Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for runner-up.

I don't think I've ever thought about considering this a "Sci-Fi" movie......though I really liked the movie quite a bit. Still, I think it's definitely far more of a romance/relationship study with a pseudo sci-fi plot device to facilitate the story but very little "sci-fi" per-se.

In any case, I voted for Inception but only because I didn't see a lot of movies like The Fountain or Moon or others that people are voting for. (I don't see a lot of movies period.).

My top five (because I can't just name one because there have been a lot of great science-fiction films in the last 11 years):

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2. Children of Men
3. Inception
4. District 9
5. Moon

Star Wars is not Sci-Fi, but rather Fantasy, so you should exclude it from the poll.

I voted DISTRICT 9 but it could have also been CHILDREN OF MEN. Both are masterpieces!

I voted Star Trek. The fanboy in me won out over the serious movie critic.

Could have easily voted for Moon, Wall-E, or District-9 instead.

Am I really the only person to vote for WALL*E?

Well fine. You're all wrong. :p
And Star Wars is NOT science fiction! *headdesk*

It's got spaceships, aliens and robots. Let's not get fussy.

Whether any of those movies are worth voting for is another thing entirely.

No, it's both. :p

I agree! How can the fantasy aspects of SW eliminate the science fiction elements?

Taken from my 2000 post on the definition of Science Fiction:

A great question

There are lots of definitions for SF, and I myself tend to be rather strict
about it, though within the definition the range of stories is quite broad.

SF is a story about change; a new paradigm. Its fiction set in a world that
differs from our everyday world in a way that importantly involves science or
technology. This can include sociological changes as well as changes in
hardware. It can include stories set in the past, but mainly in the future. I
would include doomsday scenerios and post-apocalyptic movies of every kind (On
the Beach, Dr Strangelove). It includes alternate worlds and stories that exist
in the modern day but with slight twists(Fahrenheit 451; Truman Show) It differs
from pure fantasy in that even seemingly magical changes should have some
rationale beyond simply saying its so for its own sake, as long as its fairly
internally consistent(such as Star Wars). Scientific accuracy is a plus, but may
take a back seat in favor of excellent high concept or speculation.

As far as rating them goes, its a mix. Obviously I had to have some personal
enjoyment in watching it, entertainment value is basic and important, but I also
like intelligent, sober movies or movies that totally twist reality: A range
which includes Andromeda Strain, a dry but engrossing presentation; and Matrix,
which totally turns every expectation on its head. A movie with complex themes
that may not be executed as well as another, less demanding film may not rate as
highly, as in the case with Slaughterhouse 5 compared to Star Wars. I tend to
like movies with a message..some sort of relevency, these will rate higher
usually for me. A sense of wonder is perfect for the visual medium and I also
think its important. Basic filmmaking techniques and the normal aspects of any
good film also applies.

Star Wars is not Sci-Fi, but rather Fantasy....

Same is true of Star Trek. Should it be excluded too?

Of course, one of the Star Trek's made in the 21st century was excluded, but I wouldn't blame anyone for forgetting that one.

Anyway, I voted for Inception because it's the best of the ones that I've seen.

I'm a little surprised that there's no Serenity love so far.

Star Wars has always been a hybrid of fantasy and science fiction. Since the force was explained away by microbes, it's only headed closer to SF territory than fantasy. Of course, Dennis is soon to arrive and tell us that SF is just a subgenre of fantasy, and, really, it's not worth quibbling over. Is anyone really going to nominate the Star Wars prequels as being the best of anything?

It's a toss up between Children of Men and Moon for me. I think I'll vote for the latter since the former has gotten so much more attention.

Hmm, based on this list, I'd have to pick:

1. Children of Men
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

There are several others that are good/great, but those two stand out to me.
