TrekBBS vs. the Music

Captain
Captain
This is how it works:
Post THREE urls of three different songs (not the names or artists of the songs).

Next person (completely!) listens to and then reviews the songs: first write the name of the track, then a little blurb about each one discussing whether you liked it or not and why, knew it or not, and if you think you might want to hear more from the same artist or not. And anything else you want to write pertaining to that song/artist. If you want to you can also rate it on a scale of one to ten or whatever.

This person (the reviewer) then posts three urls of three different songs (without the names or artists).

Next persons reviews and posts 3.

Continue to infinity.

Hopefully you'll find some new interesting stuff, and be able to show the world how much you know about music.

Note: the music can be popular or unpopular, the poster doesn't even necessarily have to like it, and the songs can be from any genre or time period.

I'll start :)

Good idea :)

1. Ska-P - Cannabis:

Knew - no.
Liked - HELL YEAH!
Want to hear more - HELL YEAH!

Ska is a fun music and I love it.

2. D-Bridge - Wonder Where

Knew - no.
Liked - more like indifferent.
Want to hear more - probably not.

I could probably listen to more of it as a background music, but it's just not my cup of tea.

3. Talib Kweli The Blast Remix featuring Erykah Badu
Knew - no.
Liked - not at all.
Want to hear more - no.

Again, simply not my cup of tea.

4. DJ Mujava - Township Funk
Knew - no.
Liked - actually, yes.
Want to hear more - probably yes.

I couldn't open the fifth video.

My five URLs:

Yeah, five songs seems a bit much. I think 3 would be better. We're all slackers here, after all. ;)

I did listen to all songs, but don't have much to say about them. And I might be a bit scathing, so apologies in advance.

1: Ska-P - Cannabis

Well, it's apparently a Ska song advocating the legalisation of Cannabis. As I don't understand Spanish I couldn't glean anymore from the song. Ska isn't really my kind of music, a bit monotonous for my taste.

2: D-Bridge - Wonder Where

Dark electronic music. Wouldn't be out of place on a soundtrack of some dystopian film/series. I had a short phase of listening to electronic music in my late teens but I can't really relate to the music now. Sounds good for those that like this sort of music.

3: Talib Kweli - The Blast Remix feat. Erykah Badu

I've heard of both of them before but I didn't know the song. Relaxed, souly hip hop - not my style. But I'm very picky when it comes to hip hop, anyway, and I prefer harder stuff. It's well made, though.

4: DJ Mujava - Township Funk

Have never heard of him/her/them. Electronic music, which isn't really my cup of tea but it sounds very interesting. Good for background listening and dancing.

5: Nas feat. AZ - Life's a Bitch

I know Nas and oddly enough, the line of the chorus sounds very familiar, but I didn't know the song. My verdict: boring hip hop.

Here are my three songs:

I'll bite. Doing Count Zero's since I'd rather do three than five.

The Beatles - "Magical Mystery Tour"

Well... I'm rather familiar with this one. :p I'm a lover of classic rock and pop, and I've always enjoyed this tune. Not a lot of depth to it, for obvious reasons, but the music is fantastically catchy.

I'd like to hear more from the artist, too... maybe I'll go put on one of their vinyls or their Rock Band game... ;)

9/10

Love - "Alone Again Or"

Now here's one I'm unfamiliar with, but seems quite enjoyable. It's got a nice late-60s sound to it, and the guitar work is excellent. The vocals are nice, if unremarkable, but I have to say that trumpet solo over the bridge sounds weirdly out of place. All the same, I'd be interested in hearing more.

7.5/10

Ton Steine Scherben - "Wir strieken" (I think that's the right order for the artist\title...)

Not sure how I feel about this one. It's a little repetitive in the beginning\at the choruses, and seems a little all-over-the-place and meandering in its approach. Not a big fan of the dude on lead vocals, either. German can sound good when sung, but generally pretending to be a drill sergeant isn't the best approach. Based on this song, not sure I'd want to hear more from the artist.

