Buffyverse: Extent of the Old Ones' domains

EJA

Fleet Captain
Okay, so we know from various episodes of BtVS and Angel that during an epoch known as the Primordium Age, Earth was inhabited by a very large number of demons, e.g. Illyria. But was Earth the only planet they had any real presense on, or did they dominate other parts of our universe? They had access to other dimensions, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them to have the means of travelling to other planets within one dimension. But then it's stated a couple of times in the shows that the Old Ones constantly fought one another over domination of Earth; Illyria's seat of power was in prehistoric California, and she was frequently targeted by rivals who wanted her territory for themselves. Why make such a fuss over one planet, if they could go anywhere they liked in the universe and forge their empires on other worlds?

Susan Ivanova from B5. I believe the poster was making a reference to the Old Ones of the Buffy Verse being the First Ones (the first sentient intelligent species in the Babylon 5 universe).

I don't think we're ever going to learn the definitive answers to these sort of questions. Joss Whedon probably wouldn't want to reveal too much about the Primordium Age, and prefer to keep it vague and mysterious. Which I can't really begrudge him for.

I think that was the intent yes. There was some tease of this in "Fray" where the new leaders of the Watcher's Council were located on a planet.

hey remember lorne home world where we got to see cordilia in that hot bikini out fit.
well his people are a demon race . and , what about season three premire episode anne where buffy went to rescue the homless kids in that other diaminsion .
so that proves there on other worlds . but, they like ours for some other reason.

Those were other dimensions. This thread is wondering if demons are on other worlds within this dimension.

Eh, the Watcher's Council on another planet in Fray? I don't recall that. Could you give us some more information on this, please?

The Watcher's Council on Earth had become a group of fanatics and lunatics, obviously lost their way. I think now that I think about it...they were just Old Ones on the planet I mentioned.

Yes, I recall the scenes you refer to in Fray now. I'm more of the opinion that the world the demons in the prologue inhabited (which may, or may not, be a planet similar to ours) was located in a separate dimension, rather than somewhere out in space in our own. If you want a Trek analogy, I think that Buffyverse demons are more like Species 8472, who dwell in Fluidic Space, a realm of entirely different physical structure to our own.

Of course, one major obstacle to the notion that the Old Ones ruled the entire universe is that it's been stated several times on BtVS and A:tS that the rise of humanity was what lead to the downfall of the Old Ones, and humans only exist on one planet within this dimension. If demons still rule in outer space, why don't they just come and attack Earth? They wouldn't have to depend on unreliable dimensional portals and spells.

And it's been stated that the Old Ones constantly warred with one another over Earth. But why, if they possessed the ability to travel to other planets were they could build their own empires separate from each other? Add to that the huge amount of demon races living on just one planet.

I believe it's Drogyn who says to Angel in one episode of A:tS that the Old Ones were constantly fighting and killing one another; the number of sarcophagi in the Deeper Well is testimony to the violent lives they led. Would such beings really be able to travel beyond one little planet, if they were that preoccupied with being at one another's throats all the time?
