First-time "Alien" watch... some questions...

[Q
Dallas said Ash had replaced his regular science officer at their last stop, and Ash turned out to be a company plant acting on orders that Ripley read with her own eyes.
The company may not have known if there was anything viable at the signal's source but it certainly hoped there was.

Exactly. It was a case of being there at the right place at the right time. The Nostromo would be passing near to LV426 so they took the opportunity, rather than have to wait potentially a year or more to get a specialised mission organised.

Then again, if they had they might've been able to successfully gather a specimen and get it back to the bio weapons division without all the calamity that generated.

Oh and despite what is said above, my personal preference is to watch the first three films then stop. Alien 3 has an undeserved reputation for being poor, yet it's actually one of Sigourney Weaver's most powerful performances. While Resurrection isn't entirely disastrous, I prefer to stop the story at Alien 3.

No, stop at Aliens, the best sequal of all time. Or maybe just skip it and go straight to 4. NEVER watch 3, worst sequal of all time, it will spoil your enjoyment of the first 2 wonderful films

No, ignore everything that saturn5 says (:p), Alien 3 is a great underrated film. The extended cut on the Quadrilogy DVDs is far better than the original, although it does omit some of the better scenes in the Theatrical cut (certain scenes are replaced rather than extended).

Decide for yourself anyway.

Alien Resurrection is utterly worthless trash.

No, it's not a great film by any stretch of the imagination but it's ok, has some nice touches just pales beside the brilliance of Alien and Aliens. You can see the beginnings of Firefly here, I like the Ripley/Cal relationship and it gives Ripley her happy ending. But if you watch 3 you have to watch 4 to stop yourself slitting your wrists.

Ignore everything candlefright says;) Frankly Gaith given our comments take the hint on 3. If you want to feel depressed and sickened by all means watch it then watch 4 to make yourself feel somewhat better. Put it this way, for a long time Aliens was my favourite ever film. Now I can't watch it any more and don't even own it on DVD because Alien 3 ruined it for me so badly.
I remember watching an Alien cinema marathon and everyone had a great time with Alien and Aliens (rising to their feet and cheering at the powerloader scene) but when it came to Alien 3 over 3/4s of the audience walked out to spend a couple of hours at the Forbidden Planet and about half returned for Alien 4

3 isn't a great film, though a lot of that is down to how it was messed about, and the fact that it features some really bad early CG, but I admire what it was trying to do, take the franchise in a slightly different direction, and to return to the notion of the original that one alien was all you needed. 4 should have been a better film than it was, it just doesn't seem to hang together, and it wasn't helped by the fact that Starship Troopers came out at roughly the same time...now that's the alien film people wanted!

I really wish Scott was doing a sequel rather than a prequel to Alien though. And I also quite liked the notion of Scott and Cameron teaming up to make Alien 5!

Certain shots of the alien itself, it just doesn't fit into the backgrounds well enough for me, has the look of being superimposed.

That said it is a while since I' ve seen it.

I usually go for 3 over 4 in arguments though, because at least it tried. 4 just wanted to be a clone of Aliens for me.

^ Ahh, it's actually a puppet rotoscoped in, the only CG bits are the shadow it leaves.

I agree it looks pretty shit in places though.

Oh I'm sorry I see what you did there now ;) I guess I'm too superficial, I was thinking looks

Definitely watch Alien 3. It's not as good as the first two but FAR FAR from the abomination some have for it.

As far as Resurrection, it's pretty awful. However there is one scene in particular that makes the whole movie worth it to me. Don't want to spoil things so I shall say no more.

Did anyone get the Blu Ray set today?

I'm going for my umpteenth watch tonight, but first time in HD :D

Alien's bloody boring. I've no desire to see it again. Aliens is alright, but isn't really much more than a schlocky action film. Alien 3's the real gem in my view; it's bleak and...well, bleak. Alien Resurrection's vile.

I CAN'T AFFORD IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:( :( :( :( :( :(

Plus I don't have a Full HD tv, nor 5.1 surround sound, nor the time to sit down and watch it (newborn twins robs you off certain freedoms...).

You mean Kim Flower's backside?:drool::lol:

No, don't watch Alien 3, just enjoy the brilliance of Alien and Aliens and leave it there, go NO further! If you can't resist then watch AvP and AvP;R, they're dumb fun but harmless enough, they won't spoil the series for you. Alien 4 is underrated but enjoyable enough, it's Star Trek 6 compared to Wrath of Khan, ROTJ compared to Empire Strikes Back

Alien 3 has no redeeming features whatsoever, worst sequal of all time and maybe worst film. What were they thinking?:confused:
