Dr McCoy's daughter

I was just wondering if Dr McCoy's daughter was ever mentioned in any of the episodes or 6 TOS films? I can't remember from any of the episodes but that doesn't mean she wasn't since I've only ever seen them once! I have only seen the first 2 films so am hoping someone may be able to enlighten me. Thanks.

I think Chekov's love interest from The Way to Eden, was originally suppose to be Joanna McCoy. And was originally suppose to be romantically attracted to Kirk.

But I'm old... so I may be misremembering.

I think the lady in The Way To Eden was a Russian who went to the Academy with Chekov. Irina someone I think her name was.

How do we know her name is Joanna? Was that ever established?

Joanna McCoy was supposed to be in an episode of TOS at one time or another, but for some reason the character never made it in. The story is that she was supposed to be one of the space hippies in "The Way To Eden". But that was changed. I'm not sure why.

That's the genesis of the characters existence. She was used and\or mentioned in the novels and comics. Marvel's Trek series featured a pretty decent story and she was even on the cover being held hostage by a Klingon. But I don't remember which issue.

There was also some talk at one time, if memory serves, that the character was going to be in one of the TOS films but for whatever reason that didn't happen either.

That's all I know and so I'm done here. Have a good day!

It's for the best that she didn't show up, every time we run into a younger relative of an Enterprise crewmember they usually end up dead: David Marcus and Scotty's nephew. There's Demora Sulu but she wasn't around long enough to die...

Don't forget she was also mentioned in the TAS episode 'The Survivor'. Something about being on some colony during a crop famine. Have to rewatch the episode to get the details. Also, in one of IDW's Star Trek comics there's a flashback to a Starfleet Academy graduation (I think) where McCoy talks to Joanna, trying to make amends for not being there for her. She also appears in a fan created TAS comic series. What I hope is that Joanna makes an appearance in a future New Voyages/Phase II episode.

That's correct.

It's mentioned in The Making of Star Trek, published between TOS's second and third seasons, that a future episode would feature Dr. McCoy's daughter Joanna. Kirk would be romantically attracted to her and the Kirk-McCoy relationship would have some new kinks and twists. The best-laid plans of mice and men . . .

This is from Memory-Alpha

In the original draft of "The Way to Eden", the character of Irina Galliulin was originally written to be Joanna McCoy, and to be a love interest for Captain Kirk (the episode's original title was "Joanna"), but that script was ultimately rejected. The idea of again introducing Joanna was proposed in the season four script, "The Stars of Saragasso", unfortunately the series was canceled before the script could come to fruition.

And there is also this which I found:

Which is the story outline for "Joanna".

Joanna was never mentioned in TOS or the movies. She was mentioned in TAS's "The Survivor" but not by name. If I remember correctly, Joanna was supposed to be in a 3rd season episode that eventually became "The Way to eden." But the 3rd season producer, Fred Freiberger, felt that Kirk, Spock and McCoy were all peers on the same age level and felt that McCoy shouldn't be old enough to have a fully-grown daughter. So Joanna became Irina, Chekov's old flame. I believe I read this a long time ago in a 2-pt interview with Fred Freiberger in Starlog # 39 & 40. David Gerrold and Dorothy Fontana also responded (via column or letter page in #40 & 41) to the article. The comment could have been in one of those instead of the interview.

I have another script treatment, a DC Fontana project that was yet another attempt to get Joanna McCoy into a workable script. It's called "The Stars of Sargasso" and the set-up is rather similar to a TAS episode that was actually made, "The Time Trap", which involves a mysterious "Sargasso Sea in space", in which starships get trapped.

She is a major character in the novel, "Crisis on Centaurus", and some licensed comics, but was called "Barbara" in a Gold Key comic.

That particular script outline was floating around the convention circuit in the 1970's, however, at that time it was never attributed to Dorothy Fontana. It certainly doesn't match her other scripts in writing style, and doesn't follow the basic script format of an hour long television episode either. It appears to have been the work of an amateur, and honestly, not a very talented one at that.

Another thought - apart from in the most recent movie with Karl Urban when I know he mentions the divorce - was reference ever made in the original series or first 6 films to McCoy's wife? Sorry for another question....

IIRC, it was part of McCoy's set-up in the Writers' Bible, but not something that made it into canon. I'm fairly sure there'd have been mention in the original script treatment of "Joanna".

Various tie-ins have called Mrs McCoy "Honey" (a clever name rather like "Lovey" in "Gilligan's Island" that could be explained away should a latter script give a different name), "Joann" and "Jocelyn".

The only reference to his past love life was in the Man Trap. So actually according to what's on screen he probably never had a kid because he had only one true love according to the first lines of that ep. But then again he could have just been in a mistake of a relationship and never considered the "one true love" or however it was referred to in "The Man Trap"

Nancy Crater was described as "that one woman in Dr. McCoy's past." Not that it means anything to the discussion. Him having had a divorce and daughter makes for a more interesting backstory.

And given the choice, I would ignore that line and substitute the "ex wife took the whole damn planet in the divorce" line... just because it is funnier.