It's from the album Forever Changes, which came out in 1967, so you're right on the money. Love was a band from LA. It's basically their best-known album. They only made four or so, anyway.

Ton Steine Scherben - "Wir strieken" (I think that's the right order for the artist\title...)

But not quite the right order of letters. ;) The song is called Wir streiken (We're on strike). On second thought, I should have maybe chosen a different song, the version on YouTube sounds weird. But Rio Reiser's singing isn't for everyone anyway, I guess.

DISCLAIMER I am FAR from a music critic, having grown up listening mostly to classical music, so I'm a bit self-conscious with these 'reviews.'

Sam Roberts - Brother Down
Liked this one. Missed most of the lyrics, but that's typical when hearing a song for the first time.

The Tragically Hip - Grace, Too
I have heard of this band, but am not familiar with their stuff. Liked it well enough, but it did go on a bit long.

The Chorus Girl - Steven Page
Ha! I actually got the lyrics! And I like the fairly simple instrumentation in the beginning. It did end up a bit schmaltzy and even though it's a song about a chorus, I could have done without the chorus at the end. Heh.

So I didn't fall instantly in love with any of them, but they'll warrant a second listen.

^ I was close. I know about ten words in German, so that's good enough for me. ;)

Yeah, I wanted to know how they came off to people who don't understand the lyrics because in this case the lyrics are an integral part of why I like them, I think. They were basically the house band of the German left-wing scene in the 70s. But Rio Reiser also wrote a number of rather conventional love songs, the most famous being Junimond (maybe you like his singing better in this one).

I'll do Shurik's songs because only three of them work for me, anyway. Stupid geolocking.

1: Finntroll - Under Bergets Rot

My first thought was: Ugh, metal. That's so not my kind of music. But I actually like this one, except for the singing style, which is a bit of a turn-off, I'm sorry to say. Cool video, too.

3.5/5

2: Therion - Asgard

More metal, but with unusual singing - opera style. Can't say I've ever heard of that combination. Sounds very interesting, though.

3/5

3: Orphaned Land - Sapari

Metal with middle eastern rhythms and singing, which I like. Quite appealing on first listen. I'd be interested in hearing more from them.

Fair enough. I generally enjoy music in languages I don't understand, but it's predicated on me just enjoying the music, for obvious reasons. I do rather like that other song, though... early 80s, that one?

I'll take Mimic's songs since nobody seems to have listened to them yet.

Autumnsong - Holy crap, nine minutes. A good idea that ran for way too long. I would have liked it if it was around three minutes long, especially with the lack of vocals. As it is though, it's elevator music at best. 2/5

I Shot the Sheriff - Holy crap... another nine minutes. A classic tale of the big bad copper chasing down the bandito, the dashing young man who's nothing but trouble, etc. Really, it was okay. But it mostly has to do with the song fitting nowhere into my tastes. 3/5

The Itch - A pretty good song about general blues feelings. I really like this one because I spent much of my early life moving around and this song's essentially about moving to get away, despite it having been proven as a bad idea. 5/5

Now it's my turn...

I was considering linking a different post-rock track that would have clocked in around 18 minutes, so consider yourself lucky.

For itisnotlogical: (I hadn't heard any of these songs before)

Evangelion Metal - It's an interesting song, lots of pace changes help with making it very interesting. However, the voice annoyed me, and I was not a fan of the heavy rock bits.
5/10

Rammstein 'Alter Mann' - Not a Rammstein fan in any sense of the word. The lyrics were interesting though. I just can't bring myself to stand the singing and the music wasn't my cup of tea.
3/10

Franco Battiato 'Centro Di Gravità Permanente' - I liked this one. It successfully made me smile  The video was a lot of fun and this one had the best singing out of the three.

Ga-In "Irreversible"

Pop...reminds me of Madonna. Not too bad. 2 1/2 Stars out of 4.

AYU "Love Song"

Nice music...don't understand the lyrics...but the vocals aren't too bad. :) 3 Stars out of 4.

alan "明日への讃歌"

Sounds pretty...interesting music. :bolian: 3 1/2 Stars out of 4.

