularly poignant, and I especially liked Pilot's wry "So you'll be starting with me" remark when John pulled out Winona to help make his point about guns pointed at his head.

- Most of the good conversations in this movie were brief, unfortunately necessary due to the runtime and the plot's need to keep moving forward. Chiana's agreement to move to Hyneria with D'Argo is one exception. I was very happy for both of them that she had decided to do so, and I think she had finally reached a point in her life where she genuinely was ready to settle down. Alas, that was not to be.

- Between Talyn and D'Argo Sun-Crichton, Chiana should start considering a career as a midwife (even if she didn't finish helping Aeryn).

- I had grown to rather like Sikozu, so I'm disappointed that she turned out to be the traitor. It was fitting, though, that Scorpius was the one to determine she was and confront her.

- How oddly fitting it felt that John and Aeryn's wedding "ceremony" should finally happen at the same time as their child was being born. Laughed both times Aeryn slapped Stark when he started out with the wrong prayers. Also feels right that the wackiest member of the crew should be the one to preside over the wedding.

- Part of me hates that Crichton and company had to fight beside PKs in this war considering the PKs have been the enemy since the very start of the series. On the other hand, I have to agree with the PKs that the Scarrans are even worse. At least the PKs started out as a benevolent organization was; with proper leadership, perhaps they could become such again in the future. Scarrans simply want to conquer and dominate, and there's not really any working with that.

- D'Argo's death was one of only two things I remembered from the first time I saw PK way back when it originally aired (the other was the birth of John & Aeryn's child). Even knowing it was coming, though, didn't make it any less painful. At least he went out the way he wanted to - defending his new family. "You're the closest friend I have." "You could have done better." "Nowhere in the universe."

- Moya taking off from underneath the planet's ocean was a great majestic shot. After four seasons and a movie, I still love looking at that ship.

- The sight of the black hole ripping Qujaga and the Scarran & PK fleets apart was... horrifying, yet also disturbingly beautiful. Crichton really did step up the scale of destruction from his previous "successes."

- Aeryn screaming over John's body after the wormhole weapon was destroyed felt like it ripped my heart apart. Phenomenal work right there by Claudia Black, continued impeccably in her speech to the comatose John a few scenes later.

- Fully satisfied with the way PKW concluded the series. I avoid rating television series because I find it too difficult, but I can say that Farscape is now up there for me with B5, BSG, DS9, and TOS as one of my favorite science fiction series.

You know, I've only watched PKW once, but I watch this scene every so often just because of how cute it was:

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlmUpVPo9s8[/yt]

Only on Farscape could something like that happen and make it look so incredibly cool. The Look on Little D's face was surprisingly calm, yet said so many words all at once.

Glad you enjoyed the series. It's my favorite Science Fiction series because it did things well that other series' fail do to well, like building relationships between characters but never forgetting who they are or how cool they are in the process. Using John and Aeryn as an example, yeah they were in a relationship, but it never hindered their overall character arcs like I felt something like Delenn and Sheridan did.

And another happy Scaper to help keep Farscape alive.

Indeed... now we just need to get him to read the comics... lol

Yeah, there were a few inconsistencies that jarred with me with the miniseries... Chiana being the big one... not only the eye thing, but it felt like her whole character was a bit overtweaked for the miniseries, and it just felt... off... between that and Jool, it gave the beginning of the miniseries a bit of an odd feel....

By the end, though, it was pure Farscape at it's over the top, bombastic best, and it felt to me, a fitting end... though I could always go for more... :-D

That shouldn't be a problem. He's a comic fan.
I actually do have The Beginning of the End of the Beginning and Uncharted Tales: D'Argo's Lament. They're in a box... somewhere. Since we moved houses last month, most of my stuff has yet to come out of boxes except for the items I use day-to-day.
