Reuters - China's first capsule hotel opens in Shanghai

Has anyone stayed in one of these things?

The ultimate in people-storage technology or a dystopian science-fiction tale come to life? Your call.

If they'd had that sort of thing at Victoria Station back when I went 'Interrailing', the guy driving the floor-washer wouldn't have had to wake me up that many times the night I slept there...

What happens when you wake up in the middle of the night, need to pee, but went to sleep with your feet towards the door?

I used to stay in them when I traveled to Tokyo. I love capsule hotels. The thing is, you need to be able to speak a bit of the native language, they usually aren't too pumped about idiot drunk foreigners around.

Amazing deal, though. $40 for a comfortable place to sleep, free tea, coffee and cookies, showers AND porn on the little TVs inside? Just outstanding.

I'm surprised at how small the televisions are. I guess you're only viewing them from a short distance away, but combined with some of the other decor features it lends it an air of not so much being the future as a 1960's vision of the future.

I'm a touch claustrophic but I admit I'd be interested to try it out.

Those rooms look damned uncomfortable. I'm 6' 5"...I probably wouldn't even fit in one of them.

Anyone who's thinking of staying in one of these things should read J.G. Ballard's Billennium first.

I can't imagine that the walls are thick enough to block out the noise from the people around you.

I would like to think if I had the money to fly halfway around the world I could also afford enough room to stand up in my hotel room.

The next generation of capsule hotels will feature a 12x12x12 cuboid arrangement of rooms for 1728 capsules total. To exit or enter your capsule you punch in your room number and the cube rearranges itself until your capsule is aligned with the entryway. See the horror film Cube for additional details.

I would sleep in one if they were located next to an airport and I was stuck in an airport. Is there anywhere to put your luggage?