I had never heard these before...being in a foreign language may be the problem. :)

It's from his first solo album, Rio I. from 1986.

I'm gonna go again, I like this game.

Blue - "The Birthday Massacre"

I'm a little conflicted on this one. At first it sounded like it would be a typical shouty, pounding heavy metal piece, which I'm not a huge fan of, but the girl singing the verses has an excellent voice—there's almost a synth-pop feel to those parts. But then the chorus just sounds like cliched heavy metal, to me. Had there been more of the girl, I think I would have liked this more. Never heard of the artist.

5/10

Paramore - "Misery Business"

Pop-punk with a female vocalist, nice. Not a genre I listen to frequently, but I do enjoy it in the right circumstances (if I'm in a club [rare, but it happens], drunk enough, and Blink 182 comes on, I'll probably dance like a loon). This is a fun song, and I wouldn't mind hearing more. The name of the artist sounds familiar, but I couldn't name any of their songs.

8/10

Walls of Jericho - "A Trigger Full of Promises"

Yeah, this is the song I was afraid the first one would be. I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it when someone screams instead of sings for the vocals; it's a great way to turn me off of a song. The guitar-work doesn't sound like anything special to me, either. The drumming is good in places, but I need more than that to really enjoy a song. Never heard of the artist.

1/10

I am gonna make my review format cleaner here...like those above...unlike my last post.

I will do a scale of 1-10 from here on out.

Great Lake Swimmers "Palmistry"

Never heard band or song before.
It was ok...kinda chill. Give it a 7.
I wouldn't mind checking out more.

Guster "Two Points For Honesty"

Have heard of Guster...but never listened to them.
This song is pretty good...like the melody alot. Give it a 9.
Will check out more. :)

Bruce Cockburn "If I Had A Rocket Launcher"

Never heard before.
Didn't like it...not really my style. Give it a 5.
Won't check out more.

Here are 3 more...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFvCx6w_ptE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LapknbGS7Os

This game is pretty enjoyable. :) These are Jetfire's songs.

Tori Amos - Bouncing Off Clouds: The singer needs to speak up more, but otherwise pretty good. I thought the black and white footage in the video was a nice touch. The pronunciations also make it difficult to tell what is being said. A pretty good song about how fairytale weddings and happily ever after don't really happen.
4/5

Guano Apes - Open Your Eyes: A pretty neat song in terms of sound. Kind of punky with bits of metal in there too. I didn't really like the vocals though, they lacked any sort of melody. Some epic guitar though, and that can save any song in my eyes.
3/5

UNSUN - Whispers: Finally, you're speaking a bit of my language, in the musical sense :) a pretty epic metal song with some strong female vocals, something of a rarity in a male-dominated genre. Sounds a bit like Nightwish, if NW had focused less on the symphonic element and more on the metal bit.
5/5

Now it's time for my three again:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfSAcSPcBPs

Scapegoat Wax - Almost fine

Cool beat, and interestingly weird delivery, but pretty corny lyrics. I guess it's pretty funny though on the second listen. "Every thing is almost fine,I just got a few of these frustrations" is a great chorus line though. Still, don't think I'll check them out more, it's just not that gripping and wants to be too unconventional for its own good.

Iron Savior - Megatropolis

First off, the album artwork is REALLY cool. Not really my music, I think I'd prefer it more withouth the singing (except for the chorus maybe). I like the solo, but as I said, I'm not really into power metal (or whatever this is) and won't really follow up.

Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark

Hmm, again, not really my type of music. It's a good composition though, obviously these guys know how to make music. The lyrics are a little over-explanatory. Again, another pretty good guitar solo, though not all that special.

By the way, for people not in the US for whom the "content can't be displayed" message pops up as often as for me, check out http://unblockyoutube.co.uk/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qPv4rtVL64

edit: wow, wtf?? i've tried pasting two different links for the same song which i originally wanted (the second song) and each time it redirects me to another song by the same artist!! what the hell?
i want it to link to this song: but instead it always goes to this song: . Very strange. In any case, they're both cool tunes.
