An adult bookstore in Michigan that offers pornographic movies and sex toys has also sold a winning lottery ticket worth $128 million, MyFoxDetroit.com reports.

Uptown Bookstore in Highland Park, Mich., sold Saturday's only winning Powerball ticket, according to the station.

The ticket was the only one to match all of the numbers of the multimillion-dollar jackpot -- 7, 12, 23, 34, 38 and 33.

If the winner takes the cash option it is less than half of $128 M...then taxes which is almost another half.

32+ M after taxes is alot but still...look at where you got the winning ticket!? :lol:

What can I say? I'm really worried about coming forward. I only went there the one time, it's not like it's a habit or anything.

Clearly whoever bought the ticket didn't think this through. Although for that kind of money, I wouldn't hesitate to claim it. The embarrassment can't really last forever (I bet the money will last longer).

I'm wit' you. I could care less who knows if I go in to an adult bookstore, not having won $128M in one.

What's burning my butt is that the big Mega-Millions & Powerball jackpots from last week were both won in Michigan.
 
Maybe the winner just doesn't want his wife to find out he went to a sleazy bookstore and thus take all of his thusly earned winnings via her newly hired divorce lawyer.
 
If I had just won a 128 million, I wouldn't give a shit. Anyone that gave me crap over it, just remind them that I won a 128 million dollars.
 
For $128 million I would gladly give the world an explicitly detailed account of my sexual preferences.

Seriously though, many winners take a while before they speak up. They have to get all their ducks in a row before coming forward, like getting lawyers, money management people etc. I understand relations and long lost friends come out of the woodwork begging for money once someone they know wins.

I agree with Randi: the winner could just be getting his/her/their ducks in a row. I know I sure as hell wouldn't care who knew where I bought the winning ticket if it were me.

Gosh honey, I saw the lotto sign, and was suddenly overcome with a powerful feeling of luck. Of fate. I didn't even think. Just pulled into the lot, ran inside, and went straight to the front counter. Honest to God, I didn't even realize it was a dirty book store until after I'd bought the ticket and was on my way out the door. Boy was my face ever red!

Winning sum is 128 million.. if chosen to be received in cash (or rather a deposit to an account) one loses half? And then the state steps in with taxes?

How does that work (taxes i get but only getting half if i choose to get the entire sum)?

It depends on the state you live in...the taxes on that amount is 35% + State taxes like here it is 4% so 39% total...less than half but still alot out of the total amount.
As for the cash option that is roughly half of the advertised jackpot about...give or take a few million.

A fixed percentage of every Mega Millions and Powerball ticket sold goes into its CASH jackpot. The cash jackpot is all the money that the lottery has on hand from the sale of tickets in the game. If a player chooses the cash option, then the lottery will pay the entire cash amount to the winner (less income tax withholding amounts required by federal and state laws).

The lottery also offers an ANNUITY jackpot option that can help reduce taxes and offers the winner a 100% guaranteed income stream over time. The two games offer different types of annual income streams, giving the players more options. If a winner elects the annuity option, then the lottery will invest the entire cash amount before taxes are deducted. The difference between the CASH jackpot and the ANNUITY jackpot is the interest earnings that build over time. The Powerball annuity jackpot earns more interest for two reasons.

1. The Powerball Annuity Jackpot invests more money for a longer period of time. The Powerball annuity is paid out in graduated amounts (rising by 4% per year to keep up with inflation) over 29 years (30 payments). The annual payments grow larger to keep pace with the winner’s expected cost of living. The Mega Millions annuity is paid out over 25 years (26 payments) with equal payments each year. In both cases, the first payment is an immediate cash payment.

2. The Powerball Annuity Jackpot is invested in a wider variety of securities than the Mega Millions Jackpot, allowing more interest to be earned. All of the securities used to support both games’ jackpots offer significant levels of U.S. Government backing. It is important to understand that the lottery is invested in these securities; not the winner. The winner has a contract with the states to pay the annual prize payment, no matter what happens to the securities.

Since the two games' jackpots are invested differently, if the CASH jackpots are the same, the Powerball jackpot will pay a larger ANNUITY over time than Mega Millions. If the ANNUITY value of the jackpots are the same, then Mega Millions' CASH jackpot will be larger than Powerball's CASH jackpot. The CASH jackpot amounts present the true present-day values of the jackpots. A winner who wishes to take the CASH jackpot should compare only the CASH jackpot amounts. The ANNUITY jackpot amounts will be important for those winners who plan to select a long-term, fully guaranteed income stream.

[edit] The only way you will see the total $128 M is taking the annuity...and of course that gets taxed. :shrug:
