25th Century Excelsior Class Remodel

Lorna

Lieutenant Commander
I'm looking for volunteers with a good design head on their shoulders to design me a 25th century Excelsior class ship. I've always loved the Excelsior class but I think it needs a remake to snazz it up. Before the 25th century even began Starfleet was already making sleek new designs so I would love to see some ideas for a sleek 25th century Excelsior design.

Is anyone interested in the challenge?

Fairly certain this is what a late-24th/early-25th century ship designed to fill the Excelsior's niche would look like.

So are you looking for a 25th century refit Excelsior then? In that case sorry, I thought you were asking "What would the Excelsior look like if it were designed in the 25th century instead of the 23rd?

There used to be a TNG movie era/future Excelsior refit with 3 deflector dishes knocking around, you used to be able to find it on Star Trek Australia, but that sites down again.

Negative: Sovereign was designed to replace Galaxy if anything as the New Heavy Cruiser

Defiant becomes the new Destroyer Class
Intrepid becomes the new Medium Cruiser/ Combat Class
Luna becomes the new Medium Cruiser/ Defender Class
Nova becomes the new Light Cruiser/ Combat Class

To be honest I don't see Sovereign or Prometheus making the new class of Federation design. It will likely be the last time we see them. Their initial designs were so poor for the roles they were supposed to fulfill it's unlikely they'll revisit them with out extensive reconstruction of their abilities.

What do you mean negative? Was not Excelsior designed to replace Constitution as the new Heavy Cruiser? As I read your post, you're agreeing with me, yet obviously you weren't.

ER.. the Sovereign, Galaxy, and Excelsior classes all filled the same role in the fleet at the same time... they were all "Heavy" or "Exploration" cruisers. So an Excelsior for the 'next generation' would indeed already be the Sovereign.

I gathered that the Excelisor phased out the Constitution. I'm guessing there were several classes between the Excelisor and the Ambassador. The Excelisor has different role in the TNG/DS9/VOY era than during the TOS movie era. There will be a time when the Galaxies and Sovereigns are the choice flagship for Admirals, when the Excelisors are long gone.

Tachy's model is an antique, but there's a model for the various Trek games which stays closer to the lines of the refit Excelsiors:

The Chabot Class Refit is my favorite trek ship period. :luvlove:
As is made evident by my TBBS Membership Card. :p

That's the point. The role of the Excelsior was given to the Ambassador, then Galaxy, then Sovereign. So a 24/25th century Excelsior would then be an Sovereign. Just as a late 23rd century Constitution would be an Excelsior.

New ships get the old job.

WHat about the Vesper class from STO, that's 25th century? I think it was described as being at least partly inspired by the Excelsior class.

Yep, I can't disagree with this. It's the offspring of Voyager and Excelsior. It's like a different Enterprise from every angle. The front view is Excelsior.

Didn't John Eaves mention the Excelsior as an influence in designing the Enterprise-E? With the narrower foot print, long nacelles, big impulse engines on the saucer, it sure looks like the spiritual successor of the Excelsior.

Sorry again for the derail. Yes, the Sovereign is the Excelsior of the late 24th century, but the OP wants to see an Excelsior that has survived into the early 25th century and recently been refitted.

In which case it would probably be akin to Tachy's Excelsior B, Chabot Class or Vesper from Star Trek Online.
