Done with Star Trek?

A lot of those brave statements about what Trek "should be" are no more useful or well-considered than "throw strikes and don't give 'em anything good to hit."

The kind of Star Trek I miss.

Yeah...and that sort of Star Trek wasn't even popular 40 years ago.

Congrats. Have fun with your Youtube clips. I'll be riding the wave of relevance.

Yeah, but you know what, whippersnapper - after 40 years that's still one of my favorite Trek scenes, too.

The episode that contains it? Not so much. Maybe we should get Paramount to boil a lot of TOS down to a "highlights reel" of great moments...after the first year, there are some great scenes but very few great stories. ;)

So it doesn't matter whether it's good or not, as long as it's popular?

That seems to be a popular opinion. I didn't really care for much of the new movie myself but I can't begrudge everyone enjoying Star Trek being hip and popular, it's refreshing I imagine. Wait until it goes south again for everyone to then claim they don't care what critics and mass audiences think.

It's both good and popular.

If someone else has a different opinion about the "good" part, fine - certainly I'd evaluate that, though, in the context of my impressions of their taste, character and intelligence.

And that is a key point. There is a tendency (and it can happen on either side of the argument) to dismiss or discredit an opposing viewpoint based primarily on impressions of taste, character and intelligence.

Haha, lol about the intelligence part.

Oh yeah. That would be we "out of touch" ones.

Well, to be fair - ask 5 Star Trek fans what Star Trek is at its Roots/Core; and most likely you'll get 5 different answers.

Agreed. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

And, to my mind, if you're worrying more about whether something is true to Gene's Sacred Vision than whether it's a good yarn, you're kind of missing the point. IMHO.
