MLB Offseason 2010-11

Amazing rotation...somebody called it R2C2. (Roy-Roy-Cole-Cliff).

 I hope that sticks :D

And, yeah, we could really use another righty hitter. That's definitely our biggest weakness (and the bench) in the upcoming season.

I'm not angry. Yet. I would have of course preferred to have the Yankees sign Lee, but it's a long offseason yet to go.

I just hope that Pettitte can be persuaded to return. Lord knows they need the starting pitching.

Honestly, I'm glad Lee went anywhere but NY.

The Yankees are an ongoing example of why MLB needs a salary cap.

I can't really complain about the Yankees' spending, being a Red Sox fan (especially after this offseason!), but I'm also very happy that Lee didn't end up with the Yankees. I really thought it was a foregone conclusion that he'd be in pinstripes next year.

As for Pettitte, the only way I see him coming back now is if the Yankees throw buckets of money at him. I think if they'd signed Lee, Pettitte would have been more inclined to come back for one more year.

So who are the Yankees gonna throw $20 million a year at in desperation and destroy the market even more than the Nationals have? Ben Sheets? Kevin Millwood? Jeremy Bonderman? Jeff Francis?

So apparently Lee signed for 5 years/$115 million, with a vesting option for a sixth year. Meanwhile, the Rangers and Yankees both offered 6 years/$138 million, with the Yankees including an option for a seventh year that would have brought the total to $154 million, and the Rangers also adding a seventh year option that could have gotten Lee $161 million.

I guess he really liked pitching in Philadelphia.

I love how the Media is already proclaiming a Phillies/Red Sox world series. That's pretty much what happens every year at this time right?

Fine, so Philly got Cliff Lee. Big Deal. Time to show it on the field and the Giants are the raining MLB Champs. I'm not saying they're going to repeat, I'm just saying anything is possible and just because you sign a big name pitcher, it doesn't mean a damn thing until the season starts and then it's anybody's guess.

All fair points. Dumb luck and injuries play as big a role as anything else, as this year's Red Sox could attest.

Phillies/Red Sox seems as good a guess as anything right now, though. Pitching rotations good pretty darn formidible, lineups are great, etc. Anything could happen, but seems like a decent guess. Can't win on paper, though, so gotta play the games out.

Giants have the pitching to make a good run again, but not sure their lineup repeats what they did last year. Who knows?

This time of year, the media loves whoever signed the last big free agent, though, and it changes weekly.

Oh you're the defending champs, that's fine. No one should say otherwise. It's like the year after the Phillies won. I think people were expecting a Mets comeback and a half dozen other things. Phillies really weren't given that much credit, after all, they beat the Rays. Now the Rays are actually considered a solid team and the Phils are often considered the favorites. But this is just on paper. The Giants are the current champions and it does no good to pretend otherwise.

I'm not trying to be snobby about the whole thing. It's just all throughout the postseason the Media has almost ignored the Giants as World Champions. It's almost as if they are still the blip on the radar and what pisses me off the most is the proclimations that because big named pitchers and players are being snatched up by the "Big rating" teams, they're going to the World Series. Hell, it's almost as if we all know the Giants are world champions, but those who report on the sport do not.

However, the Giants haven't done anything so there isn't much to report, but still proclaiming those teams to win the world series is outright crazy.

I wasn't saying you were being snobby. I was just pointing out the media did the same thing to the Phillies right after they won the series. It's how the national sports media works whenever any team that isn't established wins.

It's still a bit weird having Philly-as-contender taken for granted. Outside of Philadelphia I don't think a lot of people thought we'd do well in 2008 - all the talk was 'when will Lidge blow his first save?' and after we won it was all 'they were lucky they played the Rays'

Phillies offense though. Rollins will get injured and we lost Werth.

Yeah, but they'll really be happy to not have to deal with the Werth contract in 2016 or so.

The offseason isn't over yet. I'm waiting to see if they can get another right-handed hitter. If they do, I'll feel much better. I think Brown will be a solid bench player (once he figures out how to cut down on strikeouts). Rollins staying healthy may be key, though. But we're also poised to win on pitching instead of hitting (which is basically the same as last season, really).

Man, I still can't get over Halladay / Lee / Oswalt / Hamels. That isn't a rotation so much as it is an execution squad.

Lee stone-cold walked away from 7 / 150. Is Ruben Amaro a wizard with a once-every-six-months "Acquire Ace" ability? That's the only explanation I can think of for how he manages to fall ass-backwards into these incredible miracles.
