"Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel)

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

I'm always a little suspicious of trailers that have too many funny bits, even with a comedy. It all to often means all the best bits are in the trailer and everything else is a mess.

Every single comedy trailer made in the past 20 years has a ton of funny parts shown in it, I don't think it means what you say it does. It just so happens that most comedies (movies) are shite, but I don't think the trailer should be taken as any kind of indicator. The trailers for 40 Year Old Virgin and The Hangover, for example, are hilarious, as are the movies.

Seemed like a funny trailer and movie, until it advocating abusing men and beating them to a bloody pulp as a great funny thing to do for girls - as an answer to a man saying he'll protect her.

A feminist heroine that abuses men for the slightest perceived insult - that is a level of misandry that's rare even for this day and age.

And no, it is not funny.

I wouldn't write this one off immediately just because of the talent and track record of its cast and crew. Natalie Portman and James Franco are two of the best young actors working today, and the movie is directed by David Gordon Green, who before directing "Pineapple Express" directed some of the most mature, thoughtful, and strikingly shot critically acclaimed indie movies of the past ten years.

I've only seen one of them ("All the Real Girls"), but it looked gorgeous cinematography-wise and had exceptional performances and writing (aside from a few typical excessively quirky indie moments). Based on that, I would expect nothing less than top notch quality from anything with his name attached (although I haven't seen "Pineapple Express" either).

It's always amazing to see how many people on this forum have a stick crammed tightly up their nether regions.

It's always amusing to see how a couple of f-bombs can be considered great comedy *and* satire by so many. ;)

I wouldn't put accents in a movie like this under so much scrutiny. It is a spoof/farce/slapstick-y comedy, after all. I don't think we're meant to take them seriously as plausible British accents. I also doubt the cast is trying very hard to master such accents and make convincing Brits. :D

I laughed.

It's slapstick, not real violence.

Like the Three Stooges or Laurel & Hardy.

No, it wasn't. She was brutally beating and kicking the living shit out of him. There was no-eye poking or pie-throwing going on, nor were they shoving EACHOTHER gently.

You wanna test if it was misandry? Imagine the guy beating and kicking the living shit out of her in the same way. Still laughing?

Yes, because that's the singular thing people are laughing at. "Oh man, he said a naughty word! LOL!!!!"

I guess normally, in these brilliant comedies you're fond of whatever they are, people are instead laughing at words like "the" and "what." Yes, that must be it! It's not the context or delivery of the words, the scene at hand, or anything like that. It's solely the words.

I wish I was as smart and cultured as you.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

I'm sorry but as much as I'm looking forward to this movie, how does this belong in Sci-Fi?

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

^ Science Fiction & Fantasy Forum. And anyway, I loved the irreverence in the trailer. The movie might end up being painful to watch, but I find the idea hilarious.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

^Good point, sometimes I forget about the fantasy part. It does look either hit or miss and could end up as another "Year One" fiasco but I don't think that will be the case.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

Yeah, a lot will depend on whether or not they've already shown the best jokes in the trailer. But, personally, it's piqued my interest -- and I'm not one who generally goes to the theater for comedy films.

First of all, a heroine punching out or beating up a boorish and chauvinistic male "protector" is a shtick I've seen a myriad of times on TV and movies. It has nothing to do with the writers hating men or hating women. FFS....

Secondly, I think you're over-stating the level of violence in that scene. Violence is more than the action, it's the result. It's a comedy, I somehow doubt he has more than some birdies flying around his head after his ass-whooping.

Yeah, the movie is advocating that women beat men for a good time in real life.

Often sexism and misandry is hidden even from those who have it in them. Listen to yourself very carefully: a man offers to protect a woman, and for the audacity of being attracted to her and wanting to protect her, the woman "comically" beats the living daylights out of the man.

How about we switch around the proverbs:

A woman offers to protect a man, and for the audacity of being attracted to him and wanting to protect him, the man "comically" beats the living daylights out of the woman.

Sounds different suddenly, doesn't it? There are different standards for different genders aka sexism.

When a strong person beats the crap out of a weaker person for no reason whatsoever, it is abuse. Or at least, it should be. But the average person only calls it abuse when it is a woman that gets it.

Men get abused by women in relationships all the time. Even if they were strong enough physically to fight the woman, the very above sexism would mean that he'd be the one thrown in jail for being abusive, even though he was just defending himself. Then there's the leverage of taking away the children from him with a divorce, extorting compliance to his own abuse from him, because in our society, that's exactly what would happen.

Secondly, I think you're over-stating the level of violence in that scene. Violence is more than the action, it's the result. It's a comedy, I somehow doubt he has more than some birdies flying around his head after his ass-whooping.
Once again; have him beat up her comically with nothing but birdies flying around her head. Do you think you could pull that one off, or is it so distasteful to you, you don't even want to try? The gender of the person getting beat up over nothing shouldn't matter; it should be just as distasteful a man gets this treatment in a movie than a woman.

Either that, or enjoy women getting comically beaten up over nothing every bit as much as a man.

Yeah, the movie is advocating that women beat men for a good time in real life.
Sadly, it seems close to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hn-wL6hPq8

There are massive double standards. There's no problem with women abusing men, and beating them, because according to society men are evil, powerful dominants that can't be hurt by the weak little female. If you get this view everywhere, including movies all over the place, it's pretty much a tacit allowance to hurt men.

I could definitely picture it being funny if a man beat up a woman in a movie if the scene was written to be funny. Sometimes it's just funny to watch characters, regardless of gender, get beat up in movies. It just depends on the context of the scene and whether the audience is aware that they are, in fact, watching a comedy.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

It's like all those time when Jerry got the best of Tom. If we turned it around, would it still be funny? No! It would just be more cat on mouse abuse! Stop the madness!
