Johnny Depp & Lone Ranger reboot

Didn't see anything about this.

STORY

Basically, Johnny will be taking on the role of Tonto in this movie.

One part I find interesting:
....Tonto was a sidekick in all the Lone Ranger series. [This film] is a very different approach to that partnership. And a funny one I think.
I wonder if this will be along the lines of the new Green Hornet, with the "sidekick" doing all the work and the "hero" getting the credit.

Interesting. George Clooney had been long attached to this project which had been in development hell until recently I guess. I wonder if they'll keep the connection between GH and The Lone Ranger.

As I understand it, the characters now owned by different people, making any explicit connection legally dubious.

And, of course, there's the no way the Ranger could refer to a descendent who hasn't been born yet. "You know, Tonto, someday I hope I have a great-nephew who carries on our tradition with his faithful Asian sidekick . . . ."

That sort of allusion works better backwards than forward.

Unless they make the Lone Ranger a time traveller!

Hey, if they're gonna have a vampire killing Lincoln...

That's werewolves.

Unless Hollywood has homogenized the monster genre to the point where silver works on vamps

Can't tell by your emoticon if your laughing at your own joke or thinking it would be funny "if".

Silver works on the True Blood vamps.
In the Dracula 2000 movie it also has an effect and they even go to the point of explaining why. Linked to the betrayer of Christ and his 30 pieces of silver for payment.
Also, Blade, silver works there.

As for Lone Ranger I'm willing to wait till I hear more. I may be among the few but I always wanted a third Antonio Bandares Zorro movie.

^ I'm never sure. I don't really get into the genre that much, but have heard a lot of complaints about those kinds of things.

I prefer Chinese hopping vampire.

I thought we were past the day when Hollywood smeared bad makeup on a white guy and called him an Indian. You mean to tell me NO Native American actors are available for this role? And Johnny Depp is, what, 1/64th Cherokee or less?

Shame on Depp and shame on the producers. :klingon:

Why would this stop that happening? Not saying there will be a Zorro 3 but surely if anything a successful LR movie might give them the incentive to make one.

IIRC, the script for Lone Ranger is to be written by the same writers as Zorro, which is good news. I think a LR movie should be in that vein (though I want this Lone Ranger to be the original character, not a new one being trained by the original, like Banderas & Hopkins).

With an actor as charismatic as Depp playing Tonto, they'll need to cast the Ranger very well or he'll be totally overshadowed. It'll need to be someone with the wattage of Pitt, Clooney or the like. Cast Orlando Bloom and he'll be totally forgotten. Though if they were willing to take a chance on someone less known - and cheaper - I'd like to see Nathan Fillion land the role.

Fuck Nathan Fillion.

"they are casting Little Orphan Annie"

"What about Nathan Fillion?"

"they are casting lassie"

"what about Nathan Fillion?"

"They are doing a remake of showgirls"

"what about Nathan Fillion?"

I saw this yesterday and my first thought was that they should do a Green Hornet tie-in, but as mentioned, I don't know how they'd do that. A Seth Rogen cameo as one of Britt's ancestors doesn't seem too fitting. Maybe if they ever made another Green Hornet movie, they can do a tie-in there.

I wonder if this will be along the lines of the new Green Hornet, with the "sidekick" doing all the work and the "hero" getting the credit.
I had the same thought when I read that Depp would play Tonto.

 No, I haven't suggested him for any of those roles. And indeed, in a thread the other day, I poked fun at the tendency to suggest him for any role going. But I do think he'd be good for this particular one. Not that I think he has a chance of getting it, of course.

As regards George Clooney...like I said before,no way should the Lone Rangers teeth be whiter than his hat.

I only meant it as "I wanted a Zorro 3". Didn't occur to me someone might infer I thought one wouldn't happen because of Lone Ranger. But realistically that ship has likely sailed as the box office wasn't stellar for Zorro 2 back in 2005. But hey it was 7yrs between the two. Maybe Lone Ranger could ignite some interest in a Z3.

I'm all for the classics. What with Sherlock, Zorro and Green Hornet the last 5yrs bring on Lone Ranger. We'll all forget about that Spirit movie. Maybe Phantom, John Carter of Mars and Doc Savage from the 'pulp' era can hurry up and make appearances.

I think a John Carter movie is supposed to be on the way, while Shane Black of Lethal Weapon fame was writing a Doc Savage movie. There was also talk of a Phantom movie coming (unrelated to either the Billy Zane one or last year's Syfy miniseries) but word on that seems to have stalled.
