I am starting to really warm up to TOS

ST09 will age very quickly because of its thoroughly juvenile approach.

Really?

I hate Star Trek 2009 as much as anyone... but I don't feel the need to bang on it in a positive thread about The Original Series.

This is about celebrating TOS and how it hooked another fan forty years after the fact.
The issue was raised and so I remarked on it. So big deal. TOS is still attracting fans after forty years. I'll be damned surprised if ST09 is still interesting anyone in forty months.

Well, let's not be too hasty. ST09 did very well at the box office and I expect ST11 will as well. The thing is, this will be just a few movies (3 at the most, is my guess). How can that compete with hundreds of hours of material from the "old school" Star Trek?

It's obvious that TOS had a lot of constraints to fight compared with the Star Trek series that followed. But if that was a key issue, it wouldn't have such staying power. And the remastered versions have transcended a number of special effects limitations/mistakes in the originals, giving it an extra boost. I think there's a good chance we'll see more converts coming back to the "old stuff", as time goes on. Nostalgia is a fun feeling, too. :)

I remember watching the corbomite maneuver when I was younger, and being really hooked on it. But every time I would switch the TV on 'the corbomite maneuver' would always be on.
(I probably just missed a couple of episodes and the BBC just cycled back).

I thought that TOS was just this one episode show where all they did was talk to thus christmas tree lights ball and drink with some weird kid. It put me off for quite a while
:guffaw: Funny what we sometimes thought of as kids, eh? I had thought that the phasers, communications, and tricorders were actual real-world devices. I kept asking my father to get me a real phaser, so I could stun the bullies in school. He bought me the exploration set model kit and I was seriously let down.

The only thing I found vaguely positive about it was getting a younger generation to give Trek a shot...

That's why the newer kids won't give TOS a second-look...because it's a dated, old man's TV show...and the new take on the franchise has given it a more hip, sexy kick-in-the-ass feel...;)
Rob
Which will be very dated in about five years...or less.
There are some of "newer kids" (at 25 I'm sure I still seem like a kid to most of you) who do like TOS actually. And considering there's but a large culture of youth who have been drawn to classic TV, movies, and music, I don't think it's that much to worry about.

Quite a few people I know my age and younger even like black and white silent films after all.

TOS made me love Trek!! Everyone should appreciate where ST came from as long as they look at the franchise with an open mind. There are 100s of good non-TOS stories out there.

I think ST Remastered can't be underestimated for the appreciation new/old Trek fans who rarely watched TOS before have have brought to it..as evidenced on this thread.

RAMA

Well he wouldn't give you a real phaser, that would be dangerous! Of course he gave you a pretend one, he didn't want you to vaporise yourself. ;)

So that means that you'll be liking TNG, DS9, Voyager & Enterprise as well now?:vulcan::cardie:

As a 29 year old who just introduced his 4 year old daughter to Charlie Chaplin this weekend, I approve of this. :bolian:

Though, I'm fairly certain that she'll never like The Circus more than she likes Toy Story.

LOL! Probably not, but we can't win them all ;)

I like some TNG, mostly from the first three seasons. I like some DS9, mostly from the first two and a half seasons. No, I'll never like anything from VOY or ENT.

I am a die hard TOS fan who grew up watching it in the early 1970's. However, I really like TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT and try to watch all the episodes again every 2-3 years. There is something about being in that universe that appeals to me, and I don't care if it's a female captain or whatever.

As a huge Chaplin fan I heartily approve of this!!:bolian::techman::bolian::techman::bolian:

Don't know if you have any Harold Lloyd stuff, but he's awesome as well, and the bulk of his films are of outstanding visual quality thanks to his careful preservation of them.

I grew up watching TOS in the 70s. It took me a while to warm up to TNG and now I love that series about equally with TOS. I love all of the movies and VOY would be my next favorite series after the the first two. Never warmed too much to DS9 but there are a few episodes I do like.

I certainly hope that TOS still brings in fans in the years to come.

Same here. I don't like VOYAGER and ENTERPRISE as much as the first three, but there are individual episodes from those series that I enjoyed very much, and since they are connected to Star Trek, I'd much rather watch the two of them than shows made now.

I loved TOS from the time I was 5 ( 1966--The Man Trap--TOS's Premiere) right up to today...there's some suck-ass there..but that is forgiven..The good stories the adventure..all good

TNG..some suck-ass there...but mostly enjoyable to watch..I just tired of the deus ex machina technobabble that began to characterize the latter episodes more and more...

DS9..took us in different directions but again fell into the technobabble trap and ended with more of a wimper than a bang..

VOY..more deus ex machina technobabble than good stuff...

ENT..started out bad..got worse then became MUCH better (4th season was generally good, just one or 2 turkeys) then ended on a completely suck-ass episode.

The TOS movies were generally good movie fare..the TNG movies not so much

ST09 was a fun summer movie even with all the errors..but I do wonder if they can maintain that and have a better, more crafted story for the next movie?

I used to really dislike the series, and very much preffered TNG, but the more i watch, the more i start to love all of the stories. Some episodes i have seen really have made my imagination run wild and most of the time the stories are very good. I wanted to thank the people on here for convincing me to give it a second shot. :techman:

I agree, as well. TOS was a great start for entire STAR TREK:) line up and generations will still be enjoying those OUTSTANDING EPISODES, even after most of us, have passed on ourselves for many years to come.:techman::bolian:

One of the reasons TOS works is that it appeals to children and youth and adults, particularly those young at heart. ST09 will age very quickly because of its thoroughly juvenile approach.

Nah, I think Abrams Trek has the same spirit and energy as TOS. It'll age well, as TOS has done, DS9 is doing and the other series aren't.

Show her Buster Keaton next!!! :D Talk about someone who has stood the test of time...
