Too bad some people have completely ignored the very words that are in the thread title... "invested seasons in."

I'm confused by your comment. Are you assuming "invested" means "buying DVD's", or "invested their time"? The latter is what I took it to mean and responded accordingly.

Time spent watching seasons of the show. Some people here are only listing long-running shows they watched a handful of episodes for.

Lost last season til the finale, Heroes third season, Burn Notice and Brothers & Sisters this season, Stargate Atlantis sometime third season.

The usual suspects I name whenever this thread theme shows up:

ER - went from must-watch (for me) TV to soapish, boring drivel. I stopped watching around the time Alex Kingston jumped / was pushed, but I'd been watching out of habit rather than interest for a while by then.

X-Files - another must-watch show that I stopped watching around season five, when it had disappeared up its own mythos and stopped making anything that vaguely resembled sense.

CSI - just lost interest.

Without a Trace - ditto.

The Simpsons - gave up on this a decade or so ago when the characters started to become utterly stupid / unlikeable / uninteresting / unfunny.

DS9 - ditched this once the Dominion stuff took over everything. Almost every aspect of the show bored me, basically.

Enterprise - couldn't keep watching much past mid-season two or thereabouts. When the only character in a show who's of even slight interest to you is (literally) a dog, it's a sure sign the show isn't for you.

Heroes - I still liked it well enough (even though it never lived up to the promise of that extraordinary first season) but like most SF shows it didn't rate here and was thus shunted into a variety of idiotic timeslots that made keeping up with it a pain in the arse.

There are probably others but they're the ones that spring to mind at the moment.

I started to give up on ER after Mark Greene died, but really stopped watchin' when they killed Romano with a helicopter.

Seconded, except I rarely watched after Greene. Killing Romano was the single dumbest thing the writers ever did.

I gave up sometime before the Romano episode but tuned into an episode at one point just to see what was going on in the show and it happened to be...the episode with the helicopter.

I also bailed on watching The Simpsons regularly but that seems like 10 years ago. I catch South Park occasionally but I watched that regularly for a time as well.

I started watching a couple episodes of the latest season of Weeds and meant to catch up but never went back to it.

Stopped watching NYPD Blue at some point in the Ricky Schroder years.

I don't usually consciously decide to stop watching after a time but usually after a break or something I just forget to come back.

There's about three shows...two I've kind of come back to, the other is a recent drop.

House...I basically watched it out of obligation and nothing else being on on Monday nights especially last season. Frankly...I got really really tired of the Thirteen storyline last season, and it's been nice without her around this season. I've started paying attention a little closer this season again.

Supernatural is a recent drop. I suppose I was just...fed up with the storyline, it's like the 'life altering, big ass troubles' never end and life's stressful enough without it bleeding into my TV shows anymore. Also with the new direction they've taken the characters this season I couldn't really watch it for the characters anymore either, that's what got me through season 5 at least. I may check out season 6 on DVD...if I like what I hear about the second half. I haven't liked what I've heard about the first half. It's kind of sad...cuz I really did like the show, but after that season opener I couldn't stand to watch any more.

The Office...I dropped watching it live the last couple of seasons in favor of Supernatural (ironic since there is no schedule conflict anymore), but now I'm back to watching it, mostly because I wonder what will happen after this season and Steve Carell's leaving. I've mostly kept up with it online, though, so I haven't missed much.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch - It was my guilty pleasure show that no one knew I watched. I made it until season 5 and dropped off, partly because I moved into a shared house at the time and because the show got a bit old.

The Drew Carey Show - Kate leaving at the end of season 7 hurt the show for me and I didn't last long after that.

Spooks - It was the death of Danny that really did it in for me as I liked the original "Spooks". I lasted through season 4 but not even its cliffhanger could get me to continue to season 5.

Spin City - it just wasn't the same after MJ left. Didn't see it out.

Nu Dr Who - The specials the Tenth Doctor went on saw me start to lose interest and then the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond did absolutely nothing for me. One episode was enough of them for me and I moved on to their timeslot competition.

Two Guys and a Girl - Only went for four seasons, not sure if that counts as a long running show. I dropped out in season 3.

Everybody Loves Raymond - is an odd case. I saw a lot of it due to its once high rerun rotation on TV here but I never made an effort to watch its new episodes in its final two years. The same has happened with Two and a Half Men.

Heroes - After season 2 I missed a lot of the start to mid of season 3 due to it competing against shows I wanted to watch more. Saw the tail end of 3 but I was so sick of some of the characters, namely Claire and Peter, that I didn't bother with season 4.

Buffy - is a possible one. I know I use to watch it but I can't remember if I jumped out during season 2 or later. I know I didn't watch it from 2001 onwards for certain.

Cold Feet - Saw three years, lost track of it but did see the final episode.

