Will Murray Gold continue?

I'd be very sad if he did leave, as I'm a big fan of his work as well. It makes great listening on the bus, or those long bike rides home from work.

What I'm wondering is if there'll be an album of music from this years Who specials.

I think I read something on OG-- sorry, GB-- recently that indicated one was in the cards. But it may have been wishful thinking.

I love listening to "The Futurekind" when driving on the highway.

I read something as well that there could be a Specials CD released around the time the normal series CD is released which has been around November. With the Christmas special two parter though being at the end of the year and early 2010 I doubt we will get one. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to release a two disc set next Nov with the Specials on one disc and Series Five music on the next disc.

I hope that Moffat and company retain Murray Gold. He's one of the fantastic things about the current era that I love and as some of you know I salivate at at thought of getting new music. It would also be interesting if they decide to go in another direction for Moffat and Matt Smith.

Sorry for the bump, but does anyone have the full comic of this?

I know they did a whole "The history of doctor who" thing

That's just brilliant. I'd forgotten this thread though. Far as I know Murray is locked up for the next two series.

Was just listening to the Specials soundtrack last night. I LOVE his work; it adds a lot to the series.

I hope so. Reading this thread (and only just noticing it's 18 months old - naughty, naughty!) I have to add that, for fear of getting flamed, I never was a fan of Doctor Who's music during the classic era. Theme notwithstanding, I tried time and again to get into the music, I bought soundtrack albums, etc. And except for a few phrases here and there, I found the music to be background, and that's all. Nothing memorable. That's not to knock Simpson and the others - they did their job. But since Doctor Who came back in 2005, and I think this is a point some have missed or avoided, Gold's music has been a character in the series, almost as important as Rose or Martha. Gold's music is the first DW soundtracks I've bought that I actually enjoy as music. There are only a few other film/TV composers who have managed to deliver this sort of standalone enjoyment for me - John Williams (virtually anything he does), Jerry Goldsmith (primarily his Star Trek TMP score, but others as well), James Horner's Titanic score (which, ignoring Celine Dion, is the best album Enya never recorded) and Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks).

I understand the complaints that people have had towards Gold's music...that it is too bombastic and not enough subtlety to his motifs and themes but I think that is a generalization. If anyone has listened to the soundtracks you can hear his genius and more "softer" themes. Amy's theme is a prime example. He plays around a lot with different harmonies and musical notes. I dunno. I just think he's brilliant.

^Thank God the Season 5 soundtrack is finally being released in the States. I can't wait to get it.

^ Yep...finally a North American release. I suspected it would be in Feb. That has been when the previous ones came out.

One could argue that television shows of the past , while usually having great theme tunes, have in general had pretty bland and generic incidental music throughout the music. It seems only in recent years has incidental music in TV shows actually become good. Whether it be Murray Gold's work on Doctor Who or Bear McCreary's work on BSG. I suppose it makes up for the fact that most shows don't have opening themes anymore.

The complaints that Gold is too bombastic or "too loud" are just bullshit. Of course a tune like "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" is loud and bombastic, it's meant to be. It plays during the action scenes and trailers, what are we supposed to be listening to, a soft reflective melody?

Besides, like you said, Gold does softer tunes perfectly. Aside from Amy's theme, there's also Rose's theme and "The Dream of a Normal Death" certainly isn't bombastic. For that matter, the Gallifrey theme certainly is versatile. It works well in its original verison, heard in The Sound of Drums, which isn't really bombastic. But then in The End of Time we hear a bombastic variation of it which still sounds perfect. There's also a choral version of it (on the Specials Soundtrack titled "Gallifrey") which sounds awesome as well.
