The College Football Thread

It would appear that Iowa will be going to the Toilet Bowl this year. Good grief.

Didn't know you were a Don Draper fan, Starbreaker.

I'm midway through the second season of Mad Men and loving it. I'm just trying to avoid talking about it until I'm all caught up.

Lesson learned from this year: NEVER pick NC State or Syracuse in Yahoo! Pick Em. They either get blown out or never cover the spread.

They're getting pressure on Weeden. Again, exactly what I did not want to happen. During other games they give up opening play of the game touchdowns and snap balls over their quarterback's head. Not this game. Of course not.

At least our defense is pressuring Landry. :vulcan:

I have a question. Because Boise State and LSU lost, and Stanford is winning 24-0 at half, if Stanford goes on to win, will they have a birth in the BCS? I kept hearing stuff like they wouldn't go to the Rose Bowl because that bowl would invite an at large bid and with all the politiking and the fact that Stanford doesn't travel well, they would be the odd one looking in. Well, given that the two teams in front of them both lost this weekend, they may not be going to the Rose Bowl, but could they be going to any of the other three bowls like the Fiesta?

Not really sure how the whole process works so I was just curious.

Feeling better after that long TD run? I hope he doesn't try that celebration so early again, though. He nearly lost the ball

Prior to this weekend, the prevailing thought was that Stanford would get screwed out of a possible BCS berth. BUT... with both Boise and LSU losing, that has to really open things up. I suspect tomorrow Mandel on SI.com will have some kind of scenario posted about what stands to happen. Oregon seems to have the PAC-10 bid locked up, but not the title game berth ... yet. TCU stands in good shape for an at-large bid, so you might see a Wisoncsin-TCU Rose Bowl.

I was feeling better until number four roughed the kicker after that beautiful defensive series. It's like every OU nightmare I've endured year after year after year. You cannot do stupid shit like that. Blackmon is all gimped up--I knew he was more injured than they let on, I just knew it after the Kansas game--and Weeden is limping, too. I want to have faith, but this shit's been happening for over 30 years to me. It wears on your heart, Neroon.

A healthy Weeden and Blackmon were just too much to ask, I suppose. Just too much to ask. It's going to be unbearable this week.

And--that deflection into the OU receiver's hands is the ball game.

What'd I tell you about that knife in my heart, Neroon? Somehow, some way, the football gods favor the Sooners. Right into his hands. :(

Two scores ahead. No healthy Blackmon. The offensive line has disappeared. Simply unbelievable. The number one offense in the country stymied. OU only has to turn it on for one game. Deflected right into his hands. Who'd have thought the offense would be what would let Oklahoma State down? Their defense forces three field goals. They make that beautiful stop in the first half only to have the special teams' idiot rough the kicker.

A ten win season and it's going to feel like a total failure because OU will go to the championship even though it's a three way tie. They'll condescend for another year and win the recruiting wars. Damn. :(

JM1776, take your shots. The Cowboys deserve them.

:weep: 3rd and 12 backed up to their own goal line. How often have I seen Weeden and Blackmon do that?

:weep: Each year I think the knife can't plunge in any deeper. How large does that roughing the kicker call that kept the OU drive alive loom now? This is Oklahoma State heartache at its best. Sadly, I'm all too familiar. Now we get to hear about OU's play for the ages for another year. Where the hell was this OU fourth quarter team all year while they were bumbling their way through 4th quarters here and there? :(

CRAP! Okay, GT made it a lot closer game than I thought it was going to be since we lost our star quarterback, but still, it very much sucks to lose to U(sic)GA!

At least my wife is happy, since she's an Auburn alum.

There needs to be a minor league of sorts in football. Skip college for the kids who don't want to go and who don't belong in college.
Disagree completely. I think the NFL ought to require their players earn a degree before they can play.

Holy cats this is one heckuva game!!! It ain't over yet, Dorian

Sadly, it is. I've been down this road before. My pokes get my hopes up time and time again only to come crushing down and have to listen to the Sooners' arrogance for another year. All they have to do is turn it on for one game and they can ruin the season of their "little Aggie brothers" as they like to call us. OU's been pathetic in the fourth quarter all year, and then they turn it on.

UN. BELIEVABLE. Yes, my boys fought back and yes, I'm glad they did, but when will they ever get to the next level?

Did I ever tell you the story of how Oklahoma State led 20-3 in the middle of the fourth quarter in the 1983 game only to lose? OU needed an onside kick in the last seconds of the game after they ran back 2 interceptions in the last two minutes. It looked as if OSU would hold on 20-17. OU's punter made the kick, it went end over end--hit the face mask of an OSU player and ricocheted in midair right into an OU player's hands who had nothing but daylight in front of him because all the defenders were going for the ball. He ran it in for the TD.

