A newly discovered solar system, the most similar to our own so far discovered and they give it a monicker like that.

I long for the olden days of naming heavenly bodies properly.

I dub them Pugh 1, Pugh 2, Barney McGrew, Dibble, and Grubb. Cuthbert had the morning off but he can be number 6 if it's confirmed, and Flack could be number 7.

Captain Flack who read out the role-call. I think we've just about run out of deities for naming planets and asteroids in our own solar system, but there are plenty of cartoon and animation characters.

There weren't millions of bodies to catalogue in "the olden days". :)

Yeah but "Tannhauser Gate" sounds so much cooler than DB32X7

I guess proper naming will occur once we discover FTL and settle our galaxy (and have kicked a few alien asses to establish our rep).

What's the bet that something, somewhere in the galaxy is going to be called the Tannhauser Gate? It WILL happen. Oh yes.

Heavenly bodies are now named after famous license plates.

So are you going to sit there and come up with hundreds of billions of individual names?

Besides, you only give a proper name to someplace you've BEEN.
Leave the naming for the future Captain Kirk's...

Well we haven't been to lots of objects in out own solar system, and if you discount automatic probes as well, that would mean that we could only have names for the earth and the moon. :p

Besides, thinking up names for things is fun.

Everything gets labeled "HD" nowadays, even the new laser printer we got at the office recently has an "HD" sticker on it :p
