Perhaps. Still, though, I think it would be understandable if fans of those teams were just a little bit upset at those veterans leaving. Would you expect Yankee fans to be happy if Jeter leaves?

(Which, by the way, I don't expect him to do, if for no other reason that no other team could possibly afford him. I also expect Mo Rivera to return as well, although in his case, I expect negotiations to be over much sooner, since there's none of the bad blood that seems to be cropping up with Jeter. And the rumor about the Rangers going after Pettitte is false, by the way.)
 
You're right that no other team would pay $15 million a year for a rapidly declining Derek Jeter, but they might pay $10 million. Of course, Jeter would never take such an offer.
 
I remember when Danny Tartabull felt insulted by the offered he was given at the end of his career, so he quit. He would rather not play baseball than play at a lower wage (which was only a few million as opposed to several million). :lol:

I'd be thrilled to have an aging player with declining skills taking up that much payroll off my roster. Go after a couple of arms with the freed up cash. Because right now they have CC, and um, CC. Most teams get by with a light hitting shortstop with superior range and it's not like the Yanks don't have other bats.

Fans aren't going to be complaining about legacy and who's a true Yankee and all that crap when some shitty pitcher is getting shelled in Game 4 of a big playoff series.
 
As a Red Sox fan, I would be absolutely thrilled to see Derek Jeter remain in pinstripes for a few more seasons.

No disrespect intended, but I would have expected Red Sox fans to be gloating big-time if Jeter were to leave the Yankees (even if he didn't sign with the Sox). Because the Yankee image would take a definite hit if Jeter were to leave; and of course why would Sox fans not want that? ;)
 
Nah, he does more good for the Sox if he stays in New York. Better to have Jeter there than someone who can actually still hit and play shortstop. :techman:

Think of it this way, what do you think would happen to the Red Sox if some of *its* most well known players were to leave? You don't think there would be scorn and/or gloating heaped upon them?
 
There isn't anybody on the Red Sox who's even close to Jeter in terms of meaningfulness to the franchise and its history, so it's not a very good comparison.

I think the Yankees would "suffer" temporarily, but the fans would get over it pretty quickly when the team wins its usual 90-odd games and goes to the playoffs again. You can allow nostalgia to factor into your feelings in the subject of Jeter leaving, but the Yankees front office can't afford to get nostalgic (well, they can, but you know what I mean).

Still, it would probably be quite a shock to see players like Papi, Youkilis or Pedroia wearing another team's jersey (even considering that Papi was a Twin before this). So it would be with Jeter. You wouldn't expect Yankee fans not to have at least *some* uneasiness seeing Jeter playing for another team, would you? Why shouldn't we miss him?
 
I think I'd be for anything that helps out the Red Sox, even more if it'd help the Giants.

Well, Fisk was definitely before my time. As for the other two, I was on the other side of the continent at the time and didn't follow pro sports (even the Red Sox or the Patriots) nearly as closely as I do nowadays. I'm sure my parents were pretty peeved about at least Boggs and Clemens.
 
Could use Nomar as an example, if you wanted a recent one. Worked out alright... ;)

And the Jeter thing is a plus for the Sox fans either way. He leaves the Yankees, and we get to enjoy the crying and clothes-tearing, or he signs a big, expensive deal to stay, and soaks up $20 mil a year playing SS like a statue with diminishing offensive skills as well, which prevents them from upgrading the position or spending that money on something that would help them. Win-win, really.

Say what you want about Theo, but his cold-blooded ability to let go of fan favorites BEFORE they completely tank has been a plus.
 
Go back and read my posts again. I never said Yankees fans can't or won't be upset if Jeter leaves. I said the Yankees front office won't be and shouldn't be, and that the fans will eventually get over it. I was upset when Nomar got traded away, but I got over it when I realized it was for the good of the team (oh, and that whole winning the World Series thing helped :lol:).

Also, when I said last night that there isn't anyone on the Red Sox who could compare to Jeter, I meant there isn't anybody on the current roster, not that there has never been anyone who could or did.

And in Nomar's case, he didn't *choose* to leave the Redsox, did he? He was traded away - it wasn't his idea to leave. Big difference there.
 
Definitely. It probably would have stung more if he'd left via free agency. But like I said, I got over it.
 
Does anyone know what Pedro Martinez is doing these days? He didn't pitch at all in '10, but AFAIK he wants to in '11.

Also: Jamie Moyer to have Tommy John surgery, but wants to return in '12. Linky
