Don't feel bad.. A lot of people make that mistake. There are also a lot of people who call "Livin' in the USA" "Space Cowboy," as the lyrics are in that song too. As an old DJ, I used to take that request a bunch.

I look at these lists as almost a "jumping the shark" moment.. Stairway, for most casual fans, was the pinnacle of Zepplin's success. Same thing for "Smells like Teen Spirit," and many of the other songs mentioned here..

"Tom Sawyer" is argueably Rush's most known song as well as most popular. Most devoted fans love the song, but I would venture a guess that we skip over it a lot on the ol' Ipod.

Same with Marillion's "Kayliegh".. As true blue Marillion fan, I love the song, but I cringe when people say it's the only song people remember.

As for other Canadian rockers, let us not forget Glass Tiger.. Great band that should have been known for more than just "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone"... Just sayin'....

God I hate Hotel California, but yeah, it probably is their Stairway.

John Waite's would be Missing You, and he's milking it. A few years ago he did a country duet version with Alyson Krauss. It was actually pretty good.
Waite did a corporate gig for us at a conference several years ago and I was impressed with him, he has a lot of good stuff. Too bad he's been a perennial c-lister.

Yeah, don't get me even started on that. I know someone who's only Nirvana song is a song called "Half the Man." For those who can figure this out, or have encountered this before, that's wrong on so many levels.

^ They mistook Creep by STP for a Nirvana song?

I seem to remember that being mislabelled on Napster back in the day. And Weiland does sound a bit like Cobain on it.

And apparently it's still a common misconception.

Yeah. I'm amazed I learned the proper names\artists of any songs at all when I was 13. The number of terrible parodies attributed to "Weird Al" alone...

I know that Glass Tiger song. I also remember a remake they did of a (Tommy James? The Hollies?) song called "Carousel" that I loved at the time... I always wanted to hear more by them, but, well, I'm an American from AZ so -no dice.

You're both forgetting that, several years before "The Joker" (and the album of the same name on which it appeared,) there was also a song called "Space Cowboy" which regularly shows up on Steve Miller Band anthologies and can still be heard on a lot of classic-rock channels. While that may not have been the song Canadave had in mind, he's covered all the same. ;)

Hah, speaking of mislabeling, it's rather annoying when you're a fan of a band and know the song titles and keep seeing these misconceptions all over the place due to those Napster days. It's like nobody can let them go! Like a bad urban legend that keeps cropping up. One such is Great Big Sea, and how everyone seems to think that they sang Home for A Rest by Spirit of the West, when in actuality, they never did, yet that song is labeled as a Great Big Sea song. It's rather annoying as people just assume it is what it is.

Great Big Sea's Stairway would be Ordinary Day.

What's the deal Canadians? No Triumph fans here? Rik Emmett was a guitar god with real talent who could play an acoustic like it was nobody's business. I wonder whatever happened to him?

Steve Miller doesn't have a stairway. He has a whole album full of them. His "Greatest Hits" album, which was probably his best seller for my generation. I saw him in concert for his "Born To Be Blue" (I think that was the name) tour in late 80's. Audience went ape shit anytime a song from "Greatest Hits" was played. People singing, dancing, etc....anytime something new played? Crickets. Kinda sad really.

"Story Of My Life" is Social Distortion's "Stairway".....though sometimes I feel like it's "Ball And Chain".

Good question. I don't know. Triumph was before my time and you really don't hear much about them anymore and even then they might of been more of a local flavour from where they came from.

    Wonderfull Tonight as well...

"Walk Like An Egyptian" would be The Bangles Stairway...
And for the B52's it would be "Love Shack"...

I'm not a Canadian, but Rik's still around. He's had a moderately successful solo career since leaving Triumph in 1988. There appear to have been some recent rumblings about the band reuniting to do some shows, but I'm not sure what the details are.

"Fight the Good Fight" would probably be Triumph's "Stairway" - that's the only one of theirs I ever hear on the radio anymore.

Mistral, I'm an American from New Mexico, so that's no excuse. :) I think I have all of Glass Tiger's releases that made it to the states... I know there was a greatest hits that came out long ago as well.

As for Canadian rock in general, I'm a big fan of everything from Triumph, April Wine and Saga to Great Big Sea, although I don't know if you can call GBS purely "rock"... Great Big Sea's last couple of CD's have been damn good and I loved seeing them when they came to ABQ in concert. Had a drink with Alan after the show. Nice guy!

As for Triumph's "Stairway" I think there might be some disagreement. "Magic Power" was certainly the biggest "hit" IIRC, but "Never Surrender" and "Hold On" are certainly still mainstays on AOR radio around here. Thunder Seven was my first love when it came to Triumph.. Such a fantastic album.

I just saw GBS last week, myself. I must've seen them at least half-a-dozen times, and they're always a ton of fun.

I would if I could, but New Mexico is not really a hot bed for their fan base. Was a small but VERY vocal crowd when they came through town.

Yeah, GBS's a great band. I hadn't liked the past two albums they put out, but I really like their latest one, which feels more creative. I more or less categorize them as Celtic Folk Rock, but they're hard to categorize. I actually preferred them when they were purely acoustic. I've seen them 3 times, but they don't play very often here. Last time they did was last year and we're not on this year's schedule, and before that they hadn't played here since 2006.
