FAST-food giant KFC has sparked outrage from health experts by offering Christmas gift cards worth up to $500 as the nation battles an obesity crisis.

KFC outlets have been promoting the cards, ranging in value from $10 to $500 and to be used within 12 months, as a "thoughtful gift idea for any occasion''.

A $500 card could purchase a fat banquet of 14 buckets of "Original Recipe'' chicken pieces, containing 4.5kg of fat and 1.8kg of saturated fat; 63 maxi serves of "Popcorn Chicken'' (2.8kg of fat and 1.25kg saturated fat) or 78 "Original Works Burgers'' (1.6kg fat, 592g saturated fat).

The "tasty new gift idea'' has attracted outrage and disbelief from health experts in Queensland struggling to combat a growing obesity epidemic.
About 55 per cent of adult Queenslanders, and about a quarter of children aged five to 17, are considered obese or overweight.​

So I am asking people how they would feel about getting a KFC gift card (or one from any other fast food outlet).

They obviously did some sort of market analysis to determine that some freaks would buy a $500 gift card for KFC otherwise there would be no point in putting it out there. All sorts of places have gift cards, it's a big money maker because they know something like 40% will never get used and that's essentally free money to the company.
I wouldn't want a fast food gift card of any kind. Yes, I eat at fast food places more often then I should, but the idea of someone giving me a gift card for a place like that is a little insulting. The exception would be Starbucks, or some other coffee shop. Coffee is always welcome!

I'm trying to think of when I would give a fast food gift card and can't come up with a single instance. Certainly not for any adult I know, and I'd feel guilty giving that to a kid just because of the nutritional value.

If I ate regularly at KFC, I'd love one of their gift cards. What's the big deal? If people are unhappy with their size, they don't have to go there. If they get a gift card and don't want it, just give it to someone else.

I probably wouldn't mind receiving a Subway card as a gift. Subway is the only fast food place I go to.

I can't see me giving such a card as a present to anyone but I am not fond of giving gift cards at all. Maybe if someone asked for it I would.

I love Subway. I go there at least twice a week. They know my order now.

As for gift cards, they're the ONLY thing I ever give people. Unless they tell me exactly what they want, they're getting a gift card. Why not? Why should I waste perfectly good money on something they may not even want?

We're the same way with my family. We've all received too much crap over the years that just ends up in a box in the basement, in the trash, or at Goodwill. Gift cards or cash is the best way to go. I do about 90% of my Christmas shopping on line now. I hate the stores.

Subway is awesome, I had a veggie delight for lunch today.

At least here in the U.S., KFC offers grilled chicken besides fried. It's a very good seller for them. Does grilled chicken add to the obesity crisis? If so, then what is good for us?

Now, would I want a KFC gift card? No. I don't want any gift cards. I'll take cash (any time). Just no gift card from anywhere, please.

It might be different in Australia. I had never heard of KFC gift cards before but I haven't been inside a KFC for three or four years.

If you would be fine with a Subway gift certificate because you enjoy eating there, isn't it conceivable that the people giving a KFC gift card would usually only do so because they know the person they're giving it to enjoys KFC? Why is one "ridiculous" and an "insult" while the other isn't? Just because you prefer Subway?

Also, the higher dollar amount cards could be used for people who throw office parties or regularly get food for their coworkers to cover the expense.

Excuse me but I never suggested it was "ridiculous" and an "insult" - those were quotes from the reader's comments attached to the article. That is why I put them in quote boxes. I wanted to see if people here agreed or disagreed with such comments as I thought that they were a little harsh.

I agree with you 100%. If someone gave me a gift card to some fast food joint, yeah i'd totally use it.

If someone who knows that I like Subway gave me a gift card for there, I would greatly appreciate it.

Anyplace else, I'd pass it on to someone else. I wouldn't be insulted, but I'd know that they'd put little thought into the gift, because everyone who knows me knows I don't eat fast food, except for Subway. And pizza.

If anybody gave me something like that I'd struggle to understand why they did.

It wouldn't be any use to me because I never use fast food outlets. Everyone who knows me well enough to buy me gifts would know that it would be incompatible with my diet, and that I enjoy and prefer making my own food.

But even putting that aside, I think it's a poor thing to give anybody as a gift. Gift vouchers make lousy gifts, especially ones that will get filtered into normal everyday expenses, such as the buying of food.

The question is to see if people agree with the some of the comments made on the web site i.e is giving such gift cards insulting. Personally I don't think it is but I wanted to see if other people though like me or thought like the readers making the comments did, as I had no idea before reading that article that anyone would find it insulting.
