NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

^ It's not exactly a secret that the Vikings don't want to play in the Metrodome anymore. Their lease there runs out after next season, and they said they don't want to renew it.

Mark my words, if Minnesota doesn't build the Vikings a new stadium, they WILL move to Los Angeles. Not only because the Metrodome sucks, but the Vikings have been threatened that if they don't extend their lease there, they'll once again start having to pay $4 million rent every year. You think they'll fall for that shit? :guffaw:

The Vikes are in an untenable situation in the dome. The Twins got a stadium, the Gophers got a stadium, and the Vikings are left out in the proverbial cold. (Not actual cold since it's a dome.)

From what I've read, the idea of building a stadium in LA is predicated on them having a team lined up ready to move in when it is built. The likeliest candidates are the Vikings, Bills, Chargers, or possibly Raiders. I wonder if the Vikings would go through a whole re-brand if they moved. The Lakers moved from Minneapolis way back when and kept their identity.

Somehow the mere idea of the Vikings playing in the sunny climes of LA seems anathema to me. So much of their identity is wrapped up in that "frozen north" atmosphere, regardless of whether they've been playing in The Baggie for a couple of decades.

Maybe it's my age (which would be odd considering I'm in my mid-30's), but I've NEVER thought of the Vikings as being an outdoor team the way I do teams like the Pack, the Bears or the Patriots. The Vikings have always been a wussy dome team to me.

The Vikings already have the same color scheme for their uniforms as the Lakers, so why not? :lol:

And where the hell from does LA have the money to build a new billion dollar stadium suddenly? I guess the whole concept of just moving a team across the country, especially one as well established as the Vikings is crazy to me.

Happens a few times a decade in these parts.

Montreal Expos -> Washington Nationals
Vancouver Grizzlies -> Memphis Grizzlies
LA Rams -> St. Louis Rams
Oakland Raiders -> LA Raiders -> Oakland Raider
Charlotte Hornets -> New Orleans Hornets -> ???
Seattle Supersonics -> OKC Thunder
Cleveland Browns -> Baltimore Ravens

It happens from time to time. I believe the LA stadium would be funded by private developers rather than taxpayers. Don't know why LA needs a team at this point though.

I grew up in the era when "frozen tundra" was coined, albeit for the Green Bay Packers. But the classic footage of NFL games from that era and later so often showed the Vikings. Of course, much was during those fours losses in the Super Bowl. But in my mind when I hear "Vikings" I see Jim Marshall, Ron Yary, Chuck Foreman and more running over people and puffing out little clouds of breath. Yeah they did turn into a "wussy dome team", but I hate the loss of that outdoor setting, where the cold came into consideration for game prep.

The L.A. Stadium will be entirely privately financed.

Baseball-wise, where do you think the Dodgers and Giants came from? They moved to CA for the same reason the Vikings will: They were playing in old junk heaps, and their host city (New York in their case) wouldn't build them new parks.

As for the Raiders, I say let them keep the damn Oakland Coliseum. The A's are on their way out, and it's the Raiders' fault that the Coliseum is so awful now (i.e. Mount Davis - the ass-ugly grandstand that the Raiders made them build before moving back in). So the Raiders can stew in it for all I care. I suppose they could share one of the new stadia - either the one in L.A. or the 49ers' new stadium. Probably the L.A. Stadium would be best, for obvious reasons. :lol:

I don't know if the NFL would be happy with a Vikings move. There's just so much history tied to the rivalries in that division. And LA has had such crappy luck holding onto football teams.

Talks of Cowher coming to the Texans on the radio......

They only have a potential 2 wins left out of the season which would be 7/9 I doubt they'll get that.

How is the NFL fixture set up? I guess as you have stacks of teams they are carved up into divisions and then the top teams in each division get to play in the finals leading to the superbowl - ?

Two conferences, four divisions in each. Each division winner, plus two other "wild card" teams in each conference make the playoffs (so six in each conference).

To illustrate, Philadelphia and New York are in the same division (The NFC East) and they're both 9-4 right now. One will be the division winner. The other has a shot at the Wild Card, but they have to be worried about every other team in the same conference (New Orleans is 10-3 and Green Bay is 8-5). So two of those three will make it, but it's hard to say who just yet.

EDIT: Tampa Bay is also 8-5. So there are four teams who are hoping for that Wild Card spot (Tampa Bay, New Orleans, and Atlanta are in the same division and will be fighting for the division championship too).
