Season One abrupt episode endings?

Alright, so I'm watching season one for the first time, and I recently finished watching If Wishes Were Horses. I noticed that over the course of the last three episodes, the endings have been very abrupt with no follow up.

In the Storyteller, the episode ended before we found out the result of the negotiation between the two clans. In Progress, the episode ended with the old man beaming out, and we didn't find out if he relocated successfully. If Wishes Were Horses ended with us knowing next to nothing about the aliens that had been observing them.

Do these threads get resolved at any time, and can I expect more of these pseudo-cliffhangers as I get further into the series?

We never find out anything else about the Storyteller clans, the old man from Progress, or the If Wishes Were Horses aliens.

However, DS9 does continue to do pseudo-cliffhangers, especially at the ends of seasons. But don't worry, they get much better.

I don't mind season ending cliffhangers since they're usually resolved. It just annoys me when a plot element is left up in the air and never spoken of again.

In Progress, the episode ended with the old man beaming out, and we didn't find out if he relocated successfully.

Because that wasnt the point of, or particularly relevant to, the story of the episode. It was a Kira piece, showing her character grow and adapt after the occupation, making a difficult choice to further the post occupation Bajor etc..

Whether the guy successfully relocated or died on the runabout back to Bajor doesnt affect that story.

A lot of the episodes you mentioned were designed to be episodic, without any kind of follow-through. Most cases, they were script submissions from outside writers, with the showrunners usually giving them a spit-shine (teleplay) to fit with the series. You'll usually only get follow-ups if the same writer returns with something, since the characters they create for the episode are technically their own creations and, depending on what sort of contract they signed with Paramount, might not be allowed to be used again without financial compensation.

Damn, I hated that episode. Stupid rhyme got stuck in my head ... and how lame were those "aliens?" Mullet-haired, tattooed forehead, sticks-as-items-of-great-value ... lamest. species. EVER!

Season one episodes I would've liked follow ups to are "Dax" and "Battle Lines"

I would've liked to have found out what happened to those 2 warring factions-The Innis and The nol-Innis. I also would've liked to have found out what happened to Kai Opaka and if she managed to bring peace between those 2 groups.

I would've liked to have found out if Ilon Tandro ever found out his own father was the traitor who sent the secret transmission to the rebels. And also what happened with him and his mother after he found out she was in bed with Curzon at the time the secret transmission was made.

Well if you thought DS9 was bad for these, I take it you haven't delved much into Voyager?

There's so many episodes in that show that just suddenly cut to the ship flying away and then credits....... without even the little "What did we learn from this" chat you'd normally get in TNG or DS9.

You should read "Rising Son" by S. D. Perry. You'll get the answers to these questions. It's part of the DS9 post-series novels, but this one is actually almost completely standalone from the others, so you can pick it up fairly easily.

I found the abrupt endings of the first season of TNG to be far more jarring than the abrupt endings of DS9.
