Glee creator blasts Slash, Kings of Leon for snubbing show

I am no fan of the show, and I'm not likely to ever be one. But I am of two minds on Murphy's comments. On the one hand, he seems waaaaay over the top regarding "The Kings of Leon". If an artist does not want their music used, well.. I can easily understand that. Murphy's reaction isn't going to help him one bit, and it's liable to have an effect on other artist's interest in letting their work be used - just as others have said already in here.

But now in regards to what Murphy said about Slash's comments... well, put yourself in Murphy's place. Sure Murphy was needlessly caustic, but Slash really came down hard on what Murphy has poured his heart and soul into. Someone trashing it the way Slash seems to ... well, it's understandable to respond angrily like that isn't it?

Slash comes off like an ass for saying what he said; Murphy comes off as childish for responding the way he did. He could have been the better man and responded in a more professional manner.

Yeah, well, welcome to show business, Mr. Murphy.

Slash has more talent in his little finger than the entire cast and crew of Glee.
There are some quite tremendous actors and singers on Glee.

Yup.

I know it's cool to hate on the show, but there really are talented people on it. Lea Michelle and Matthew Morrison were both regular Broadway performers.

One can make the argument that the arangements on the show aren't any good, and some of the singers (looking at Cory Monteith here), but that's it.

I'm not a huge Slash fan (sure he recorded one of the best rock albums ever, but he hasn't done much since), but if I were him I wouldn't want one of my songs being watered down to pop karaoke either (but from a business pov, hell I'd probably do it anyway).

Glee has already sodomized too many good rock songs I like, from Van Halen to Journey and KISS. There are some genuinely good singers on the show, but too many of them are just coasting on nasty overdone pitch correction and shifting the key way down.

If I was a dying homeless man who played the harmonica on the side of the street I wouldn't want the cast of Glee anywhere near me or my music. They take music and turn it into some sort of bizarre watered-down noise. I can't see a song by Slash being anything but mutilated by them.

Do you guys think that Murphy's rants will make artists more reluctant to let Glee use their songs? Or will there be little or no effect at all?

I doubt it will do anything. The show is a huge mega hit and people want their songs out there.

I think Teenage Dream was really nicely done on the show, but I will never listen to the real version anyways. I think artist need to realize that.

There is a different Slash than the one from Guns and Roses?

I do like his stuff in GnR, but he's such a predictable guitarist these days, very fluid but tremendously boring too. He doesn't stretch himself at all. Also I have had the horrible experience of watching him fumble his way through Stone Temple Pilots songs, it really highlighted how uncreative his own style is and how incapable he is of playing out of it.

As far as Glee goes, I can't fault anyone for not wanting their songs to be given the sugary pop treatment, they probably don't have to be such dicks about it either though. And I somewhat agree with the creator's comments that it inspires young kids to take a greater interest in music. At least they don't just cover whatever is at number 1 this week.

I'm a recent convert to Glee and have been catching up on it over the last 10 days or so and i love this show.

Now being mid30s myself i'm obviously not the target demographic for high school problems but i remember my school days and i wasn't amongst the most popular either and had my share of humiliation and nastiness directed at me so to a degree i can still relate.

However Glee is a pop product and just a fun show to watch and repeatedly i was bobbing and moving alongside several songs that just lifted my mood. The show has its problems and some things are hit and miss but nothing is perfect.

The comments though by Murphy are way outta line.. it reeks of "I have the hottest show on earth right now and you pricks dare to cross me?". It just comes off as arrogant and childish but in the long run it doesn't matter because other (bigger) stars are lining up to have their songs on Glee and sometimes even appear on the show.

I know it's cool to hate on popular and mainstream shows but do yourself a favor and youtube some of their songs.. you might get surprised how fun and awesome some Glee versions are (favorites of mine are Empire state of mind, Bust a move and Ice Ice Baby.. seriously!).

I'm a big fan of Glee, and a big fan of Slash (I'm meh on Kings of Leon).

I read what Slash said a week or so ago and I thought it was a bit harsh. But I think Ryan Murphy is being a little undignified here. I mean Kings of Leon didn't really say anything bad about Glee, so his response to them was completely unnecessary.

I thought this glee show was for teenagers and mentally slow adults? Is it actually for the hypothetical seven year old mentioned in the OP?

Teenagers yes (don't ruin a good point by insulting anyone who likes the show). The man petulantly over-reacted to KoL, and it's evident that they had no particular beef with the show, merely giving their standard response to these requests. I suspect he's looked at the success of the show and started thinking he's some kind of genius.

And yet I'd still rather listen to anything Slash does, over a minute of Glee any day of the week.

This Murphy guy needs to get a grip. Is he gonna cry like a bitch everytime someone says something about his show he doesn't like, or everytime an artist turns him down? Fucking drama queen.

The worst part is that kids are growing up with the impression that the songs on Glee are better than the originals.. My 13 year old daughter already thinks that about a bunch of songs she's heard on the show..

Sadly, I enjoyed the show during its initial first few episodes, but quickly grew tired of it...

That's the main problem I have with the show too, even the local radio people were complaining about that a few months back. They will get calls to play a certain song and they will tell them that they just played that song. The callers on the phone want the Glee version.

Sadly I still watch it out of boredom, and the fact it's on before the awesome Raising Hope. I also love Kurt's boyfriend, whose name I can't remember.

They sung a few Bruno Mars songs that I enjoy... they just aren't good that often.

It seems they had a plan for the first 13 episodes, and every time they get more episodes ordered the quality of the show goes down more and more.
