Duke Nukem Forever

i love the way they blur out the tits and then put the word 'fucking' in there.

I thought the same thing. Welcome to America, the same could be said for this boards rules as well I suppose.

I have a feeling people will be a little disappointed by this because after all this time anything less than "fucking epic" will be perceived as a let down. Unreleased, DNF is the stuff of legend, once it's out we'll have to settle for it being just another game.

Yeah, exactly my feeling. I kind of don't want it to be released

God, this game's been in production so long, there must be a whole ton of development logs, diaries, concept art, exhibition demos, etc. hidden in some office somewhere. Imagine trying to stuff 12 years of growth into special-edition bonus content

Yeah, they're gonna have to make a "Collector's Edition" that includes the original game and a 2-hour documentary of DNF's development history. It really is legendary.

You can tell a game might be good when it ticks every Box on the ESRB content rating!

This looks like a lot of fun

Edit: Also having The Prodigy is pretty cool too

Edit: Edit: Also isn't it weird how they don't censor the Fucking when it's typed, but bleep it when Duke says it?

The bonus content would likely be longer than the game

and will probably include about 2 dozen rudementary demos cobbled from all the different game engines they tried to develop the game on

Now where'd I put that pre-order receipt?

That'd be cool but probably wouldn't happen just due to licensing issues. I remember they originally were using the Quake engine, then Quake II, and then I think they switched to Unreal and just kept upgrading whenever the engine did. But as a result they were constantly redoing the art assets and learning the new features of each upgrade, so the damn thing never got done. But think about that: this game has been in development since the original Quake. :wtf:

Whoever was in charge at 3D Realms was pursuing a completely unrealistic goal: releasing polished, kickass Duke game with cutting edge technology. The original game wasn't cutting edge, but it was good enough. A game like this isn't about technology, it's about style.

Nah, Quake II maybe, but not Quake. I remember hearing some comments that the early screenshots were using Quake II, but they were merely mockups from what I remember. They hadn't really started working on it back then, which was around 1997/98. But yeah, there was a problem with the team. Wonder if the guy in charge was OCD, because it certain seems they were trying to achieve perfectionism.

Basically this from the timeline someone put together:

Janurary 1997: Work on DNF started.*

April 1997: Quake 2 engine purchase announced. (they got it in mid-late 1997 before Quake 2 was released). Scott Miller states that he is confident that DNF will be released by mid 1998 and prey in late 1998 making 1998 a bit year for 3DR. He also mentions that his confidence is not misplaced.

Huh, I could've sworn it started with the original Quake engine. Or I'm just mixing it up with Half-Life.

Defiantly wasn't the original Quake as I'm pretty sure that came out before 'Duke Nukem 3D'. In fact I remember there being a joke Quake reference in there somewhere (and a Doom one too.)

So this time round we can expect a piss take of Halo and Gears of War perhaps? :)

"I ain't afraid of no quake!"

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Yeah, I guess it was Quake II. I just remember seeing a Duke model in some magazine (PC Gamer?) back in the day and it looked very Quake-ish, but I guess it was Q2.

Haha yeah, in fact I remember there was quite the rivalry between Quake fans and Duke fans, with Duke fans pointing out that Quake had many shades of brown and not much else while Duke was colourful. And there was a mass amount of irony when they revealed to be working on DNF using the Quake II engine.

^That's pretty much what put me off Quake back in the day. Hell, "ugly brown" is also one of the main reasons I still steer clear of most modern shooters.
Other than Duke 3D, Dark Forces 1&2 and the original Doom, I never really bothered with the slew of FPS games that were popular at the time...until Golden Eye and Half-Life came out anyway. To this day I've still yet to play any Quake, Unreal or any Doom other than the first.

What Duke always had and the others lacked though was a sense of "colourful" fun. If the trailer is any indication that's still the case and I'd say it's something sourly lacking in gaming today. Who cares about realism when you can punch a giant alien in the goolies? ;)

That is a pretty addictive trailer. Maybe just because the character of Duke is so great. He represents every satire of political correct America that ever existed, and he does it with a cigar in his mouth.

This game looks juvenile, retarded and displays complete disregard for the laws of physics. It should be banned in case 8 year-old boys get their hands on it and ask their parents embarrassing questions about dancing nude ladies. It also displays an extreme level of degeneracy that will disgust Islamists and incite terrorism.

But I still want some.
