Exactly. So why should Yankee fans *not* be peeved if Jeter leaves?

You're the only person in this thread who has brought up the idea that Yankees fans shouldn't be peeved if Jeter were to leave (I know you have a persecution complex, but jeez). Other people have simply been saying that the guy is declining rapidly, is not worth the money and the years that he's demanding (especially since his defense is below average, at best, now -- lots of SportsCenter highlights of making a jumping throw from short doesn't make you a stellar defender), and the Yankees front office is more right than not for playing hardball with his agent.

In other news, Adam Dunn has signed with the White Sox, while the Cubs are looking into getting Paul Konerko. Christ, I wonder why I'm a Cubs fan, sometimes.

Mo back to the Yankees, 2 years, 30 mil. This one wasn't ever in doubt, as Rivera still actually is pretty good...
 
He's still money in the 9th. I'm impressed that he can still go 5 outs or so on consecutive nights when needed.

And in other news, the Mets are close to locking up 3 year extensions for Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo.

In a press release, new GM Sandy Alderson said, "We love Ollie's ability to mystify hitters. They just don't know where the pitch will end up, and neither do we!"

When reached for comment about Castillo, skipper Terry Collins noted, "We're expecting big things from Luis this season. We feel he has the potential to hit almost as many home runs as he has bad knees."
 
I am so excited right now. When I went to bed last night the word was that the deal was all but done, and Gonzalez was in Boston for a physical. I wake up earlier today to news that it's now officially done. I've been wanting Gonzalez in Boston for a long time now. I think he's going to put up monster numbers in Fenway. :D
 
And in reverse, Adrian Beltre will get a big paycheck to watch his numbers drop drastically on another team. :p

Now just gotta see the extension numbers, as there's no way Theo did this trade without having an extension pretty much ready to go. Too much in prospects for a 1 year rental...
 
Sounds like the Yankees have inked an agreement with Jeter: Three guaranteed years at $17 million, with a $3 million buyout option for the fourth year; if Jeter declines the buyout and plays the fourth season, he keeps the buyout money and gets an additional $5 million.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that Adrian Gonzalez is officially a member of the Boston Red Sox. No word on the extension, but Boston and Gonzalez have reportedly come to an understanding of what it will be, but it won't be announced until after opening day, which will save the Sox on their luxury tax.

Also, Jayson Werth to the Nationals for 7 years/$126 million? What the frak, Nats? :wtf: Werth's a darn good player, but not an $18 million/year type of player. And giving a 32 year old a seven year deal is just asking for trouble. Scott Boras does it again, I guess. As annoying as it can be sometimes, he does usually get a crapload of money for his clients, which is what he's supposed to do.

I was just a kid when it happened but even I had to shake my head in disgust/disbelief when Scott Boras convinced Tampa Bay to give Wilson Alvarez No. 1 starter money.
 
Rumor is that the framework of an extension has been agreed upon by Gonzalez and the Red Sox, reportedly for 8 years/$167 million. If true, I'm a little shocked that the Red Sox went for eight years; since this ownership took over they've been leery about going past five years with any player. But I guess Gonzalez is one of those rare players with whom they're willing to go beyond their limit.

Still annoyed about the Nationals getting Werth. I was kind of warming up to the idea of a lineup with both Gonzalez and Werth in it. Apparently what Washington had offered was so far beyond what anyone else had that Boras didn't even bother going to other teams and seeing if they were willing to match it.
 
The Nationals panicked after losing Dunn and completely screwed up the market for all the other teams. It's like a few years ago when the Royals gave Gil Meche $55 million. Gil Meche!!!! Your team sucks, you won't contend, you don't have a large payroll, so you overpay for someone who won't make a difference in the end?
 
What on Earth were the Nats thinking with Werth?

He's a nice player, but not the caliber of player that transforms a bad team overnight, plus he's already 32.
 
Yeah, WAY over-reaction on that one. What were they thinking? A nice guy to have on the team, but no way he's worth more than probably 14 a year, 4-5 years tops. 7/$126, paying him until almost 40, without any really impressive career stats?

Look at it this way: He was with the Phillies, who were really left-handed, and he's a power righty, right? Even there, he couldn't get into the meat of the order, and was batted lower. Plus played in the Phillies' stadium, which i'm sure inflated his power numbers quite a bit.

good luck with that one!

Gonna really mess up the market for the remaining FAs, though. If Werth is worth 7/126, what's Crawford worth now? 10/200?
 
The only way any big free agent comes to Washington is if they drastically overpay. Scott Boras strikes again.

I could have done without Werth's foolish comments about the Phillies not wanting him back. They offered him a contract on the level of the one that Jason Bay got. No one blames him for accepting the contract, but the Nats will probably regret this deal in a few years. After Werth's contract, will they be able to re-sign Zimmerman when his contract is up? They've got a few nice players, but Werth just replaces the production that Adam Dunn gave them, it doesn't really make them a better club.

If nothing else, the Nats have given notice that, if nothing else, they may be willing to entertain negotiations with big name free agents.

Great trade by the Bosox for Adrian Gonzalez, too.
