A TrekBBS Logo

I like CRA's wordmark - simple and to the point.

About the copyright stuff, where does it end? I mean, we obviously couldn't use images of the actors or the delta, but does it extend all the way to the shuttlecraft or communicators? How about a highly stylized shuttlecraft image like AstroSmurf was talking about? A similar example there would be the R2 Builders Club logo, which is very stylized but not copyright-infringing.

BTW, I was considering doing something similar to the logo used for Epsilon IX or the Pathfinder Project, but I thought that might be a bit too cliché.

P.S.: I've just done this because I've some time off and am bored. So please be gentle in ripping in apart.

^ Now that is awesome! Very "tongue in cheek" too.

Well copyright can cover a lot of things. But in this circumstance specific designs like ships, shuttlecraft and tech gizmos can be specifically protected. The control interfaces (like LCARS), specific set pieces (like the captain's chair) and costumes could also be copyrighted also. Reproducing them in any way in their entirety would be technically an infringement. Things like the bridges, the sets as a whole or something mundane like planetary bodies (unless they feature something specifically identifiable) can not be copyrighted. Copyrights have to be for something very specific and those tend to be to general. Or in other words, I can copyright the appliances but I can not copyright the entire kitchen.

One way of getting around copyrights is to reproduced parts of them, such as the main deflector dish or a button panel, since that would most likely fall under fair use. If you were to design something that had a certain Trek "flavor" that would also be okay. For example, I created a Trek inspired Holiday Card last year that had Santa's sleigh with TOS warp nacelles and a reindeer in a bubble helmet. It was inspired by Trek (and in some way the Jetsons) but did not infringe on anything since it was technically an original work. (I think that is how the R2 Builders Club can use their logo. I think it is borderline though.)

And B.J. I think your "mission logo" idea is a good one and not cliche at all. In fact, I have a logo in the works for my next batch that is inspired by the Starfleet Academy logo from the 24th Century. So I say... do it! :bolian: Anything goes.

Man, this should have been an art contest!

AstroSmurf, I really like your first logo. Starscape, yours is equally as cool! :techman:

I suppose I should have read through more than the original post before getting to work... :alienblush:
This is what I ended up with... :(

Maybe that could be modified to be a bit less overt. I'm thinking turn the gold part 90º clockwise and lose the dart at the bottom of the arrow, so it's all negative space and sort of frames the "TrekBBS" part. You might even realize it's the Star Trek arrowhead unless you're already looking for it.

Here's my 15-20 worth of brainstorming. I figure the colors could rotate around as the user browses the site (much like AstroSmurf's idea for the site's color theme.)
