Upcoming Publications: January/February 2011

I got an eMail earlier today that amazon.de has shipped my copy, so I would guess it should begin to appear in the book stores in the US as well.

The MMPBs usually start to appear in the last two weeks of the month preceeding their "official" release month.

Thanks, Defcon; I did not know that they started to come out towards the end of the month before the official release. The Borders bookstore I go to is a little behind, but you gave me a rough idea when I should be expecting Disharmony. I always call the store before I go over there, but it's nice to know when the book should be out so I don't pester them for nothing. :)

If you shop at Borders, you can go to www.bordersstores.com and search their inventory at any store online, avoiding the need to call them and possibly deal with someone who will give you the wrong information. Their inventory is 99% accurate - the only times I've ever used it and been disappointed is because the book arrived but the employees were too lazy to put it on the shelves.

What I have done in the past is use the hold at the store for me feature so I don't have to go and try to find it. And I know it will be waiting for me when I go.

^ haven't you already got a copy?

Not quite the same, though. As a beta reader I saw a much earlier e-version of "Paths of Disharmony". When I own my own hardcopy of the MMPB, later today, I'll be able to see exactly how many of my suggestions Dayton Ward incorporated into the final manuscript that was delivered to Jaime Costas. :techman:

I once got an advance version of "Andor: Paradigm" from Marco Palmieri, but it was an airmailed print-out of the corrected galleys that was essentially a photocopy of the final book (with a beautiful A4 colour photocopy of the WoDS9 Book 1 cover) and, sadly, way too late to suggest any changes by that point. (And I'd found a biggy.)

Thanks, guys; that is good and helpful information. It will save me some fairly long "on-hold" times!

When I realised, early in 1980, that ensuring I get every new ST book and comic in a timely manner was going to be frustrating and tricky here Down Under, I began grooming long-term customer/manager relationships... with numerous shops. I would quickly work out who the ST fans were in each bookshop I frequented, chat to them about upcoming news (esp. delayed titles), sometimes even providing them with obscure details (once an ISBN that had been left out of the orderpak) essential for their ordering process.

This diligence has certainly paid off. I've made some great friendships, helped the shops anticipate which ST titles might be more anxiously awaited, and which books were simply reprints with new titles (often not clear in the orderpaks) established which shops would be most reliable with standing orders and generous discounts, and I rarely miss a title.

Some of these jobs would normally be done by a Simon & Schuster Aust. marketing person (and I've even met them at a fan gathering - and I gave them lots of feedback), but if they can't find time to support the ST line, I'm happy to do my bit. And it pays off in spades. Eventually.

I was interested to see a shop in Dublin today selling Paths of Disharmony but no shop has Rough Beasts of Empire yet.

Did you ask them to check their computer and see whether it had come in? Perhaps their entire incoming stock of that particular book went into the back room as standing orders for regular customers?

I wouldn't expect RBoE to be here until next week. Books normally arrive the first week in the month following an American release so as RBoE is an January release it should be here by next Friday. That is how it usually happens.

PoD though was in Forbidden Planet whom I suspect airmailed it in. They generally get an airmail order every three or four months which is why these anomalies sometimes happen. Destiny 2 was in Dublin about three weeks before Destiny 1 thanks to that. Sadly economics mean FP don't get airmail shipment every month.

That explains it. In Sydney, Australia, our Galaxy Bookshop has always airfreighted one batch and usually topped up a few months later with the cheaper, later, locally distributed batch from S&S Aust. - but... since JJ's ST movie, S&S Aust have been airfreighting all ST, and not passing on the additional cost! Galaxy has price matched - I think, perhaps, because the Diamond comics distributor no longer carries Pocket items, and S&S Aust. have responded to demand.

Got Rough Beasts yesterday though the sad news is that one of my regular Trek bookshops shut down this weekend, a victim of the recession it seems.

So why is March a dud month where we get nothing new?

Probably because of the transition from Margaret Clark to Jaime Costas in the editor's seat. Remember that it takes a long time to get from the commissioning of a book to its publication. We're just about at the point where the books Margaret commissioned have all come out and the books Jaime commissioned are about to start coming out. Since Margaret's layoff was rather sudden, it took some time to get a new editor appointed and up to speed, so presumably it resulted in a minor gap in the schedule.

"Beneath the Raptor's Wing" in MMPB will be brand new for all those people who refuse to buy trades, or who like their ST novels to be the same height. Quite a lot, judging from complaints that occur here regularly.

Just finished Rough Beasts of Empire. IMHO the best one the Typhon Pact series so far, I love the development of Sisko's character and the political machinations of the Romulan Empire, definetly one of my favorites. I really want to read Paths of Disharmony, but I can't find it at any of my local book stores, I might just have to buy it online.

I just recently came back to reading ST lit, and I am wondering why it is that no stores seem to keep a good stock of the books. Is it poor marketing, poor demand, or is it just the reality of selling physical books in the 21st century? I really like them, I just wish that there was more.

Apparently, the Trek Lit audience largely orders books online, so there's not as much market for them in brick-and-mortar stores.