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys - Watched three years worth and stopped. Can't remember why.

US Shows
I watched around 6 seasons of CSI (Vegas) but it got old and with no end in sight, I didn't see the point in carrying on.

I watched ER from season 5-11 but got bored once again plus the new characters weren't as good as the older ones.

I've not watched the final season of NIP/TUCK yet because the show got boring and seem to jump the shark every week but one day I will watch the final season just to know the ending.

Stopped watching Heroes early into season 4 because it was BORING and the last good season was 2.

I've thought about watching shows like NCIS but they seem to go on forever and I prefer to watch shows with a story with an ending in sight.

UK Shows
Eastenders is full of horrible characters, and its 30 minutes of shouting and annoying peple now.

Emmerdale and Corra have a more laid back charm to them with more likeable characters but there on too often to keep up with plots. However the all week 50th year Corronation Street disaster episodes have been fantastic viewing.

The Bill was ruined by revamps and was cancelled in the end, no loss really though it was fantastic in the 90's.

ER and The X-Files. I'm pretty sure the Romano vs. helicopter episode was the last one I ever watched of ER, and I gave up on X-Files about two episodes after Mulder left and didn't come back until the Series Finale, which I watched out of the same feeling of obligation the OP described.

Stargate SG-1. Can't think of any other show. Either I get sick of bad shows early on, or they're so bad they get cancelled. Or they're shows that I'll stick with despite the badness (Heroes). I even watched The X-Files till the bitter end, although it was on DVD so I was being selective about episodes all the way thru...

Oh, House as well. At first it was really cool, but it was too repetitive and that reality show storyline just dragged on and on.

I gave up on Enterprise in disgust after the space Nazi finale at the end of season 3. I later saw season 4 on DVD and wished the entire run of the show had been handled by Manny Coto. These Are The Voyages is still an awful finale, but Manny didn't really have anything to do with that one.

Our DVR died (yet to be replaced), so we didn't see most of the last season of Monk or the finale. We've yet to see it, so SHHHH if we ever get around to it on DVD, LOL!

See above with Psych, but we may get back into it now that we have On Demand. Didn't really stop liking it, just didn't get back to it.

I invested time watching lost. But it just seemed all too random and that it could never all be tied up plausibly. I was right it was never all tied up plausibly. I did actually start watching them all again online and got back into it. But the last season was shit and the ending made me feel like i had wasted so much time watching the show.

Law & Order, after Jerry Orbach left. It'll never be the same. RIP Detective Briscoe. Las Vegas, after the 2nd season. Just couldn't get into it after that. ER once Romano was gone.

I thought the X-Files had some good moments after Duchovny left. Robert Patrick is a great actor, and it was his presence that kept me interested.

I got to meet Vince Gilligan for a couple of hours in 2003. There were a few of us there with him, and I asked him about the differences between Patrick and Duchovny. I'll never forget when he said to me that "Robert Patrick is ten times the actor and human being that David Duchovny will ever be."

That just struck me as kinda funny.

Heroes: Not sure if it counts as a long-running show, but I watched all the was through to the season 2 premiere and then just stopped.

Smallville: I watched right up until they sorta introduced the Justice League. When they refused to get that right, I dropped it.

24: I watched the first 2 seasons and the season with Alexander Siddig. But I droppped it when I realized everyone at the CTU was too busy being involved in grade school level love triangles to do their F'n jobs.

Star Trek: Voyager: I'm probably going to get some flack for this, but I don't care. I heard this Star Trek show was about a lost ship at the far side of the galaxy having to scrounge supplies and scrape by just to get back to the alpha quadrant I was excited for something new and possibly a little darker than TNG. I watched the first season and was sorely disappointed. The show was simply not the show I was promised. I didn't really identify with any of the characters. I honestly feel that had Voyager been the show they promised, we wouldn't have needed the reboot.

ER - as more and more original characters left the series, I began to lose interest. By the time Dr. Greene died, I was pretty much done. I may have given it one more year after that. I honestly don't remember.

The Simpsons - gave up on that a long time ago. It just isn't funny anymore.

Family Guy - also not as funny as it used to be. I've caught a few of the newer episodes from the last couple of years and it's hit-or-miss.

South Park - yet another animated show that has suffered from uneven quality in recent years.

Heroes - after an amazing first season, I struggled with season 2 and became annoyed with season 3. I couldn't be bothered to even attempt season 4.

Six Feet Under - I remember watching the first couple of seasons when they originally aired on HBO but I found myself losing interest. One day I might start from the beginning and re-watch it on DVD to see if it holds up.

Grey's Anatomy - this is a weird one, because I stopped watching mid-way through season 6 but have since returned to the show. I didn't give up because I didn't like the show anymore. I think I just needed a little break. I'm watching the current season and it's just fine.
