Nook Vs. Kindle?

Seriously, someone just tell me which one to buy, please. I want to buy my wife an ebook reader for Christmas. Sounds like it's Nook vs. Kindle. I really can't figure it out, so I am tunring to the forum for guidance.

Here's the thing, I procure many of our ebooks via sourceswhichshallnotbenamed, and would want to continually add those to the reader. Is one of them better than the other?

I love my kindle, but I'm not sure I can help. It was an easy choice for me. My dad had a big kindle library, and half the point of my buying a kindle was so that I would be able to have access to his e-book library. Also, at the time, the kindle was the only one with the new Pearl screen (much better contrast), so that added to its pros.

I'm not sure if the nook has the pearl screen yet. I recommend holding off on buying a nook if the pearl screen isn't yet available.

Edit: Regarding the use of strange formats: you've really got to go with a nook. The kindle doesn't play other formats. That's fine with me, but it sounds like you might need more format flexibility.

I recommend the Nook. It's sturdy, has a long battery life, and as Snaploud said, can read a variety of formats, making it more usable than Amazon's Kindle. The Nook also has a "lend" feature, allowing users to share e-books for up to 14 days. Can't do that with a Kindle.

Between the two, I'm planning on buying the Nook. It has the best balance of features and price, for my money.

i'm in a similar position. cant decide either. my problem is that i want to take notes during classes i cant bring my bigass 15.6 inch laptop with me.... and frankly, neither gets the job done.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I think I am leaning towards the Nook Color, especially in light of how I...ahem...procure my ebooks.

I wouldn't recommend buying a Nook Color. It has a back-lit screen rather than an e-ink screen. I can safely say that most (if not all) of this thread's nook recommendations were for the black-and-white e-ink screen version.

Yeah, if you want an LCD read books on, get an iPad or a laptop or something. Otherwise it's kind of a waste of money. Any e-book reader I buy would be of the e-ink variety.

And I just read last week that color e-ink was invented or introduced or something. Not color LCD, color e-ink.
I read it's not as crisp or bright as regular color LCDs, which I would expect.

But now that color e-ink is here, how long before it becomes commonplace? Black e-ink devices might seem terribly dated in, what... six months? A year? Six weeks?

The technology exists. It's just not commercially available (for the average consumer, anyway). It will probably be a year or two before a brand like the kindle incorporates color e-ink into its products.

Regardless, the Nook Color is not color e-ink. It's a back-lit screen.

Even so, I bet there will still be a market for the (likely cheaper) b&w e-ink as well as the color e-ink devices. I mean, how many times are you going to need color when reading your collection of novels?

well, so now i am torn between nook color and nook e-ink. if i get a color for her, i could just afford the one. if i went with nook e-ink, i could actually afford 2, and get one for each of us. now i am back to not knowing what to do! ack!

I now have both Nooks; if you 'just' want to read novels you should get the NookClassic; if you also want to browse the web, play games and watch videos you should get the NookColor.

that actually helps a lot. all i think i want to do with this is read. we have laptops and iphones for apps and browsing.
