THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till release

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

The idea of Mr. Freeze isn't what was wrong with B&R.

QFT.

That wasn't actually my quote.

As it happens, I think there were many, many things wrong with B&R. But a villain like Mr Freeze is more suited to an OTT, fantastical depiction of Batman (of which there have been many over the years, Shumacher isn't exclusively to blame) than in a gritty, dark and, yes, I'll say it, realistic version. The latter is the version of Batman I prefer.

When I think of Norse mythology or Shakespearean films or influences I think of Gladiator or Troy

 Yeah...

Dark? Have you seen the animated Batman take on Mr. Freeze from the 90s?

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

^ Yes. But realistic? It's in the realm of the fantastic. Which can be dark but I don't think it can work in the context of a gritty crime drama. Which is ultimately how I prefer Batman to be.

A man with a gun that can freeze things isn't that far off from a guy who survived having half his face burnt off yes surviving without infection or a guy whose only harm from an acid bath was bleached skin. Said deformed man also coming up with a toxin that bleaches a person's skin and gives them a rigor mortis grin.

Seriously, all the plots Joker pulled off in the movie are just as unlikely as a freeze weapon.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

It is an obvious thing that superhero films of any nature are going to include some kind of fantastical element that suspends belief of the audience...no matter the attempt to ground that film in realism. As I've stated, I can understand how this particular movie would turn some fans off or make them skeptical compared to a "Batman" or "Iron Man" film because a film like "Thor" features fantastical, unexplainable elements like "Gods" and "God Realms". I think the film will balance these as best it can...it will be fascinating to see if it succeeds in doing this as well as executing a good film and honestly as a Thor fan that's really all I care about, and from the small amount of footage that we've seen comparative to the actual film I think this film is going to be outstanding. I'm looking forward to both "Thor" and "Green Lantern" which one could argue has fantastical elements in it's self...

In which movie? The Burton one maybe. The ones he pulled off in TDK were way more likely than the Freeze gun. And the bleached skin thing was omitted from TDK by Nolan because of its implausibility.

Anyway, this is a Thor thread, so I don't want to hijack it any more.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Then again, I could be wrong. I haven't even seen the film yet so I'm willing to give it a chance. But I honestly get a weak Battlefield Earth vibe about this film than even Batman Begins or Iron Man or Gladiator. That's not very encouraging, but we'll see.
I can chalk everything else up to preference as you said but had to address this. Even claiming a remote similarity to Battlefield Earth, even based on those 5min of footage, is not a fair comparison. Your above hyperbole.

You're only saying that because you dislike my comparison to Battlefield Earth. Honestly, from the camera angles, to the acting, to the set design, to almost everything in that trailer honestly reminded me of the over-the-top ridiculousness of that movie.

I don't think it a valid comparison no. Your a smart guy, you know that film was horrid and any comprison to it would get a reaction, I just supplied it. :)

It would be like someone viewing sneaked Curse of the Black Pearl footage and saying, "It looks and reminds me of Cutthroat Island."

I get that of all the variations of Thor you wanted more grandiose(really we don't know yet but I digress). That you think the sets plain. We saw for the most part spliced together footage that largely goes by in a jarring fashion ergo I think the comparison is not only not fair its not accurate.

I'm eager to see the first official trailer for the film...

Well, I think it is a valid comparison.

It would be like someone viewing sneaked Curse of the Black Pearl footage and saying, "It looks and reminds me of Cutthroat Island."

I would find that a valid criticism. Look, as you well know, opinions are subjective. How people arrive to those opinions are purely individual and unique. You can cut and arrange footage to appear in any sort of way you want, and if someone saw an early rough cut Pirates of the Caribbean trailer and said it looked like Cuttroat Island then I would at the very least give credence to their opinion even if I disagreed with them.

(On a lesser note, there are parts of the Pirates films that are pretty bad)

I mentioned comparisons via the acting, which is very over-the-top, just how the acting was over-the-top in Battlefield Earth. The set design is gaudy and ugly similar to the ugly set design of the aforementioned movie. The camera angles, in particular, just flat-out reminded me of that movie. I'm sure Thor will be a better movie than that -- I'm guessing it'll be on the level of other such mediocre and sub-par comic-book movies like Ghost Rider or Fantastic Four -- but that was the initial impression I got from the trailer. Take it or leave it.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

I find this amusing...I suppose I found it surprising that you felt this way about the footage Jackson but I can understand someone feeling the way you do about it. No doubt that it has cheesy elements, no one should begrudge you for your opinion nor should they care if you like it or not...that last statement didn't come out well...hopefully you get my meaning.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Come now, you surely know I don't begrudge him his opinion. Just thought it was a harsher than necessary comparison.

Just internet blokes passing the time, shooting the breeze is all.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

^ I know you weren't...I was talking more or less in a general sense...and indeed, we've got until May 2011 to debate to death about this film and after it comes out so no doubt we'll have more entertaining discussions.

I don't know about you, but after I get done arguing with someone like you, I open up my leather journal (with my name emblazoned on it) and I write in it about how sorrowful and regretful I feel about having to endure such harsh treatment from the likes of you.

Today, I engaged in a vicious, hurtful argument. It was mean-spirited and it made me wish the person with whom I was sparring with my fingers was never born. The veracity in which I typed my response -- the quick, pounding succession of my fingers tapping loudly on my keyboard -- embedded into me a resurgence of pure, unadulterated hatred that I haven't felt since they canceled "Star Trek: Enterprise".

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

^ You felt hatred when they canceled "Star Trek: Enterprise"? LOL

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Uhm.... like, hello. Look at my name. I was a fan of Enterprise.

*That sound you hear is the sound of hundreds of posters suddenly losing their respect for me*

LOL!

Can I pull a Billy Madison and gain redemption?

UNO's on me whenever I get to Chicago next.
