"Haole," I believe.

I was told years ago that it's usually used regarding whites and mainlanders. It can also be used more derogatorily, akin to "mainland asshole."

Thanks for the clarification. I really do hope this is explored at least a little bit. Not at the expense of apparent arc they have going, but maybe work it into the mix somehow. It would give this new series an extra bit of punch I am sure it could use.

The original series kind of did the same thing. I was always fascinated by the look at the island culture in both H50 and its direct successor Magnum, PI.

I'm a big fan of the original and personally, I loved this new version. Yes, there is a lot of action. However, the original show actually had a lot of action at times. Check the two-hour pilot "Cocoon," for example.

My main concern going in was the relationship between McGarrett and Danny seemed much different in the previews. However, I see potential there. I think by the end of the episode they had started to settle down some. I just finished re-watching the first 3 seasons of the original on DVD and some of the early episodes had some antagonism between McGarrett and Danny as well, so I can give the update a pass for now. I'll definitely keep watching for now.

It's kind of nice not to have the show be just another procedural. Those can be good, but tend to get monotonous over time and there are so many. This show could follow the original and do a variety of episode types.

I never quit after just a pilot episode. After all, it's unfair to judge an entire series by one episode, especially a pilot. Pilots are often vastly different from the shows that follow. Besides, I'd imagine it would be difficult to keep up that level of action every single week. I did find it amusing that many of the visuals in the title sequence were directly copied from the originals, including the zoom in on the hotel.

Here's hoping that Marsters turns into the Wo Fat role for this series.

Korean actors were definitely out in force on last nights premiere.

I wonder if Daniel dae Kim's former co-star from "Lost" Yunjin Kim will make an appearance.

I don't even believe William Sadler is dead.

I though the show wasn't terrible but there is too much good TV out there for me to spend more time on this.
 
I wonder where Robert Scorpio is? I thought that he'd have something to say about the new show since he was a fan of the original.
 
Having read about the original show on Wiki, it doesn't seem that much different than the new one. On the original show, McGarrett is a former Naval officer appointed by the governor for his job. He battled criminals, Mafia, spies, etc.

Watched the pilot, and have to say that this show is made of awesome. Gunfights, fistfights, hitting people with semi trucks and police cars... if this show doesn't do well there will be something seriously wrong with the world.

Geeky squeeing aside, here's some more thoughts:
The character interaction throughout the pilot reminded me in a lot of ways of the character interaction in the early season(s) of 'Bones'. Danno and Steve's relationship is going to be fun to watch, and I also hope we get more of Chin and Kono in future episodes... especially Kono (getting to watch Grace Park kick butt is something I've seriously missed with BSG being off the air).

I don't recall ever watching the original H50, so I can't compare the two versions, but the pilot reminded me in a lot of ways of the aforementioned Bones, as well as Las Vegas, Crossing Jordan, and, to a certain extent, CSI Miami (which has a lot more action in it than its two sister series).

The humor in the pilot was great, and really set it apart from other procedurals, especially other CBS procedurals.

Tuesdays (I can't watch the show live) can't come fast enough.
 
I liked it. I can't stand cop shows usually, but this one is a lot of fun, which others like CSI and Law and Order don't have. It seems to have a great cast that has great chemistry, which is always a must. The Event was the show that I was really excited about this season, but I didn't get anything from the pilot character wise (which is what I look for). This seems to be all about the characters, but at the heart there is a mystery story, that doesn't seem like it's out of reach for it to be tied up. And it's also a mystery that won't end the show when it's tied up. That's my one problem with shows like The Event. It seems like it won't be able to go past a season.

And to answer the question from earlier. I decided to watch it mainly because of Daniel Dae Kim. Jin was in my list of favorite characters since "... In Translation," which was long before he ever spoke a word of English. If an actor can make his character compelling, essentially without speaking, that's extreme talent.
 
It was fun and I'll be back next week. I watched the original as a kid, but its been ages since I've seen an episode. From what I recall the only thing that set it apart from most of the other cop shows was the setting and the occasional foray into international espionage. The Wo Fat episodes are the ones that stand out for me.

I'm not sure why anyone would expect the new show to duplicate the style of television popular in the 60s and 70s. This take has a bit more action and humor and is more "character" driven, but its the same set up as the old series: Special task force set up by the Governor to handle cases and criminals that threaten Hawaii. Though it remains to be seen how that will pan out. In the old show that could be stopping a Chinese spy ring in one episode and foiling a murderous con man in the next. The Five-0 can pick the cases they want I guess ( unless the guv assigns it) Its not a radical departure in that respect. The original was never Dragnet and this one isn't Law and Order.

What does thise mean exactly? I've never watched Beverly Hills 90210, but IIRC it was a night time soap focused around a group of High Schoolers and their families. The term seems to crop up when the cast of a show or movie is composed of young attractive people. The cast of this show is in their mid thirties (and forties in the case of Kim) The cast of the original series ranged from thirty to fifty. So whats the deal?
 
Here's one thing I've liked about the cop shows I've enjoyed in the past, namely L&O and L&O: SVU. No ridiculous car chases and over-the-top gunplay. For the most part characters spoke like real people. Original Five-0 was somewhat stylized yet it had a measure of credibility.

NuFive-0 had zilch credibility.
 
I wonder if they'll have a story arc, not as a main story, but as an underlying problem that they need to solve throughout the season while still keeping the plot of the week, kind of like the war on DS9. They could have some of the cases they solve give them leads towards an overall arcing plot to culminate during the season finale. Then again, I'd enjoy it just as a plot of the week.

I just watched an episode at CBS.com. No one ever talked like that in real life. :p

Whats wrong with ridiculous car chases and over-the-top gunplay in action oriented copshow? As I said neither version of Hawaii Five-O is supposed to be a Law and Order by the book procedural type show.
