Mac OS X 10.7 - Codename "Lion"

Considering the basis on iPad/Touch Screen tech I would agree, although I guess from a marketing side of things, Mac OS X has been pretty damn successful.

^ It is, but a similar situation exists with Panther (OS X 10.3). Depending on locality, panther refers to either a leopard, cougar/puma/mountain lion, jaguar, or any big cat (technically, all of the big cats are panthers).

^ A cougar is basically the same animal as a puma, isn't it? Puma was OS X 10.1.

Seeing as this is just another 10.X release, I'd say sticking to synonyms for cougar would be highly appropriate.

By the time OS X 10.8 rolls around, it will probably be different enough that they won't use that number and they'll go to 11.

So perhaps OS X 11 should be nicknamed 'Nigel Tufnel'.

^ I figure it's been so long that 'X' has unofficially become the name of the software, and not the Roman numeral. :vulcan: :D

Just a thought, PC/Windows users tend to call OS 10.x OS X while Mac users tend to call it OS 10.x. Of coarse that will change once they pass 10.9 :)

I am a Mac user, and I always just call it OS X. That's usually what I hear other Mac users call it as well, they just say OS X 10.6.5 or whatever number it is.

Unless the desktop OS becomes iOS writ large (which I dearly hope it does not), then I think this'll probably continue, with 'X' simply being the name rather than the number.

I'm still trying to figure out how the iPad is Magic

Once you figure it out, it's no longer magic. ;)

There's no sense getting twisted over Apple's marketing PR. They've elevated hype to a level of self parody that they have to be aware of.
