Who are the members of the Federation?

You'd think they'd make more of an attempt to bring other races into the series as serving crew members.

They did. Every time the budget permitted. See the rec deck scene of ST:TMP.

Any time you add a alien crewmember, you add $$$$$$$ to the budget, and hours in the makeup chair for some hapless actor or extra. And if they are going to get closeups or dialogue, the makeup has to be either less elaborate or more complicated.

The novelists make up for this, as they have no budget for casting. The first Pocket original novel, "The Entropy Effect", added numerous new alien crewmembers and "The Wounded Sky" added a whole lot more. "My Enemy, My Ally" added a semi-regular Horta crewmember. The various comic publishers did this type of stuff, too.

^no way! Men are oppressed plus the E-D had no info on them that was less than 20 yes old plus the plot wouldn't have happened if they were UFP members.

Yup. And the new Titan series features a starship purposefully staffed with the most diverse crew in the fleet, with less than 15% of the members being human. They've got a velociraptor that likes to eat live prey as a Chief Medical officer, not exactly something that would be cheap to portray on TV every week.

Y'know something that always bothered me?

The fact that the Federation had so many member planets, yet Starfleet was always human dominated. You'd think they'd make more of an attempt to bring other races into the series as serving crew members.

I always assumed that this was an illusion created by two things:

1. Many species resemble Humans when seen from a distance.

2. We've only gotten a good look at four Federation Starfleet crews out of a Starfleet with hundreds of ships and starbases. As a result, we've never gotten an accurate overview of what most of Starfleet is like.

I put together a list of Federation Members based upon the canon and the novels and made a thread about it two years ago.
