^Cool, hopefully A Touch of Fever will be successful enough that you'll get to use them.

    Me, too!

The trickiest part was finding a famous historical person that the tv show didn't already have plans for. They were usually way ahead of me.

For instance, my first outline began with Pete and Myka hunting for Lizzie Borden's axe. Then the tv people told me about what was going to happen in the season finale . . . .

Oops! Back to the drawing board! :)

Wasn't a Flag Full of Stars also a sequel to Star Trek 6 or was that a prequel?

A Flag Full of Stars was one of the "Lost Years" books set between TOS and the first movie.

Though I'm not entirely sure what that has to do with this thread...

It was neither. It was published nine months before ST 6 came out, and that was after extensive delays and rewrites. So it couldn't possibly have had any connection to ST6.

"A Flag Full of Stars" involves Will Decker, an unexpected mission for the newly-reconfigured saucer of the pre-TMP Enterprise, and the Enterprise prototype NASA space shuttle. No connection with ST VI.

Related stories to ST VI (Memory Beta):

    • The Fearful Summons (TOS novel) - "A stunning sequel to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country by one of the writers of the film."
    • Cloak (TOS novel) - The novel Cloak establishes Admiral Cartwright as a Section 31 agent and subsequently implicates Section 31 in the Khitomer conspiracy.
    • Assignment: Eternity (TOS novel) - This novel's prologue and epilogue feature the Khitomer Conference.
    • TOS video game: Klingon Academy - This game explains many things, such as why Chang likes William Shakespeare and why he was part of the conspiracy. It also explains why the explosion of Praxis was devastating to the Klingons and it shows how Gorkon became Chancellor.
    • Sarek (TOS novel) - This novel discusses the Romulans present at the Khitomer Conference.

Thanks Ian. I knew I got the book title wrong. It was written if I remember by Denny Martin Flynn. I mixed up those two titles for some reason.

Which I guess means I need to rephrase my previous question of: If Fearful Summons is a sequel to Undiscovered Country and Cast No Shadow is supposedly also a sequel to Undiscovered Country does this mean that Shadow is expanding on Summons or covering what Summons did not?

I think it's just duplicated marketing hype. They aren't set anywhere near each other. I doubt they're anymore related than "Shadows on the Sun," "The Last Roundup," and "The Ashes of Eden" were.

The Fearful Summons wasn't really a sequel to TUC in any meaningful sense, it was just a book that was set shortly after TUC. It was just billed as a sequel because Flinn was the author, and because it recycled some unused script material from the beginning of TUC (a sequence in which Kirk gathers the scattered crew for a mission).

Cast No Shadow, on the other hand, is a sequel in the more meaningful sense, in that it directly follows up on a story thread from TUC; but it's set 7 years later, in 2300. So there's no reason to expect any kind of overlap.

Man, the Drex covers (even the rejected ones,) for Vanguard are awesome...some of the best stuff out there. IMHO.

Yeah, it's almost like he's talking about a book he wrote! Oh, wait a moment... :vulcan:

Seriously, though - I never really thought of Cast No Shadow in terms of being a sequel to anything, but I guess it is in some ways. During the writing it felt more like a Lost Era story, a "missing chapter" kinda thing. It doesn't expand upon on or draw from The Fearful Summons.

What you have in Cast... is a scenario unfolding seven years after the events of The Undiscovered Country that grows out of the aftermath of the Khitomer Accords. Valeris and a young Elias Vaughn are drawn into a dangerous situation, and both of them find themselves at crossroads in their lives, forced to evaluate their choices and deal with the threat at hand. There are also some flashbacks in there, too.

^Sorry, didn't mean to speak for you, James. I just meant that, judging from the description, it apparently involves Valeris and the aftermath of her actions in the film. So it's certainly more of a sequel than Fearful Summons is, at least.

And 2300 is indeed part of the Lost Era, even if the book isn't labeled that way.

    James,

How does Vaughn fit into the plot if it's a sequel to a movie where he never appeared in?

Also, did you have to re watch the film before writing this?

It's not a sequel to The Undiscovered Country. It's a new story that takes place seven years after the events of the film. And Vaughn fits in to it very well.

Of course. Valeris plays a huge role in Cast No Shadow, so naturally I studied the one movie she appears in. I also chased down all her appearances in the comics and novels (not that there are many).

How did Chekov fit into ST II if he never appeared in "Space Seed"?
