Anyone else a fan of 'Soldier' (1998)?

First third or half is awesome.. the training of the special soldiers, their missions and how Russel is competing against the new breed of supersoldiers.

After that the movie drops very sharply.

yah, i agree with this.

the film is just pure awesome in the beginning with how the soldiers are trained.

when that scene where todd and the other are 2 soldiers are on the ground is over, the movie starts to decline.

still some great action towards the end.

any other movies like this?

Good little show. I like it. It's been on wait in my Netflix queue forever, so somebody is obviously watching it!

'Soldier' is a guilty pleasure of mine. Not much of a plot, but I like the premise (soldiers selected and trained from birth versus genetically enhanced soldiers), and it paid off in the action department.

it's kind of similar to that episode 'Red Rising' S1E12 of Dark Angel with the Red Series. can anyone recommend other similar movies or shows that are similar? i'm really looking for another great movie to sink my teeth into.

For me, it sits among other mostly forgotten sci-fi thrillers made over the last couple decades:

Strange Days

Johnny Mnemonic

Equilibrium

Sunshine

Stargate (it would fall into the same category as the others if it hadn't had a wildly popular TV series to follow it... plus, it was the original Kurt Russel as a Badass Soldier movie)

Pitch Black (it was a cult hit at first which grew in popularity enough to warrant a bigger-budget sequel)

The Fountain (not really the same type of movie at all, but I think it's a criminally underappreciated masterpiece)

And, if you liked Dark Angel, you should watch the two Ghost in the Shell movies and the excellent, excellent Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex series, to which Dark Angel owes a great deal (and both DA and GITS owe everything to author William Gibson).

If you're a reader... check out the aforementioned William Gibson, and Richard K. Morgan - specifically, the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy - Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, and Woken Furies. Those are the three most absolutely badass stories I've ever read, and they deal with genetically engineered/cybernetically enhanced bodies built for combat, etc.

It wasn't too bad of a movie, but nothing groundbreaking either. I enjoyed, the few times I saw it, but have to agree that it did seem a bit cheap in production values.
