Worst TNG episodes ever

I always get a kick out of these threads. It is always interesting to see what some consider 'bad TNG'.

aren't people allowed their own opinions? lol...

Devil's Due is obviously meant to be a light-hearted and comedy episode, but IMO it's way too silly and goofy to hold water.

I too am always shocked at what TNG eps people hated. I liked "Emergence" up to the end, where they let off some isolinear lifeform fly out with no real apprehension, nor repercussions. But the rest was good. I loved the Data scenes, like when he's holding the Car trying to run over him :guffaw:

TNG is my favorite series in all Trekdom and yet holds possibly my least favorite episode in all Trekdom - "Force of Nature". I'd toss whole series in Q's penalty box and then put Tasha in it before I'd sacrifice even an episode of TNG, but my God if this one doesn't test my love for the series. ...If it doesn't make me think maybe I was wrong to be a geek in the first place and shouldn't have played sports and gone into business instead. It's TNG at it's utter worst IMO.

Surely still better than Spock's Brain though?! :techman:

.

As far as clip shows go I actually like this one.

I'm going to add the 1st season PoS when Wesley and the other children get kidnapped to the list. So bad.

Shades of Gray - I'm with you. Not half as bad as its rep.

When the Bough Breaks on the other hand, falls into the so-bad-its-good category. A plot recycled from TOS and slightly annoying kids but its a guilty pleasure for me.

Love the score too.

I hated "The Mask"... and, sorry, all the Klingon episodes from season 5 upwards, culminating in "Birthrigt" and "Rightful Heir" didn't do much for me either.

There's a big difference between saying "episodes I dislike for personal reasons" (aka "code of honor" for alleged racism or "genesis" because of it's lousy science) and episodes that were just awful due to the story or acting, or things like that.

really "shades of gray" is probably the worst of TNG for having the laziest writing of any episode. There are episodes with bad messages or bad acting, but this mess barely qualifies as an "episode" at all.

There are a lot of boring, pointless episodes that I'm surprised are never mentioned in threads like these: "We'll Always Have Paris" and "Time Squared" are two that jump out at me.

My least favorite TNG episode is, at the moment, "Transfigurations." It's another one that's not a popular choice, but it just doesn't really do much for me. I'll rewatch "Sub Rosa" over that one any day, and I actually like "Devil's Due," mostly because Patrick Stewart appears to be having such a good time with it.

'The Quality of life' is an episode that I can't seem to sit through. It's not that bad an episode but I just can't seem to watch it without getting insanely bored

Sub Rosa
Code of Honor
Rascals
I, Borg
Measure of a Man
The Nth Degree
New Ground
Second Chances
Homeward

TNG didn't have too many bad episodes. A lot that people don't like I actually enjoy--Rascals, Genesis, Imaginary Friend, Disaster, The Game, Shades of Gray, Qpid, Menage a Troi, The Loss. And "Sub Rosa" has grown on me over the years--it isn't good but the Irish gothic romance novel atmosphere is appealing.

Ones I didn't care for were Emergence, Masks, Cost of Living(but even it had its moments), Eye of the Beholder(interesting episode until the big reveal it happened in Troi's head), Birthright just a boring and pointless two parter, Rightful Heir, Times Arrow II was a disappointing wrap up that wrapped up too quickly and barely mined the story potential, Firstborn, Force of Nature, Bloodlines.

"Samaritan Snare" - if everyone on the Enterprise isn't stupid the story doesn't happen, and the heart operation subplot is completely arbitrary in execution.

The Royale is just ridiculous, Samaritan Snare makes no sense on any level and Masks is a painful experience.

That said, I don't think it gets any worse than Shades of Gray. At least the other bad episodes were episodes, with plots, acting, direction etc. I'm not sure this one actually qualifies as TV.

Eh?

Guess I should explain myself...

For me, Measure of a Man created long standing issues in the Trek Universe because of its 'all or nothing' plot (much like I, Borg). Data was either going to be 'killed' or found sentient with the rights of sentient beings and if this episode stood alone it would've been fine. But because it's popular its' themes were re-addressed in Voyager to far less entertaining results. It makes my worst TNG episodes list precisely because the writers and producers didn't really think through the long term ramifications of the story. YMMV.

I hate almost any length of film that features Mrs. Troi, but Man Hunt is easily the worst of the lot. Also,

Angel One: crap.

The Outrageous Okana: crap

Imaginary Friend: crap

Realm of Fear: crap

Attached, if for no other reason than the name of the planet. It's ruled by the Kes and the Prit so let's call it Kesprytt. Seriously? A planet called Kesprytt 3 got the name for that reason? It's not the name of the star? What about Kesprytts 1 & 2. Or 4 and more? Jeezus. Pulled me right out of the story for the rest of the episode. All 39 additional minutes.

Elementary Dear Data: the holodeck should have been shut down the second time it fucked up.

Loud as a Whisper: ugh...the Chorus...

^ My favourite bit of Loud as a whisper is either the chorus getting killed, or when Picard grabs the deaf man and yells 'Listen to me!!' as if it will help

I love how all three lean back and freeze frame with terrified looks on their faces as the beam disintegrates them. It's both horrifying and laughably phony at the same time.

or when Picard grabs the deaf man and yells 'Listen to me!!' as if it will help

That's hysterical, especially when there's no excuse as the actor himself is deaf.

"Samaritan Snare" - if everyone on the Enterprise isn't stupid the story doesn't happen, and the heart operation subplot is completely arbitrary in execution.

Yes, but the scene where Wesley and Picard talk over snacks puts me in the mood for little corner sandwiches on white bread.

I'm not sure if it's fair to judge an episode because of something that would be done 10+ years later though. It seems almost disingenuous.

As for my worst episodes, I actually like episodes that seem to be mostly disliked amongst fans: Emergence, Masks, and some others. For me, my least favorite episode of the series is probably New Ground. It was just really really boring and I dislike the character of Alexander.

I used to dislike Cost of Living, but then I heard the story behind it about Mrs. Roddenberry allowing some of her grief for Gene into the episode and I was a bit touched. I hadn't put the two together (And the episode came out close to Gene's death) before and while it's still not a favorite, it does get a bit of a pass now.
