The Egypt-themed opening night party was held last Friday night at a club near the theatre - the entire cast was in attendance. I was glad to be able to speak to them because, as wonderful as the leads are (they're both incredible!), there are some amazing performances among the rest of the cast too. Kate was rocking a little black dress - there was a photographer there so hopefully he'll put the pictures online soon. I only spoke to Kate briefly, and quite late, just as she was leaving, and I was rather, ah, "merry" by that point.
For the VIP night, after the show ended, one of the production assistants took us on a tour backstage - we saw the various prop storage areas, the rooms where the actors change in between scenes, the 'secret' tunnels where they dash from one side of the stage to the other (including through the lobby), and then the huge new space under the stage, which is currently mostly filled with the equipment needed for the river which runs down the middle of the stage.
Once we came up the stairs, back on to the stage, Kate and John Douglas Thompson were waiting there. So exciting! There were only 3 of us doing the VIP thing, so we all had a good chat with them both and a glass of champagne. They gave us each a photo from the show and also a poster, which were all signed. One of the guys from the theatre then took photos of us with both of them (together and separately); the photos will be emailed to us soon. They didn't stick around all that long as it was late and they were understandably tired. They were both really lovely.
I was at the show (and in Hartford) alone so Kate asked the guy running the VIP night (who was very sweet!) to walk me back to my hotel, as he lived out that way, bless her.
It was a really wonderful night and a perfect end to my trip - it was expensive but I'm so glad I did it.
