NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

Dumb though, if you're the obvious #1 draft pick, which it seems he is (I don't follow college at all), ya leave right then and there... it's not like your value can really go up.

I guess there is the looming problem of the lockout... I'm not sure how that affects this year's draft class... but coming out of the draft still seems like safer money to me.

Perhaps he's simply happy there and wants to get his degree?

I'm not one to criticize someone for advancing their education, but...

If you leave early and shred your ACL on you first NFL snap, and let's say it's career ending for whatever reason, you can put those guaranteed millions toward paying for your senior year and a degree.

If you have the same injury on the last play of the nobodygivesashit.com bowl, you're screwed. You're a college graduate just like the rest of us with a fancy piece of paper and bum knees.

^ Seems to've worked out ok for Sam Bradford.

I think it's great that he's staying. Good to see a superstar prioritize his degree.

Also, apparently his sister's a freshman at Stanford this year, so that may be a factor too.

Something that makes this a tad more puzzling, or at least unexpected, is that a rookie wage cap will be in place by the time Luck does come out for the draft won't it? By delaying he's definitely costing himself some $$$. But... he quite possibly does have his priorities set in a way that runs counter to most folks, so perhaps money isn't as important as it would be to so many of us.

I don't understand the argument of athletes turning pro versus staying to get your degree. If you know you're going to be drafted high and getting a multi-million dollar contract, you can always go back to school later on your own dime. You suffer a career-ending injury while in college, you get your degree and then what?

Now basketball is a different story, since often times 100 different kids will be told they're going in the first round, which obviously can't happen.

Baseball is the biggest crap shoot of them all, since half of the first round picks never even make it to the bigs.

Looks like Miami is now keeping Sparano:

Wow, how stupid is Miami? Not that I want Sparano to lose his job, but the Dolphins have put themselves in a really awkward position. How comfortable do you really think Sparano is working there now that he just watched his job get offered away for $8 million? Maybe Harbaugh will still become a Bronco.

As for Luck, I say good for him.

I think the true damage comes when Miami tries to hire a quality Offensive Co-ordinator and bring in free agents. Because everyone now knows that the entire coaching staff is on thin ice.

Plus, I found it pretty bush-league that Harbaugh would be interviewing for a job that wasn't even open.

Just a rumor for now, but rumors say Harbaugh is expected to take the 49ers job with a five-year contract.

^ Interesting; John Elway seems to think he's staying at Stanford.

Elways also says the next coach should be a "believer in Tim Tebow." Ugh, kill me now. :ack:

ETA: Of course, now CBS is reporting the "Harbaugh to 49ers" report. Oh well, the Tebow comment remains.

ESPN says 5 years, $25 million for Harbaugh to take over at San Francisco. That puts him higher than average ($3.25 million), but below Jeff Fisher and John Fox territory (Fisher gets $5.75 million/year, Fox got $6 million and Lovie Smith is at $5 million).

For comparison, the salary structure is almost identical to Steve Spurrier's 5/25 contract with Washington in 2002, but above Nick Saban's with Miami (which ran at $4.5 million/year).

I wonder if Miami's offer was really for the $7-$8 million a year that was reported?

The Dolphins are (reportedly) trying to get Sparano extended.

Good luck on that.

I really wish something factual would come out as to what really happened the last few days. I mean if Miami did come in with a 7-8 million dollar deal, why did Harbaugh say no, and now they're trying to extend the same guy who they were throwing under the bus just by interviewing another guy what that said same guy was still the coach? Also, there was so much talk yesterday about the bad PR that the 49ers were doing because of what York said in the conference that fired Singletary that people were ready to crucify (Figuratively of course) York. This whole thing has been one insane story that it would be nice to get some clarity as to what really happened.

Local paper (The Kansas City Star) ran a special section today on the Chiefs' playoff game. Included in this section was the paper's "fantasy" bracket for how the Post-Season will go.

(They also had a "real" bracket which ends with Atlanta and New England going to the Super Bowl, with NE wining.)

What the fuck, I'll go with this "fantasy bracket" too because I'm a Chiefs fan, dammit!