Oh, I've been through this before. :weep: If only this, if only that. If only Blackmon had been healthy. If only that defender had come up with the interception before Landry's late 4th quarter bomb. If only that moron hadn't roughed the kicker. It's always something. :borg:

Decided to watch the Irish-USC game today, and root for the high score. Grandpa, a non-sports fan, puzled by me recently getting into football as well as baseball, watches the second half as we eat dinner. He sees the rainy conditions: "Great day to go to a ball game and get pneumonia when you should be sitting at home and watching the game! Nobody should be there exept the players, and even then it should be called off. They ought to film these damn things ahead of time like game shows."

And the radio crowing has begun....even in OSU's best season ever they can't beat a middle of the road OU team.....:brickwall: i had a feeling that Bama/Auburn game was a bad omen.

1 – Oregon (11-0)

The Beavers have a chance in Covallis—a slight one.

2 – Texas Christian (12-0)

Unless OSU or USC come up big, they're gonna get aced out ... and they may well be better than either Auburn or Oregon.

3 – Auburn (12-0)

Sorry ... Alabama lost this game. Auburn did not win it. And, frankly, it felt like just a touch of the fix bein' on, to me.

4 – Wisconsin (11-1)

I bet UW wishes it'd saved a few of those points for Michigan State.

5 – Stanford (11-1)

Any of the top five are national championship worthy.

6 – Michigan State (11-1)

They're certain to be aced out of a major bowl simply because Ohio State is a bigger name and better draw.

7 – Ohio State (11-1)

They're always there at the end.

8 – Arkansas (10-2)

Now that one shocked me.

9 – Nevada (11-1)

Biggest win in program history, and validation of their whole season. Undefeated in the continental United States. Caveat, though: Louisiana Tech is not a gimme in the wake of their greatest triumph. Will they now cement the break?

10 – Boise State (10-1)

Utah State can move the ball, but ... the Broncos will be buckin' mad.

11 – Louisiana State (10-2)

They could easily be 12-0 ... or 7-5. This seems fair.

12 – Virginia Tech (10-2)

Ten consecutive wins and counting. I think they lay the smack down on FSU in the ACC title game.

13 – Nebraska (10-2)

And, once again, it's Oklahoma vs. the 'Huskers for all the marbles.

14 – Missouri (10-2)

A lot of good teams are gonna end up in crappy bowls this year.

15 – Oklahoma (10-2)

[Sigh.] [Sigh.] "So," Cowboys, "now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

16 – South Carolina (9-3)

At least they're not limping into Atlanta with a loss to Clemson.

17 – Alabama (9-3)

Wow ... way to finish, girls.

18 – Oklahoma State (10-2)

OK ... giving up one 75-plus yard touchdown pass with less than four minutes to play would have been bad enough. But to do so twice? Twice?! Within thirty seconds? They call them "safeties" for a reason, you freakin' morons.

Still, they never surrendered. That does count for something.

19 – Texas A&M (9-3)

Outside the three unbeatens, they're perhaps the country's hottest team.

20 – Utah (10-2)

Escaping the conference with a win against BYU means a lot to them.

21 – Florida State (9-3)

While that was Florida in Name Only, the 'Noles will take it.

22 – Mississippi State (8-4)

The only four-loss team in the poll. Explanation: It's a four-loss SEC team.

23 – Hawaii (9-3)

Now the win over Nevada looks terrific ... and in that highly unlikely event BSU flames out against Utah State, the Rainbow Warriors win the WAC.

24 – West Virginia (8-3)

All this chaos in the Big East, and the friggin' Mountaineers are still near the top. So annoying.

(tie) 25 – Navy (8-3)

It's mostly for naught if they lose to both Air Force and Army.

(tie) 25 – Northern Illinois (10-2)

The token little school.

Rutgers Watch: I don't want to talk about it.

Dude ... I wanted you to be right.

Let's hope they get paired in a bowl with some high profile school that got screwed out of a BCS bid, and the Cowboys take their anger out on 'em. Hell, if that occurs, they could still finish the year in the Top Ten!

[Hey, I'm tryin' to be optimistic, here.]

Deep baritone voice.....Nobody knoooows the trouble I've seeeeen.....No-boooody knooows my sooooroooooowwwww.....

Actually, I'm a chick. Word is Gundy took #4 who roughed the kicker out to the woods late last night and dropped him off....
