Ratings for the Premier - Is this the end of SGU?

The Cancellation Bear is an animal that kills (or cancels) shows.
You don't have to be the fastest (highest rated) to get away. You just have to be faster than the ones that get eaten.

Smackdown shouldn't be on a Science Fiction channel to begin with. Of course, it is hard to call it that anymore anyway.

Sanctuary's ratings will go down because its such an average show and the opening episode was meh. The only reason I watch it is because of Amanda Tapping and the fact we have so little SCI FI tv to enjoy these days.

However I might pack it in this season if the quality doesn't improve.

uummmmm the sanctuary premiere was terrible, it was a lil to over the top and SGU has been to underwhelming , i need something right in the middle

Wrestling gets better ratings than any of SyFy's original dramatic programming. What more is there to say than that? SyFy is a business and they're not obligated to only carry certain kinds of shows. Hell, the whole point of their name change was so they could cast off any pretense of being a sci-fi oriented network.

Actually the point of the name change was so they had a copyrightable name they could use to market. Anyone can sell a Sci Fi sprocket, but only SyFy can sell a SyFy sprocket.

That was also part of it, but a lot of the talk coming out of SyFy itself was that this was also about expanding beyond "sci-fi." "Imagine greater," and all that.

I always said it would be cancelled after two years, looks to be heading that way.

Everyone's blaming the change to a tuesday night, how about blaming the fact that the series is an awful, bleak, boring mess of a show, with the most unlikeable cast on tv?

Stargate started dying the instant the Ori were brought in, if not a year or two before that. Is anyone honestly surprised it's come to this?

The Ori were...interesting...were were curious but the end component was going to the same as the G'ould just faster. But you're right you tell that something strange was going on with Stargate even then...replacing characters with Farscape refugees and what-not.

They really needed to start to taking gate into something fresh and I don't mean SGU. As many times as the Earth had been in direct danger it was time to reveal the gate program to the public. They really need to embrace the conflict that would have stirred up on Earth. It would have been Fantastic. Can you imagine these super weapons in the hands of the governments of Earth? MAN I could write all kinds of drama based on the political intrigue, holocaust and hope from the technology of the Stargate program.

You wanna see people in great drama positions reveal aliens to the general public. Heck the EVENT did it and it's not even as good as series as Stargate who could have done it much much much better.

Syfy should be used as a case study on how to run a cable network into the ground.

Imagine Greaterrrrrrrrr

Ghost Hunters (9pm, 62 minutes)
- 2.082 million viewers
- 1.2/2 HH
- 0.9/3 A18-49

Ghost Hunters is doing better than SGU right now.
That's always going to be like that. It's mostly fake. Paranormal activity doesn't happen nearly enough to spin one series let alone 3. It's for a certain intelligence level that I'm not going to comment on further but the TPTB know what their doing there.

Its too bad that the networks dont really count DVR ratings, or at least consider them.
The networks do consider DVR numbers. However, it's the ratings company Nielsen Media Research and, by extension, the ad buyers who don't fully take into consideration DVR numbers. For a better picture at how DVR numbers are or are not considered, take a look at the article I linked to here earlier today. The article -- specifically the section I quoted in that thread -- does say that Nielsen, under pressure from various networks, is going to be changing its consideration of DVR numbers.

They're right not to count them. I fastforward through them. I imagine that most do the same once they realize they are listening to the volume raise almost 3 TIMES as high as the program you were watching. DVR is going to be the death of tradtional advertising.

Haven't you notice how obnxious the You Tube pops up s are getting? That's going to be the future. You Tube may be banking a lot of money in the future.

WTF is a Cancellation Bear?

He was a character set to be introduced in the Care Bears animated series. Ironically, he did not appear because the show was cancelled.

Is it wrong that I laughed for a good seven minutes on that? Cause I did.

I hadn't watched the show at all. I gave up at the end of last season or sooner.
I checked the ratings just now...They dipped 20%. Under a million on Live and the Gateworld site is like someone just forecast-ed Armageddon. Those people are really tearing each other up. These are the same ones that last year were telling the Fans that didn't like the show to get out and stop complaining about it...now...Go Look...there are Fans (and not just a few) BEGGING for the Fans to support SGU to save Stargate.

I've never seen anything like it.

Well, I disagree with that, personally Ghost Hunters is one of my favorite shows on TV, and I like their stance and methodology on paranormal investigation. But that's a topic for another thread.

Who's gloating? I'm certainly not. I don't want this show to be canceled. But I also don't want it to be so consistently lousy. It has a lot of potential if only we had competent people writing it. The actors aren't the problem, the production values aren't the problem--it's all the writing.

I'd disagree with that. I think the actors are a large part of the problem. Perhaps, the writing contributes to poor characterization. But, the end result of both the actors and poor character writing, are characters that I just can't care about. They're just not compelling.

Now, the setup, the mystery, I can dig all of that. And, plot oriented SGU episodes tend to do well. The more an SGU episode relies on the characters the worse it is. That's not a knock against character based stories, it's a knock against SGU characters. In BSG, I didn't always like a character, but damn, they sure were compelling all-in-all. They had better actors.

I can see the writing playing a role, but ultimately SGU characters are going to be hamstrung by the actors. If SGU is to have a chance, they'll have to change course and play up their strengths (the mystery, the setup, etc) and minimize their weaknesses (characters).
