It's official: Jackson to direct the Hobbit

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

I just can't believe they're sinking $500 million into these movies. The Hobbit is not a story that needs $500 million to be told, even if you add on stuff regarding Gandalf and the White Council.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

I have seen this from several other sources too. It's about time.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

What I am looking forward to the most? Two more films worth of Howard Shore's Middle Earth scores. Can't wait!

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

In general I am not a huge fan of Shore's music. But the soundtracks of LOTR is my favorite off all time.

And thank god, now I just hope the labor issue gets settled where all parties can stay in NZ.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Finally! Cant wait for it! Im looking forward to hearing whom the cast will be in the movie. Putting my hobbit feet on now!

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Wheeeeeeee!

PS- Couldn't give two figs about the 3D.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

You and me both. I'm sick of 3-D just as much as I'm sick of Blu-Ray. Time for these fads to fade away.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Could you guys please shut the fuck up about 3D? It's getting tiresome. Listen, here's the deal. You stop bitching about 3D, and I stop bitching about Star Trek 2009: Where No Abomination Has Gone Before.

I like this quote:
Peter is incredibly talented and has the creative vision and experience to bring this beloved property to life in a way that no other film-maker could.
So why did they consider other directors to begin with? Hypocrites!

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Honestly, I'm disappointed that the films will be in 3D. That will fundamentally separate them from the LOTR films just as surely as the new CGI separated the Star Wars prequels from the OT (perhaps not to the exact same extent, but enough to make a difference).

Besides, 3D remains a gimmick that doesn't significantly add to the story and, for many viewers, can work against immersing the audience in the story world.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

I'm disappointed that these films are going to be in color. :(
Great news, though. I genuinely cannot wait for these flicks.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

If you don't watch a movie in 3D, then just watch it on one of the many non-3D screens on which it's bound to show.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Of course I plan to see it in 2D. My point still stands, though. Current 3D tech adds nothing to the story and can actually be a detriment to the viewing experience. It's a gimmick, plain and simple. Furthermore, shooting the Hobbit films in 3D fundamentally separates them from the LOTR films -- a valid point considering Jackson's declaration that he wanted the final moments of Hobbit films to eventually lead directly into the LOTR films in terms of design.

Color adds nothing to the story! Anything above mono sound adds nothing to the story! Widescreen adds nothing to the story!

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Except we're not talking about full color or stereo sound, are we? Current 3D is a gimmick. As of right now, it's the equivalent of going from b&w to, say, 6-bit color. You're simply not getting a full three-dimensional experience from current 3D tech, no matter how badly its proponents want to proclaim otherwise. And the lack of full three dimensional detail is a detriment, particularly in a film like the Hobbit, which is meant to link with films previously shot in 2D. I'm sure at some point 3D will develop to the point where it is equivalent to going from b&w to full spectrum color. But that won't happen in time for The Hobbit.

I agree that 3D conversions in post-production suck ass. But the kind of 3D used for Avatar was excellent and added quite a bit to the experience for me. The push to have everything in 3D is pretty silly, since the technology is not affordable for most productions and doing a 3D conversion is garbage. But if you're actually going to film in 3D it makes a big difference.

It's all the crappy, poorly-done 3D that's giving the concept a bad name. Oh well. I don't see Peter Jackson half-assing this.

What would that be in your mind?

When you can no longer distinguish discrete three dimensional elements in a film (and when you can do so without artificial elements, such as glasses). It's the same premise for digital color: at some point the bits become so fine that they appear to be a continuous spectrum (even if they aren't). Once the 3D elements look like the 3D environment we see with our own eyes -- and not an obvious artificial representation of three dimensions -- then that's when I can accept 3D as being more than a gimmick.

I don't see Jackson half-assing this, either. And I agree that filming in 3D makes a difference. The problem is twofold, though. Even Avatar, which was filmed explicitly for 3D, didn't manage a full three dimensional experience (more to the point, its most convincing 3D sequences were the CGI ones, not the live-action ones). Secondly, even if Jackson produces a 3D representation superior to Avatar, not only will it not be seamless 3D, it will be a fundamentally different aesthetic from the LOTR films, which works against his stated desire for all five films to blend together, visually.

EDIT:
By the way, I'm not opposed to 3D in principle. In fact, there are times when I think the illusion is particularly effective. For example, I'm looking forward to seeing Tron: Legacy in 3D. That should be quite a visual experience -- just as Avatar was quite a visual experience. But I don't see 3D as being particularly useful or helpful in making The Hobbit a better pair of films.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Casting buzz seems to suggest that Martin Freeman will be Bilbo, while David Tennant and James Nesbitt might also be in it. Has Steven Moffatt been whispering in Jackson's ear during the making of Tintin? (All have appeared in Moffatt shows - Dr Who, Sherlock and Jekyll).

Also, Michael Fassbender may also be in it. Will he once again be playing the young Ian McKellen (as per his Magneto in the First Class movie)? Doubt it, but it's fun to speculate.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Why would there need to be a "young Ian McKellen"? Gandalf isn't a human, he's a divine spirit sent to oppose Sauron and provide guidance to the peoples of Middle-earth, along with Saruman and three other Wizards. They'd all been in Middle-earth for about two thousand years by the time of The Lord of the Rings, though two of the Wizards disappeared into the East and were never heard from again.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

I'm about to start editing in 3D very soon so I'll let you know what a shit fight it is from the other side of the fence.
