including the dress white uniforms with gold mylar shoulder boards (which may have been glancingly inspired by Star Trek but don't really resemble it).
They were inspired by Doctor Who.

The officer uniforms did remind me of "Star Trek: The Love Boat Generation".

Maybe I too easily accept the rationale that since this is based on time travel, it's difficult to always apply standard logic, so it's alright to play loosely as long as it's entertaining. Granted, it can be all too easy to accept that rationale. A writer shouldn't just go off in whatever direction they choose, pulling random elements out of whatever orifice of their choosing. But then neither should they be slaves to tieing down each and every aspect of a story with orderly explanations of every detail.

Well, after all, it was Steven Moffat who invented the "timey wimey, wibbly wobbly" explanation. So I'm not too hung up on the details of time travel in this story.

I enjoyed it. There were a lot of fun bits, especially with the Star Trek homage, Doctor's initial visit to Scrooge via the chimney, jumping into the filmstrip, everything with the shark, and Marilyn Monroe.

On the other hand, I found the love story completely unconvincing. On the day that Scrooge shows up as a dweeby teenager, Katherine Jenkins suddenly falls in love with him? Did she even have any defining aspects to her personality?

So, it's pretty clear that the Doctor liked hanging out with Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. He had a photo at the beginning of the episode of Frank and Santa Claus, and later on he took Abigail and Kazran on another visit to Frank (that led to the Doctor's quickie marriage to Marilyn Monroe). Now I wonder if the Doctor was there when Frank Sinatra had his throwdown with Harlan Ellison... :)

Now I wonder if "A Christmas Carol" gets Doctor Who inside Tommy Westphall's snowglobe...

The love story didn't bother me at all. He was her gateway to a life that wasn't drab, and after a lifetime of drab, she had six straight days of light and life and fun and adventure. How could she not respond to that? I bought the love story, though I thought that Abigail was more in love with the excitement of running off and having adventures with the Doctor and Kazran than she was necessarily with Kazran himself.

I've not read the rest of the thread, but I thought it was pretty poor. Some half-baked ideas and completely unengaging. I even managed to find Smudger a bit irritating, and the preview of the next series didn't do much for me either. Pfffff, Doctor Who.

I liked the Christmas special although it wasn't as good as last years. One thing that spoiled it was the CGI shark was obviously so much larger than the rubber one they used in close ups. It was nice to see Amy in her policewoman uniform again (although the 'Policewoman and the Centurion' is a new sex game on me) but couldn't she go the whole Benny Hill, lose the body armour and put on some high heels?
Kinda love Rory as the Centurion though, so cool that he spent all those years watching over his beloved as she was trapped in the Pandorica, becoming a legendary, mythical figure through the ages, like he's the Wandering Jew or something.
All told it was pretty good but I'm much more looking forward to the new series, the Dr in a stetson (for the first time since the First Doctor story The Gunfighters)

Yeah, I thought we could have had a better discussion than we did, but those are the breaks.

Hey, you're talking about the show itself? Not the thread?

Did we see the same show? I thought it was great. "Smudger" I guess is Matt Smith(?), who continues to impress me. Why "Smudger?"

The preview stuff was great--I loved the Stetson. I could have done without the Nazis, but at least they're not Space Lizard Alien Nazis. I'm looking forward to the season, but I'm not expecting it to change my life--just to be 13 hours of entertainment.

Smudger's a nickname often given to people with the name Smith. Or at least it was about 50 years ago.

Anyone remember that first Christmas special when they brought back Only Fools and Horses? I suppose it's apt really, Rory is pretty much just Rodney.

oh well see you next season and christmas special...and the few after that :)

One day we will return to slow pacing and tin foil hats we just need the nuclear war first to set mankind backwards.

do you mean the Event? will Doctor Who follow "The Quiz Broadcast"?

^The "Paris" comment is actually kind of interesting, since that was the last really high-profile overseas location they used (in 1979's "City of Death")

An historically inaccurate shot in front of the Statue of Liberty doesn't count.
In that case, none of the main cast were there.

I suspect the second unit filming at the Statue of Liberty amounted to two or three people with a digital camcorder looking like tourists, avoiding the need for a permit. :)

Martha and the Doctor at the base of the Statue of Liberty was filmed back in Wales.
