I watched the video. I had to click through a couple links to get there, though.

Apparently, you don't have to go into the store to buy lottery tickets. There's a window for lottery ticket purchases. I think that would be fairly easy to explain to a wife (assuming he wasn't there to buy something they could enjoy together).

Clearly whoever bought the ticket didn't think this through. Although for that kind of money, I wouldn't hesitate to claim it. The embarrassment can't really last forever (I bet the money will last longer).

Some winners do go broke...mostly the ones who don't think things through.

I don't remember the numbers exactly, but I recall some statistics, and the majority of lottery winners go broke. And, they usually do it rather quickly. I guess that's because winning requires buying tickets, and that pretty much requires that you don't understand math or finances.

This is exactly right. For the ticket in the OP's story, it's only been three days since the winning numbers were drawn, which is no time, really. I've seen comparable jackpots in the Lotto where you didn't hear a peep out of the winners for a week, two weeks, even a couple of months. Though I don't recall seeing any statistics, I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that the larger the jackpot is, the longer it takes (on average) for the winner to make all of the necessary arrangements to ensure a safe home for their winnings.
