Nook vs. Kindle - which one's better?

Can someone give me the skinny on these things? What's the difference? Which one's better? I have a B&N membership so I could use that on top of any coupons they might have going. But is the Kindle a better buy?

Thanks in advance :)

This thread in Science & Technology might help.

I'll also note that (at least the last few) email coupons I've received from B&N (for a recent example, a 40% off coupon on "new reads" sent yesterday) state "Coupon not valid on NOOKBooks."

I don't own both of them so I guess you could say I can't make a completely fair comparison, but I have been doing research on them lately and here's the basic conclusions I've come to. First off, forget the Nook Color, as it is way overpriced and you will really only get your money's worth if you plan to use the thing to surf the web quite often (in which case I'd recommend a smart phone or an iPad instead). It also uses LCD, not e-ink technology. If price is no concern to you then feel free though.

The Kindle accepts less file types than the Nook, although there are programs you can download that will convert them for you. If you are fine with mainly purchasing your books through Amazon, then this wouldn't be an issue for you. I would look at the list of which file types are supported for each because if you care about something like Word documents, for example, they are supported only by the Kindle. So make sure you look into that. The Nook has an interesting feature where you can go into a physical store and read any book for free for an hour...though in that case, why wouldn't you just pick up the actual book and read for as long as you want? I'm not sure. Anyway, the Nook allows for lending books to someone for two weeks, and the Kindle is coming out with this shortly.

From what I've read of reviews of both items, people seem to like the functionality of the Kindle a little more. The way the pages turn, the button placements, things like that. It seems like the Kindle also has a longer battery life (if you have Wifi set to off), lasting up to a month versus Nook's ten days. If it were me choosing, I'd go with the cheaper Kindle model (since I don't see myself using the 3G connection much).

What I've also noticed is that the majority of people are quite happy with the choice they made in their reviews. That tells me that both products are great, they are around the same price, offer about the same features, and provide a solid service. So really, while the Kindle is my suggestion, you'd probably be happy with either of them.

I think what it comes down to:

Nook is slightly more versatile.

Kindle has a slightly better build quality.

I only briefly tried the Nook in a bookstore and was totally put off by it. I think I should have spent more time with it. My husband bought a Kindle, to my dismay, but I promised him I'd give it a shot. I love it (especially with the case we have) and I have zero complaints. That's about all I have to add. :P

I've played around with both the Nook and the Kindle but I prefer the Kindle, which is good since I got one for Christmas.

Thanks so much guys!! I appreciate it. So it looks like Kindle is the better buy. Spot's Meow (loved that cat), I was leaning toward plain Nook (not NookColor), so thank you for confirming it. I went to the B&N store during christmas and played with both of them and didn't see much of a difference betw the two. I guess I need to find someone who has a Kindle so I can play around with it for a few mins to see what it's like.

Really? Oh no. Gotta read that fine print! Thanks for the heads up :)

Thanks also for the rec on the other thread. Looks good.

I'm a Nook owner and I personally love it. I chose it over the Kindle for two reasons: I like the navigation LCD screen at the bottom and it's pdf compatible. I read a lot of scripts and it's easy to just drop the pdf script on the Nook.

So...

I believe the newest versions of the Kindle also support PDF.

I've heard that too. Just explaining why I went the way I went...

It does indeed.

I got one for X-mas and while I probably wouldn't have bought one myself (I would have more likely gone for the flash bang of an iPad) and I've been very impressed with the Kindle. That said I'm in Australia so the Nook was never really an option.

If I read a lot of scripts, I'd get a Kindle DX, no question. I've read part of a script on my new Kindle 3 on both the vertical and horizontal orientation, and while it's loads better than a backlit monitor, a bigger screen would definitely help.

Beat me to it. Love my PRS-600 (touch screen), and my 500 before that.

To the OP, happy shopping and reading. I was a little skeptical when I was given my first e-reader a few years ago, as I love books; holding them, carrying the, smelling them, collecting them. But, my little Sony won my heart, for many reasons, but primarily the sheer convenience of being able to have so many books and documents (often work, unfortunately), not to mention music and audio books, all in one small package. Great for travel.

I got my wife a Nook for Christmas, and she loves it. I had many reasons for the purchase, but the main two were that the Nook uses a standard format for the e-books (Kindle's is proprietary), and that we don't use Amazon.

I'm in the same boat as you. I love the physical act of reading. But I'm a bit frustrated because of the sheer mountains of books I've acquired over my life and quite a bit intrigued at the idea of reading anything and everything whenever and wherever I feel like it. I like the idea of the convenience of it, I guess.

Could you (or any other Sony Reader enthusiast) expand on these products a bit? I'm a non-techie, so please be as expansive as you'd like ;)

Yeah, maybe. I like the size right now, size of a trade paperback, easily packed, etc.
